Bears sprint past Volcanoes

July 31, 2010 by YH-R Sports

KEIZER, Ore. — An aggressive attitude has vaulted the Yakima Bears to the top of the second-half standings.

Yakima stole eight bases — including four in a game-changing five-run fifth inning — in running over the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes for the third straight game, winning Saturday’s contest 11-3.

The winning streak gives the Bears (3-1) a one-game lead over Spokane and Tri-City in the second half standings and also secures their first road series win of the season.

Westley Moss led Saturday’s baserunning rampage, stealing four of the eight bags to highlight a 2-for-5 night in which he scored twice and drove in two runs.

Moss set the tone for the evening in the third when he earned a two-out walk and then stole second and third before scoring on Michael Freeman’s single to right.

Moss was at it again in the fifth, collecting one of Yakima’s four thefts in the inning. Zach Walters had the big hit in the rally, smacking a two-run triple, one of two triples and four extra-base hits in the game for Yakima, which led 6-0 after that uprising.

Michael Freeman went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run, and Walters drove in three for the Bears, who have 13 stolen bases in the past two games.

Starter Miguel Pena was the beneficiary of the offense, going five strong innings to earn his first victory of the season.

Frontis stays on top

July 31, 2010 by YH-R Sports

TOPPENISH, Wash. — Typically, Saturday’s round in any golf tournament is referred to a “moving day” as players either try to move into contention, or take themselves out of it heading into the final 18 holes.

On moving day in this year’s Yakima Amateur Invitational, Dusty Frontis didn’t budge a bit — the two-time defending champion was still sitting atop the leader-board after another red-number round, this time at Mount Adams Country Club.

Frontis fired a 3-under 69 Saturday that left him with a two-shot lead heading into today’s final round at SunTides Golf Course.

Frontis now has a 7-under total of 137 this week, and he is 15-under par for his last three Yakima Am rounds going back to his record-tying 8-under closing round at the Yakima Elks last August.

There was a some shuffling right behind the leader, with Zach Wandersheid sliding ahead of Corey DeGrood into second place after shooting the day’s low round, a 4-under 68.

That puts Wanderscheid at 139, two back of Frontis and two ahead of DeGrood, who shot even par Saturday.

A couple of other contenders fell back after Saturday’s round.

Carey Weedman, who came in just a shot off the lead, struggled to a 76 Saturday and is now eight shots off the pace, while Jeff Larkin, who started Saturday’s play just three shots of the pace, had a 73 and is seven back.

In the other two flights, Ray Gallipo holds a one-shot lead over Gary Gredvig in First Flight gross, and Tony Whitley is also a one-stroke leader, over James Rogers in Second Flight gross.

Out in Frontis

Four-time champion seizes one-shot lead ||

YAKIMA, Wash. — If there was any added pressure with a bit of history within his reach, Dusty Frontis sure didn’t show it in Friday’s opening round of the Yakima Amateur Invitational.

Instead, the two-time defending champion made it clear to the strong field of challengers that it won’t be easy to unseat him.

Frontis opened this year’s defense with a masterful tour of Apple Tree Golf Course, firing a 4-under par 68 to grab a one-shot lead over playing partner Corey DeGrood and Carey  Weedman.

The crowded leaderboard features four more players within three shots of the lead. Gary Hutchins is fourth after a 70, and three players are tied at 71 — Zach Wanderscheid, Jeff Larkin and Aaron Adams, who was the third member of Frontis’ group.

Frontis is attempting to become the first player to win three straight times in what started as the Yakima City Tournament in 1944. A victory would also make Frontis just the third five-time champion.

Today’s second round is at Mount Adams Country Club, with the closing round Sunday at SunTides Golf Course.

Kelso fends off rally-minded Pak

July 31, 2010 by Scott Spruill

SELAH, Wash. — Two big deficits were not enough to put away the stubborn Yakima Valley Pepsi Pak Friday night.

But a third one was.

Unable to hold leads of 8-0 and 12-8, the upstart Pacific Tech crew from Kelso delivered the final blow in the ninth inning, scoring three runs for a 15-12 victory in the American Legion state tournament at Carlon Park.

In bringing an end to Yakima Valley’s 14-game win streak, Pacific Tech is the lone remaining unbeaten team in the tournament, which has whittled its field to four teams this weekend.

The Pak (39-15) will play the Spokane Bandits today in a loser-out game at 3 p.m., and Pacific Tech (29-13) will face the Twin City Titans at 7 p.m.

When Kelso put up seven runs in the top of the fourth inning, opening an 8-0 lead while the Pak had yet to get a base hit, an odd hush fell over the homefield faithful.

But Yakima Valley responded quickly, getting four runs back in the bottom of the fourth thanks largely to Matt Snider’s two-out, three-run double.

The Pak kept rolling in the fifth and drew even as Ethan Flory crushed a grand slam off the first pitch he saw from Jake Look, who had just replaced starter Braydon Poole.

In a game with 31 hits and 17 walks, the crooked numbers kept on coming.

The two teams traded four-run outbursts in the sixth with J.R. Weigel’s two-out RBI single pulling the Pak back into a 12-12 tie.

“We made a couple big mistakes early and had to fight back,” said assistant coach Rob Archer. “Our focus now is just to battle and get through tomorrow.”

Kurt Lindemann was 4-for-5 with three runs, Snider finished 3-for-4 with four RBI and Flory drove in five runs for the Pak.

“It’s a credit to the kids the way they fought back,” Archer added. “We were down 8-0, didn’t have a hit until the fourth and it looked like it might be a 10-run game. But we scraped back and played hard — that’s been their approach all season. That’s how we have to play tomorrow.”

Yakima Valley closer Jacob Vetsch, making his third state appearance in as many days, stopped the bleeding in the sixth by getting the final two outs and then blanked Kelso in the seventh and eighth.

But Pacific Tech opened the ninth with three straight singles, the go-ahead tally plated by Carl Johnson on Lane Sari’s third base hit. Mike Murray scored the second run, capping a big evening — 5-for-6 with two doubles, two RBI and three runs.

Surprising Pacific Tech, which lost to Twin City in its regional and came back for the second berth, has scored 37 runs during its 3-0 run at state.
