August 27, 2010 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — Jim Pomeroy, a highly decorated motocross racer from Yakima who was killed in a car accident in 2006, will be posthumously inducted into the Washington State Motorcycle Hall of Fame in October.

Pomeroy, who will be part of the Hall’s first induction class along with Steve Baker, was the first American to win a World Motocross Grand Prix race in Spain in 1973.

Pomeroy was a national standout in the 1960s and ‘70s who established many international firsts as a U.S. rider.

The Hall of Fame ceremony will be held Oct. 24 at 5:30 p.m. at the Renton Motorcycle Company in Renton.

I was honored to be a motocross racer during Jim’s career, and raced against him many times at places like Puyallup, Monroe, Zillah and others. Stevie Baker was a very accomplished road racer, but raced motocross occasionally, and I beat him in a race in Bellingham. The only times I beat Jimmy were when he crashed or when he broke, and he was so hard on equipment he broke lots of things. He had a great personality and smile and I’m very sorry he’s gone

I knew Jim personally from meetings at motocross races from around 1965 and up, I raced with him at sunnyside raceway in the 60′s and they had a stoplight for a starting systym, we raced at yakima speedway on the infield of the car track, we raced in monroe wa. on a sprint car track against the sprint cars, we rode bikes in the crater at orting wa. we raced at motocross tracks all around the northwest through the 70′s with his brother Ron, who in later years when Jim raced professionally became his mechanic, and travled all over Europe and the U.S. on his Bultaco, I always knew him as a great competiter and a good person and I liked him a lot, and I will miss him.
