First-round state hoop sites announced

September 30, 2010 by

Tons of local news out of the WIAA’s Executive Board meeting, which convened on Sunday and Monday.
Four area high schools were selected to host first round state basketball games next year on Feb. 25-26 — Sunnyside (boys) and Grandview (girls) in Class 2A and Eisenhower (boys) and West Valley (girls) in Class 1A.
Two teams from these brackets will advance to the 2A and 1A finals at the SunDome. For information on all sites and classes — plus the state allocations for fall sports — see the WIAA website.
Also, Yakima County Stadium (2A, 1A baseball), Parker Field (2B, 1B baseball), Gateway Complex (2B, 1B fastpitch) and Selah’s Carlon Park (2A fastpitch) were all approved as state tournament sites for 2011 and 2012.

Riddle on the right track

Naches’ Riddle hopes to break unlucky streak in Speedway’s big events ||

YAKIMA, Wash. — For Owen Riddle, the timing couldn’t be better.

And as much as anything, that could be the deciding factor in this weekend’s 23rd annual Fall Classic at Yakima Speedway.

When Sunday’s 200-lap Super Late Model main event hits the gas, Riddle will be undeniably the hottest driver on the track having just finished a dominant season in the Speedway’s Late Model Challenge Series.

The 24-year-old Naches driver flew under his sixth checkered flag of the summer last Saturday in the Series’ 100-lap finale, so the time is ideal for Riddle to take on the best in the Northwest with a $7,500 winner’s check at stake.

“We couldn’t be more excited about this weekend,” he said. “We feel like we’re at the top of our game, and with all the great drivers coming in this is the chance to see where we stack up.”

Riddle and his No. 10 blue racer have recently owned the half-mile oval over seasonal circuits, winning three of the last four Late Model point titles. But he has yet to win one of the Speedway’s premier bookends — either the Apple Cup or Fall Classic. While the Fall Classic has been something of a nemesis for the team, Riddle did finish third in the Apple Cup to start this season.

“With the way the season has gone, and with the car as good as it was last week, this is probably our best chance to date to win the Fall Classic,” Riddle said. “But, like everybody knows, so much has to go right. At least we feel we’re in the best position we’ve ever been in.”

One of the things Riddle means by “so much as to go right” is finding a way to beat so many top-tier drivers. That means, among many others, the last three Fall Classic champions — Portland’s Joey Tanner (2009) and locals Mike Longton (’08) and Erick Hargraves (’07) — and the Jefferson brothers, Jeff and Jason.

What gives Riddle added hope and confidence over other years isn’t just his track championship and victory last week but the nature of his season title. The circuit was expanded from seven races to 11, involved higher car counts with the early-season demise of the ASA Northwest Tour and was bolstered by a significant sponsorship fund that netted him $8,000.

“The biggest thing for us was racing at a high level every week and we did that,” said Riddle, who recorded nine top-five finishes. “With 11 races, more competition and the money they put together, there was that much more pressure.

“Looking back now, I was really happy with how we were pretty much right coming off the trailer,” he added. “We didn’t fight through many changes or adjustments and that’s all about the crew and everybody doing their part.”

Riddle looks forward to a 200-lap race, even though last year’s protracted Fall Classic finale took nearly four hours and was partially responsible for his 14th-place finish. He was in the top five with 25 laps remaining when a broken track bar spoiled the effort.

“In our 100-lap races we’ve been very strong at the end, managing the tires and finding a good groove 60, 70 laps in,” he said. “The track goes through a lot of changes through the season. There’s more grip in the Apple Cup, but as the season goes along and more rubber gets put down, things loosen up and it gets slicker. In the Fall Classic, there’s a lot of factors to manage.”

Patience being paramount.

“I think we’re ready for a good run,” Riddle said. “We’ve been solid, and our setups have been right on. Heading into one of these, this is the best situation we’ve ever been in.”

On the flip side

Contrasting Riddle’s momentum is Tanner’s up-and-down year.

Mike Longton, left, placed third while Joey Tanner finished first in the 2009 Fall Classic race Oct. 4, 2010 at the Yakima Speedway. (Gordon King/Yakima Herald-Republic file)

The Fall Classic’s defending champion hoped to battle Riddle for the Challenge Series title and did win one race in May. But a series of setbacks dropped him out of contention and he opted in the second half of the season to focus on Late Model dirt-track racing.

But Tanner is now back on the hardtop and fully intent on a repeat run this weekend.

“Nothing else matters to me at this point after the way our season has gone on the asphalt,” he said. “I’m more determined then ever to win another Fall Classic.”

Tanner has enlisted the help of Ellensburg’s Travis Bennett and Short Track Enterprises to assist in his return.

“Travis and his guys have put their touches on the car so it won’t be the same No. 36 that has run at Yakima from the beginning of the year,” he noted. “Considering their background with all the success they’ve had I know we’ll have a very good car for the weekend.”

Tanner is all too aware that a Fall Classic victory is difficult to duplicate. The only back-to-back winner since the event’s inception in 1988 was Pete Harding (1998-99).

“It’s going to be tough to win this race,” he said. “I’m going to need to be even better this year.”

Mavs host clinic, golf tourney

This may be their offseason, but the Yakima Mavericks will be plenty busy the next two weekends.

First up, the team will be conducting a 7-on-7 skills clinic this Saturday starting at 10 a.m. at the practice field across from Union Gap School. There is no cost and the clinic is open to anyone who has played previously for the Mavericks or who is interested in trying out next spring.

Then on Sunday, Oct. 10, the Mavericks Golf Tournament will be at SunTides Golf Course. The event, featuring four-player teams in a scramble format, is a fundraiser for the team.

Cost is $300 per team and there will be prizes, including a trip to Hawaii.

The registration form and more information is available at the team’s website, www.yakimamavericks.com.

NOTE: In a personnel move, the Mavericks announced that former quarterback James Phillips has agreed to become the team’s offensive coordinator next season.

He correctly answered 1999 for the last year that the Big Nine Conference actually had nine members. During the 1998-99 school year, the number of school matched the league’s name.

He wins a $10 gift card to the Second Street Grill.

This week’s question is: What Yakima Valley school is the last to produce a boys or girls cross country state championship team?
