Holding ‘em under 50

September 29, 2010 by

A Sunday story in which Bud Withers of The Seattle Times reported that Washington State has given up 50 or more points nine times in 30 games under Paul Wulff made me wonder.

Having covered Washington football while working in both Olympia and Bremerton, I remembered only one game in Don James’ 18-year, 212-game tenure with the Huskies in which his opponent reached a half hundred.

And sure enough, the only game in which a James-coached UW squad surrendered 50 or more came in the fifth week of his first season, 1975. The Huskies visited Bear Bryant and Alabama and lost, 52-0.

Later, during spring booster club meetings, James was able to joke about the game.

“We held Bear to just under the speed limit,” he once said. “We had him worried, though. At halftime, Bear thought he’d killed us.”

Later, trying to appear more serious, James said, “A lot of people didn’t realize it then, but we had a serious drug problem on our team that week. Alabama drug our butts all the way up and down the field.”

For the record, the Huskies yielded 50 or more points three times during six years and 70 games under James’ successor, Jim Lambright (54-20 to Notre Dame in 1996, 52-28 to UCLA in 1997 and 55-7 to Nebraska in 1998).

Davis’ Trimble out for rest of season

September 28, 2010 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — As Davis’ football team enjoys one of its best starts in program history, the Pirates learned this week they will have to  continue on without playmaker David Trimble.

The standout wide receiver and defensive back will undergo surgery on Thursday to repair a hernia injury suffered in a Sept. 10 game at Sunnyside.

He will be out six to eight weeks with the hopeful prospect of not missing any of the basketball season.

“I thought I could play with it, but I took a couple hits in the Richland game (last Friday) and I could tell it wasn’t working,” Trimble told me on Tuesday. “I didn’t want to sit out any of this season, but I have to take care of my health.”

I’ll have more on this in Friday’s prep report.

Cadets in a hurry against Davis — Ike scores quickly in victory

September 28, 2010 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — Tyler Suhm implored his Eisenhower girls soccer team to be ready to seize an early opportunity on Tuesday.

The Cadets listened and then did it.

Scoring a goal in the opening minute and two in the first 18 minutes, Eisenhower rushed to a 2-0 victory over Davis in a CBBN 4A match at Davis Field.

Junior Lisa Montoya took a feed from Breanna Mares and scored in the first minute to stake Ike to the quick lead.

“Right before the game we talked about getting a good start and executing early, Suhm said. “You can’t do much better than the first minute of the match. We wanted to get a chance to put some pressure on at the start and it worked out great.”

The Cadets added a second goal when Mares, a senior, scored on an assist from senior Liz Figueroa in the 18th minute.

From there, Ike’s defense took over and senior goalkeeper Sophia Pedemonte recorded five saves to preserve the shutout.

“Our defense has been playing really well lately,” Suhm added. “We were pretty solid today and Sophia did her part.”

The Cadets pushed over .500 in conference play, improving to 3-2 in the CBBN and 4-5 overall. Ike plays at Walla Walla on Saturday.

Davis (0-5, 3-6) is also on the road Saturday with a trip to Moses Lake. Goalkeeper Teresa Salazar, a sophomore, made five saves for the Pirates.
