Volleyball: WV wins CBBN 3A district title
October 31, 2010 by Scott Spruill
YAKIMA, Wash. — In making its undefeated run through 14 conference matches, West Valley’s volleyball team couldn’t have managed such a thing without having plenty of weapons.
But on Saturday afternoon with the postseason upon them, the Rams offered a timely reminder of just how varied and effective those weapons are.
With outside hitters Rachel Hanses and Morgan McDowell contributing their usual reliable attack, middle hitter Sarah Joffs stepped up with her best day of the season — 24 kills and nine blocks in two matches — as West Valley cruised to the Columbia Basin Big Nine 3A district title in its home gym.

“Sarah was huge today, definitely our player of the tournament,” praised coach Katie Hinckley. “The kind of balance she gave us today, giving the outsides a little break, was great to see.”
The fifth-ranked Rams started with a hiccup, dropping their first game to Kennewick in the semifinals but then catching fire for a 22-25, 25-16, 25-7, 25-20 victory. After waiting for Southridge to outlast Kamiakin in five games in the other semifinal, West Valley then swept the Suns 28-26, 25-21, 25-18 for the title.
“The main thing for us today was just coming out and playing like we can, playing with confidence,” said Joffs, a 6-foot-1 junior. “Once we got clicking I was proud of the way we kept our confidence up and kept playing well.”
In both of their conference meetings, Southridge took a game off West Valley but never managed to push the Rams to five. The Suns had a chance in the opening game, fending off four game points before Hanses put it away with one of her 16 kills.
“Our league is so tough, and Southridge is a very good team,” Hinckley warned her girls. “We went unbeaten in league, OK, that’s good, but now it’s district and there’s more to play for. That’s why we kept stressing the confidence — that’s got us through the last two months.”
Hanses, the team’s senior leader, recorded 33 kills for the day, and added 17 digs against Southridge. Behind Joffs’ 24 kills in the two matches, McDowell checked in with 18.
Defensively, libero Debora Aguilar had 22 digs and four others — Linnea Phillips, Ally Moore, setter Julia Nathe and Hanses — all produced between 15 and 17 digs.
“It was good to see us continue with the things we’ve done well all season, like battling for every ball,” Hinckley said. “We rally well and work hard — that wears teams out.”
The Rams, now 25-1 for the season, will take the CBBN’s top seed into the six-team regional tournament next Saturday in Spokane. West Valley has a bye in the first round and will play a 3 p.m. semifinal at Rogers High School.
In the other semifinal bracket will be top-ranked Mt. Spokane, setting up a possible 6 p.m. championship showdown with the Rams. The top three teams will advance to state.

Despite transition, CWU still in the hunt
October 31, 2010 by Roger Underwood
YAKIMA, Wash. — Don James’ disclosure that he wrote a projected record for each of his Washington football teams on a piece of paper and then stashed it in his desk for the duration of the season did not inspire similar routines from coaches around the state.
Not right away, at least. James was 11-11 after his first two seasons in Seattle.
“When I was a GA (graduate assistant) at Washington State, I did that,” Central Washington coach Blaine Bennett said. “A lot of people did. It makes some sense, because over the course of a season you get caught up in the emotion. You lose a couple and people think you’re not as good as you really are, or you win a couple and people think you’re better.”
Bennett’s Wildcats, completing a bye week, are 6-3. They have two games left.
So has the coach taken time to assess?
“Actually, I have,” Bennett said. “And to be honest, we’re probably right about where I thought we’d be. I’d hate to say that in front of a lot of our fans or something, because nobody’s happy with 6-3.
“But if you’d told me before the season that with two games left we’d have a chance to win the conference and make the playoffs, I’d have taken it.”
Back in August, prior to CWU’s season opener against Minnesota Duluth, little was certain about Bennett’s third Wildcats season.
Two of Central’s first three opponents were believed to be beasts, and Duluth and Eastern Washington have been exactly that. The unbeaten Bulldogs are ranked No. 1 by D2Football.com and Beau Baldwin’s Eagles are No. 8 among FCS schools.
That the Wildcats took Eastern to the wire before losing 35-32 in Seattle has gotten little traction with pollsters, though.
“My first year here,” Bennett said, “we were 10-1 and our only loss was by one point at Montana, to a team that played for the I-AA (now FCS) national championship. We ended up sixth in our region. So they don’t pay much attention to games outside our division.”
Not to mention games inside their conference, unless Central loses one. When the Wildcats did just that, 25-24 at Humboldt State on Oct. 2, they disappeared from both the D2Football.com rankings and the coach’s poll and haven’t been heard from since.
The rankings that matter, NCAA Division II’s four regional polls, will be released Monday. Two weeks later the final regional rankings will determine the 24-team D-II playoff field.
If CWU wins its final two games — at home against Simon Fraser and Western Oregon — it will have a shot at making the top six in its region and receiving its fourth straight postseason bid.
Its chances are slim, however, because of the Humboldt loss. And we all should have seen this coming.
Any program will take a recruiting hit when it loses two coaches in two years, as Central did in 2007 and 2008. The effects were limited by the steadying hand of John Picha, who’s in his 22nd year as a Wildcat assistant.
Still, the talent so successfully assembled by John Zamberlin began to dissipate. Last year the Wildcats rode a stellar group of 23 seniors, most of them Zamberlin recruits, to a 12-0 record and D-II quarterfinal berth. Several transfers also contributed handsomely.
This year, Bennett had hoped for further transfer help, and has gotten some from linebackers Paul Wright (Illinois State) and Jared Silva-Purcell (Nevada). But his lofty aspirations for quarterback Alex Cate, a senior from Oklahoma State, didn’t pan out.
“I had a lot of hope vested in him,” Bennett said of Cate, who lost his starting job to Ryan Robertson before getting hurt and leaving school. “We also had a running back from Colorado who didn’t pan out.”
Not to mention an offensive line so depleted by injuries that redshirt freshmen Donnie Johnson and Neil Fuhrmann were thrust into action.
Still, despite three losses, Central has a chance.
Because of what Baldwin and Bennett have done with talent primarily stockpiled by Zamberlin, the Wildcats’ reputation might override their record, and CWU could again reach the postseason in a season of transition.
Bennett said even before his team’s 26-18 defeat of Humboldt on Oct. 23 that he believed Central was better than the Lumberjacks, and is counting on a similar opinion from Western Oregon’s Arne Ferguson.
The Wolves head coach represents the GNAC on the Super Regional 4 ranking committee.
So has Bennett discussed the poll with Ferguson?
“No,” he said, “but I will. Arne’s a good friend of mine.”

Cross Country: Ike sweeps regional titles
October 31, 2010 by YH-R Sports
WENATCHEE, Wash. — Domination and depth.
Eisenhower’s girls and boys cross country teams used different means to reach the same result on Saturday — a Class 4A Eastern Washington regional championship.
While the girls won their team title by 24 points and were unchallenged, the boys needed a sixth-runner tiebreaker to edge Lewis & Clark in a showdown of the state’s top ranked teams.
Mayra Chavez and Berenice Penaloza finished third and fifth, respectively, for Ike’s girls, who scored 68 points for the program’s seventh regional title. Chavez’s time of 17 minutes, 57 seconds, on the 3-mile course at Walla Walla Point Park was just six seconds off the winning pace.
Davis’ Kaitlin Kaluzny (8th) and Sydney Allen (10th) earned individual state berths by placing in the top 15. The Pirates’ girls squad was fifth, just missing out on a top-three berth to state in Pasco next Saturday.
Ike’s top-ranked boys tied Lewis & Clark with 57 points, and Kyle Chapman’s 32nd-place finish bested LC’s No. 6 runner by nine seconds to give the Cadets their first regional boys title since 2004.
German Silva was Ike’s top finisher in fourth in 15:05.
• The 3A regional meet was also held in Wenatchee. West Valley’s Chase Mears and Chantel Jaeger had the top local finishes in 19th place.
Like the 4A meet, the top three teams and 15 individuals qualified for state.

Bulldogs send two to state
GEORGE, Wash. — With a mile to go, Ellensburg’s Jeffrey Ott had broken away from league rival Adrian Diaz of Quincy and appeared on his way to a regional championship. Then, seemingly from nowhere, came Deer Park’s Dayde Collins.
“I heard somebody come up on me and — whoosh! — there he went,” said Ott of Collins’ move with a half-mile to go. Collins pulled away to take the victory in 16 minutes, 9 seconds over 5,000 meters Saturday at the grounds of The Gorge Amphitheatre. Ott claimed second in a personal best of 16:20.
The meet combined the 10-team Central Washington Athletic Conference and the seven-team Great Northern league, consisting mostly of Spokane-area schools.
Ott’s effort helped Ellensburg’s boys place a state-qualifying third, and the Bulldogs’ girls finished fourth to also earn a trip to Pasco next Saturday. Selah’s boys punched their state ticket, placing fourth.
On the girls side, Wapato’s Sammi Jo Blodgett’s fourth place proved the top finish for the CWAC, and Ellensburg’s Annalise Pownall came up big with a fifth-place finish.
Blodgett (19:39) and Pownall (19:47) were also the top finishers from any school not named Cheney as the Blackhawks went 1-2-3 to run away with the team title.

Record runaway for Davis
October 30, 2010 by Scott Spruill
Pirates top several school marks, get sixth win for first time since ’76 ||
YAKIMA, Wash. — For Davis’ football team, this was a night that was meant to be.
Even when it was literally scratched off the calendar last weekend, Senior Night for the Pirates was given second life because, well, it was simply meant to be.
“We had to have this — our Senior Night with a chance to finish at home the right way,” said senior lineman Sebastian Hunt. “We’ve come a long way and we deserved this.”
After Hermiston, Ore., backed out of Friday’s non-league contest at Zaepfel Stadium, the Pirates spent three days thinking they had been robbed of their Senior Night. But Chief Sealth stepped in and Davis made it a night to remember.

With 500 yards of offense and 10 touchdowns, the Pirates broke a school scoring record with a 71-21 victory over the Seahawks that gives them ample momentum heading into next Thursday’s finale in Spokane against Mead.
“It’s hard to put into words how much this means,” said senior Nick Rodriguez, who scored a touchdown on offense and defense. “This just feels great. To think we almost didn’t get this game. I mean, we were promised 10 games and we want all of them.”
Records rained down for the Pirates, who moved to 6-3 and secured their first six-win season in 34 years.
Not only was the 71-point total a best in school history, breaking the previous high of 54, but Friday’s tally pushed Davis’ season total to 309 — also a school record.
Individually, it was more of the same.
Quarterback Deion Wright completed 8 of 11 passes for 197 yards and two touchdowns, tying the school record of 16 scoring passes in a single season.
Running back Austin Wagner broke free for 117 yards on just five carries in the first half and finished with 149 yards and three touchdowns, moving him within one score of tying Les Rucker’s 50-year-old record of 17 touchdowns in a season.
But Wright and Wagner are both juniors.
Back to the seniors.
Andrew Perez, Nick Rodriguez and Roberto Rodriguez — all among the 13 seniors honored at halftime — scored the Pirates’ first three touchdowns. Leading just 14-6 after the first quarter, Davis erupted for 36 points in the second period.
It was an unfortunate mismatch for the Seahawks (1-8), but one that afforded Davis the chance to put distance on last week’s disappointment. Wenatchee knocked Davis out of the running for a shot at the state playoffs, and on the trip home the team learned that Hermiston would not be coming to Yakima this week.
“We didn’t play the way we should have at Wenatchee, and we really wanted some payback this week against anybody,” Nick Rodriguez said. “For our last home game, it was awesome.”
Davis, which finished fourth in CBBN 4A play, will travel to Spokane on Thursday to face Mead, the GSL’s No. 4 seed, in a 6 p.m. game at Joe Albi Stadium. Mead (4-5) lost 28-21 in overtime to University on Thursday.
“All weekend and Monday we didn’t think we had a game tonight,” Hunt said. “What a relief to get one and play this way. Now we’re getting ready for Mead — that’s our playoff game.
