Girls soccer: Richardson leads WV

YAKIMA, Wash. — Senior Ashley Richardson scored two goals and assisted on a third as West Valley’s girls soccer team opened the postseason with a 6-0 victory over Pasco in 3A regional play Thursday at Cottonwood Field.

The Rams (13-4) will take a six-game win streak into Saturday’s 1 p.m. home match against University, Spokane’s No. 2 seed.

Sophomore Sandy Hanses got West Valley started in the fifth minute off an assist from Brittnee Rider.

“It was nice to get an early goal. It really set the tone,” said WV coach John Schubert, whose team edged Pasco 2-1 on Tuesday in conference play. “We had a very good practice yesterday and the kids were ready. Our older kids, right before the match, said let’s show the freshmen how we play in the postseason.”

Richardson scored a goal in each half to push her season total to 18 goals. Junior Jaden Gjestrum contributed a goal and two assists.

Kamiakin defeated Eastmont 5-2 in Thursday’s other first-round match and will play at Hanford on Saturday.

Ellensburg (13-4) advances to a district semifinal match at 1 p.m. Saturday at top-seeded Prosser (12-4).

Volleyball: La Salle wraps up SCAC West

YAKIMA, Wash. — With Jenessa McElrath’s 10 kills leading the way, La Salle captured the SCAC West volleyball title with a 25-17, 25-20, 25-12 sweep over Goldendale on Thursday.

The Lightning, which finished 11-1 and a game ahead of Naches Valley, will host Burbank, the East’s No. 4 seed, in a first-round district match on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Goldendale will be the West’s No. 4 district entry and will travel to East champ Connell on Tuesday.

NACHES HEIGHTS, Wash. — Highland teammates Olivia Newman and Claire McIntyre swept the top two spots in Thursday’s SCAC district girls cross country race at Apple Ridge Run.

Newman, a junior, covered her 3-mile home course in 19 minutes, 46 seconds, while McIntyre, a freshman, timed 19:59.

Zillah, Cle Elum and Highland, in order, claimed the three berths in next week’s state meet in Pasco. The Leopards, who earned the program’s seventh consecutive trip to state, edged defending champion Cle Elum by three points for the title.

Led by Matt Argo, Zillah’s boys put three runners in the top seven and finished a state-qualifying second behind Royal.

RC boys advance to state

WENATCHEE, Wash. — Dusty Bender’s second-place finish helped Riverside Christian’s boys to a state-qualifying effort at Thursday’s Class 2B-1B District 5-6 meet at Walla Walla Point Park.

The Crusaders had two other runners in the top eight for a runner-up finish behind Liberty Bell. The top two teams and 10 individuals in boys with the top team and first five girls qualified for state.

RC’s April Soelberg was the top local girl in fourth, and Bickleton qualified a total of three for state.

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Jill Webb scored with nine minutes left in regulation to give Saint Martin’s a 1-0 victory over Central Washington in a GNAC women’s soccer match Thursday at the CWU Soccer Field.

The match, Central’s final at home this season, dropped the Wildcats to 4-7-1 in the GNAC and 4-10-2 overall. Central plays at Western Oregon on Saturday.

PASCO, Wash. — An early lead couldn’t hold up Wednesday afternoon for Yakima Valley, which fell 2-1 to Columbia Basin in NWAACC East Region play.

Adrianna Jones put the Yaks up 1-0 in the sixth minute but CBC rallied with goals in the 38th and 47th minutes.

YVCC moved to 5-5-2 in the East and will host Walla Walla on Saturday.

WAPATO, Wash. — Joe Blodgett, who finished last season as interim coach for Wapato’s girls basketball team, has been named head coach for the Wolves, the school announced this week.

YAKIMA, Wash. — Cindy MacNider recorded a hole-in-one on Apple Tree Golf Course’s signature 17th hole during her round Sunday. MacNider used a wedge on the 102-yard shot for her third career ace.
