Rec Notes: Brennecke at karate championships

October 27, 2010 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — Erik Brennecke, a 19-year-old from Yakima, is representing the United States this week in South Africa at the world championships of Goju Ryu, a traditional style of karate that began in Okinawa.

Brennecke, a second-degree black belt, earned his spot on the three-member U.S. team in June, when he placed third in the U.S. national quality tournament in Spokane.

Goju Ryu, which means “hard-soft style,” doesn’t delineate between weight classes, so Brennecke — at 6-foot-2 and 165 pounds — might compete against someone much larger or much smaller than himself.

Brennecke is an assistant instructor at Yakima Pro-Action Family Martial Arts. The center is owned by his father Ernie Brennecke, the first foreign-born student to train under Goju Ryu master Morio Higaonna. Ernie is also a past U.S. team representative, having competed in the 1971 world championships, but he’s quick to say he was “never as good” as his son is now.

This week’s championships end Saturday.

Rocha wins another title

Selah’s Jose Rocha won his two bouts  at the 36th annual National Police Athletic League Boxing Championships earlier this month in San Antonio.

Rocha, who fights out of Yakima’s Evans Boxing Club, defeated Christopher Johnson in the 176-pound division in first match, and followed that by topping Alejandro Bermudez at 175 the next day.

The 16-year-old Selah High junior repeated as a Junior Golden Gloves National champion this summer.

Final test — EV tops Highland in tuneup for postseason

October 27, 2010 by

COWICHE, Wash. — On the final day of the regular season in girls soccer, East Valley and Highland had the day off.
From league play, that is.

East Valley High School's Tracy Martin, left, and Highland High School's Alyssa Wickenhagen head the ball in the second half of their Oct. 26, 2010 match. (GORDON KING/Yakima Herald-Republic)

The two high-powered teams got together for a non-league, postseason tune-up Tuesday evening and the Red Devils pulled out a 2-1 victory on Highland’s home field.
Coming off its only loss of the season at Prosser last Saturday, East Valley tweaked some things from that setback to earn a different outcome.
“The timing was good because we knew Highland would be tough and it would be a good test before district,” said EV coach Tim Ostrander. “We played much better than Saturday and not just because we won. It showed in the way we played — we possessed the ball, played with more patience and passed well.”
The Red Devils (14-1-1) own a share the CWAC title with Prosser and will take the No. 2 seed, based on a number draw, into the district tournament. EV will host a semifinal match on Saturday.
Tassia Merkle and Yasi Mohsenian scored goals in the first half for East Valley.
Caitlin Long scored her 22nd goal of the season in the 59th minute to pull the Scotties within a goal.
“It was a good challenge for us,” said Highland coach Felix Hernandez. “This was a perfect way to get ready for the playoffs.”
Highland (10-5-1) finished in a three-way tie for second place in the SCAC. How that gets resolved for district seeding — the No. 2 team gets a first-round bye — will be decided at a district meeting today.
Hernandez thought, based on a number draw, his Scotties would be seeded third and would host Royal on Saturday.

First half: 1, EV, Tassia Merkle (Grecia Carrillo), 13:00; 2, EV, Yasi Mohsenian (Salome Yates), 36:00.
Second half: 3, Highland, Caitlin Long (Alyssa Wickenhagen), 59:00.
Saves: Melissa Cervantes (H) 10, Karlee Ward (EV) 3, Brianna Hallenbeck (EV) 5.

Northwest League honors Wombacher

October 27, 2010 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — Having enjoyed a highly successful season on the field, the Yakima Bears efforts off it are also getting noticed.

Lauren Wombacher was named the Northwest League’s Woman Executive of the Year on Tuesday — the first time in the Bears’ 21 seasons that a member of the organization has earned that distinction.

“This is a great honor to win this award on behalf of the franchise,” Wombacher said in a news release from the team. “I take a lot of pride in the Yakima Bears, so my job in managing our brand is a passion for me.

“It’s a great feeling when our efforts are noticed by the rest of the league.”

Wombacher, wife of team general manager K.L. Wombacher, had multiple responsibilities during the 2010 season, including director of merchandise, creative services, brand management, and website management.

If handling those many duties didn’t put enough demands on her time, Wombacher also spent most of the season pregnant, eventually delivering the couple’s first child, daughter Madison Nicole, on Aug. 25.

Wombacher began her career with the Bears in 2003 as a game-day employee, and later served two years as office manager.

The award, announced at last week’s league fall meetings, is given to one woman in the league, recognizing her contributions to that team’s city, the Northwest League and professional baseball.
Wombacher will now be considered for the Rawlings Woman Executive of the Year, which will be announced at the Major League Baseball winter meetings in December in Orlando, Fla.
