Candanoza leads SunDome HOF class

November 28, 2010 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — It may not sound like it makes sense biologically, but following in big footsteps made Phillip Candanoza’s shoulders that much wider.

His never-back-down competitive fire was stoked in ferocious pick-up battles against older cousins Rolando and Roy Garcia, whose heroics during Grandview’s 1989-1990 state-title run had helped shape the town’s communal love of basketball.

Giving up years and inches in those court wars in the family driveway or the town’s “water tower park” honed the fearless warrior in Phillip Candanoza. That he was only 5-foot-6 as a Grandview senior in 2001-02 didn’t matter: He put the Greyhounds on his shoulders and carried them to an undefeated season and the Class 2A title.

Like Candanoza, Jeni Boesel grew up in a community and a family steeped in basketball success. But it wasn’t until she was in sixth grade that she really began to understand what her father, Roger Boesel, had accomplished as a player at Brewster High — and three years later, she set off on a high-school championship journey no less remarkable than her dad’s.

On Saturday evening, in a between-games presentation on the second night of the Tipoff Classic — a couple of hours after Grandview’s boys will face cross-state powerhouse Mark Morris in a very intriguing season-opener — Candanoza and Boesel will be inducted into the SunDome Basketball Hall of Fame.

The toughness came early.

“Wars.” That was the word Roy Garcia used to describe those family basketball games in which Candanoza, then a young teen, would take on cousins Roy and Rolando, both of whom had gone on to play college ball after their Grandview days.

“He did hold his own,” Roy Garcia recalled of those games, punctuated by friendly trash-talking over who was the best guard. What Candanoza did in addition to competing, though, was just as important: He listened. He learned.

“My brother and I went to college,” Garcia said, “and we were able to pass on the things that we learned — you guard somebody like this in this way or that way, looking at particular techniques when somebody’s defending you, little things you pick up along the way.

“He took that to heart. He’d always ask questions. ‘Hey, what should I do in this situation?’ He would work his butt off. He was just so smart on the basketball court, and it goes back to (former Grandview coach and now athletic director Scott) Parrish. Parrish would always put his players in those crucial moments in practice, like the last three minutes of a game.”

And Candanoza was always listening.

“He just worked so hard in practice. As a coach, it’s just nice to have your best player be your hardest worker,” Parrish said. “That (2002) group all worked really hard, and he was a big reason for that. They all really looked up to him.”

In the 2002 state championship game, Candanoza scored 27 points, made a pair of steals and pulled down three bounds, earning tournament MVP honors. Looking back at that performance a year later, Parrish said, “Phillip just wouldn’t let us lose.”

Although David Pendergraft was the first Brewster player named the SunDome’s Hall — the first male, period, when he and East Valley’s Elyse Mengarelli became the charter inductees last year — his prodigious accomplishments still aren’t quite on par with that of Roger Boesel a generation earlier.

Boesel

Yes, Pendergraft’s two state titles (and two tourney MVP selections might well have been three each had not he missed his entire sophomore year with an injury. But Roger Boesel played on back-to-back-to-back undefeated state Class B championship teams (1975-’76-’77) for the Bears.

A quarter-century later, his daughter one-upped him.

During her 2000-2003 reign of Class 1A terror, Jeni Boesel led the Bears to three state titles, rewrote the state-tournament scoring records with 400 points (25.0 average), and was named tourney MVP three times.

And it was very nearly four titles and four MVPs.

In the Bears’ 54-51 semifinal loss to King’s in her junior year, Boesel’s game-high 26 points included a go-ahead basket with 51 seconds remaining. But she fouled out seconds later, the Bears lost it at the foul line, and in the MVP voting, Boesel lost out to Toledo’s Beth Layton … by a single vote.

Local Report: CWU men stay unbeaten

November 28, 2010 by

NAMPA, Idaho — Chris Sprinker continued his standout play for Central Washington on Saturday, leading the unbeaten Wildcats to an 83-72 defeat of Sonoma State in the Crusaders Thanksgiving Classic at Northwest Nazarene.

A 6-foot-9 senior, Sprinker scored 19 points to go with five rebounds and two blocked shots in only 25 minutes of playing time as CWU improved to 4-0.

Friday night against 11th-ranked Metro State, Sprinker totaled 17 points, seven rebounds and five blocks in 20 minutes of floor time.

Against Sonoma (2-2), Jamar Berry had 15 points, Humberto Perez 13 and Coby Gibler 12 for the Wildcats, who open GNAC play Tuesday at Western Oregon.

“He’s taken his game to the next level,” Central coach Greg Sparling said of Sprinker. “It’s a nice luxury for us to have inside play from him, Coby Gibler’s playing well and so is Roby Clyde. But that’s a heckuva stat line that Chris put up this weekend in basically 45 minutes.”

After the Wildcats used a late first-half surge for a 44-32 lead at intermission, they made 12 of 18 field goal attempts in the final 20 minutes to pull away.

“They tried to take our inside game away and our perimeter people started heating up,” Sparling said. “We got better from last night to tonight. Our guys showed me something down here.”

He noted Perez’s 5-for-9 shooting, plus the overall play of frontcourt reserve Jody Johnson, the former Yakima Valley Community College standout.

“You look at his line,” Sparling said, “and he’s 2 for 3 from the floor, makes all four of his free throws, gets five rebounds. blocks a shot and gets a steal in 19 minutes. He does the dirty work you need to have someone step up and do.”

Central finished the game shooting 57 percent (27 for 47) from the field while the Seawolves shot 46 percent — including 37 percent in the first half.

Yaks reach LCC title game

LONGVIEW, Wash. — Ryan Dornik scored 23 points and Yakima Valley’s pressure defense forced 31 Mount Hood turnovers Saturday night as the Yaks beat the Saints 86-70 in the Red Devils Classic at Lower Columbia College.

The victory puts YVCC (2-0) in today’s 4 p.m. title game against the winner of a late game between Lower Columbia and Spokane.

Tomas Ogbaslassie and reserve Jordan Hill scored 15 points apiece and Willie Blodgett had 13 in limited playing time for Yakima Valley.

While the Yaks were forcing the taller Saints into 31 turnovers, they committed only nine.

“They were a very big team — 6-8, 6-9, 7-foot, and they had another 6-8 guy on the bench,” YVCC coach Ray Funk said. “So, taking a page out of my White Swan book, it was a classic size versus speed game, and speed won.”

Dornik made 8 of 12 shots, including 3 of 6 from 3-point range, and added four rebounds  and a steal. Blodgett, who scored 25 points in Yakima Valley’s Friday night win over Everett, played only 26 minutes due to early foul trouble.

“Johnnie Diggs came off the bench and Evan Berndt helped us, too. They might have tied us or even went ahead early in the second half, but our pressure just wore them down.”

Sprinker leads CWU men past No. 11 Metro

November 27, 2010 by

NAMPA, Idaho — Chris Sprinker totaled 17 points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots in only 20 minutes of play Friday as Central Washington beat 11th-ranked Metro State 71-55 in the Crusader Thanksgiving Classic at Northwest Nazarene.

Chris Scott came off the bench to add 15 points for the Wildcats, 3-0, who meet Sonoma State at 3 p.m. today.

“In the first half we had Sprinker, (Jamar) Berry, Humberto (Perez) and Scott all in foul trouble,” CWU coach Greg Sparling said. “But our guys responded when they needed to. I was very impressed with the way we played defense.”

Central limited the Roadrunners, from Denver, to 36 percent field goal shooting and out-rebounded them 44-28.

Coby Gibler came off the bench for eight boards, Roby Clyde had seven and another reserve, Jody Johnson, had six.

“Scott really stepped up for us, and Humberto hit some big threes,” Sparling said. “This was our first true test and I really liked the way our guys handled it. The kids came out with a little bit of swagger and built a lead, then they cut into the lead and then we built it back again.”

Sparling was especially pleased with his team’s defense on high-scoring Metro State forward Reggie Evans, who finished with eight points on 4-for-13 shooting.

“We had to play a lot of zone early because of our foul trouble,” Sparling said, “but we stayed solid and did a great job of rebounding against a team that had been clobbering people on the boards. And offensively we were very unselfish.”

Blodgett leads Yaks past Everett

LONGVIEW, Wash. — Willie Blodgett compiled 25 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and four steals as Yakima Valley opened its season Friday with a 90-82 win over Everett in the Red Devils Classic at Lower Columbia College.

Yakima Valley will meet Mount Hood at 6 p.m. today in a semifinal. The tournament concludes Sunday.

Ryan Dornik had 15 points while Terrell Evans had 11 points and 10 rebounds and Jordan Hill had 11 points for the Yaks, who will be without standout guard Jordan Kidd at least until mid-December due to academic ineligibility.

Blodgett, however, picked up where he left off last season. He was 8 of 15 from the field including 3 of 5 from 3-point range and made all six of his free throws in a stellar all-around performance.

“The kid plays with as much heart as anyone in the NWAACC,” coach Ray Funk said, “and he does things that don’t get statted. He’ll be the guy who saves the ball by diving out of bounds when someone makes a bad pass.”

YVCC fell behind 9-0, but responded with a 16-0 run before settling for a 42-41 lead at halftime. The second half was fairly even, Funk said, until the Yaks’ pressure defense began to take a toll.

“We had a fairly substantial run where it was steal-layup, steal-layup,” Funk said, “and we sort of wore them down. I don’t know if we have enough firepower just yet, or if our newcomers know what the NWAACC’s about just yet, so we may press more than we usually do in the early season to mask our offensive inefficiencies.”

EVERETT — Bryan Koch 5-9 4-7 15, Wruble 0-3 0-0 0, Landrus 2-5 4-4 9, Aaron Matzen 6-12 6-8 18, Kaska 3-14 1-2 9, Robinson 1-3 0-0 2, Ricky Mason 5-14 0-0 12, Cunnigan 1-5 0-0 2, McDaniels 1-2 1-2 3, Mattson 0-0 0-0 0, Shum 0-0 0-0 0, Devin Andrews 6-8 0-1 12, Nilles 0-1 0-0 0, McDaniels 0-0 0-0 0. Local talent has Central men thinking big this season||

YAKIMA — They will be just as tall as last year, and perhaps stronger. They should be deeper, once an early-season rash of injuries has run its course.

Davis High graduate Humberto Perez will be joined by former Eisenhower standout Drew Harris on a Central Washington University team that is seeking a fourth straight NCAA Division II postseason berth this season.||ANDY SAWYER/Yakima Herald-Republic file

Beyond that the Central Washington Wildcats will have a stronger Yakima Valley presence, and might well be better than the 2009-10 squad that went 16-11 and made a third straight NCAA Division II playoff appearance.

“This team definitely has potential,” said Greg Sparling, who’s starting his 16th season at the program’s helm, and is only Central’s fourth coach since 1930. “Right now we’re feeling the effects of some injuries and we haven’t been able to practice the way we’d like.”

The most serious problem has involved Toussaint Tyler, an energetic off-the-bench guard who last season averaged 11.6 points, fourth-best on the team. Tyler’s recovering from a dislocated right (shooting arm) elbow and is expected to return next week.

Central has started 2-0, however, and once all the components are available, the Wildcats figure to become a force worthy of upper-echelon GNAC contention with Seattle Pacific and Western Washington.

Two primary reasons are Humberto Perez, the 6-foot-2 former Davis superstar who coaches say is stronger and healthier for his senior season, and Drew Harris, the ex-Eisenhower point guard who seems the ideal player to run the show.

Harris transferred after two-plus seasons at Seattle University, and will join Perez, frontcourt returnees Chris Sprinker (6-9) and Roby Clyde (6-5) along with explosive newcomer Jamar Berry (6-5) in what will likely be Sparling’s first five.

Perez and Harris will not only provide the Wildcats with stellar play, they’ll provide the strongest Valley representation since Jason and Ryan Pepper in the 1990s, or all the way back to Dave Benedict and Dave Allen in the late 1960s.

“Humberto has hit the weight room,” Sparling said, “and it’s going to pay dividends. He’s still Humberto, shooting the heck out of the ball (a team-best .410 from 3-point range while averaging 10.5 points), but now he’s putting the ball on the floor and absorbing contract to get to the rim.”

Of Harris, Sparling said, “Drew’s a huge asset for us. We’re excited because he’s a local kid, but also because he’s a true point guard. He’s never in a big hurry and he’s a pass first, shoot second player. Our guys have a ton of confidence in him.”

So much so that the exit of J.C. Cook, last season’s scoring leader at 14.5 points, seemed of little consequence to Sparling and his staff. The coach said Cook, a senior-to-be shooting guard, initially told him he’d lost his passion for basketball but has since surfaced at NAIA Eastern Oregon.

While Sprinker and Clyde provide scoring, rebounding and shot blocking, Berry will probably excel at the small forward position with Harris and Perez running the backcourt.

Jody Johnson, a 6-4 forward who helped Yakima Valley Community College to the 2007 NWAACC championship and redshirted at CWU last year, will provide frontcourt depth.

Yet another Yakima product, Jordan Starr, has transferred to Central from Bellevue College. The 6-2 guard, who prepped at Davis, will redshirt this season, Sparling said.

A new team, a new direction?

November 25, 2010 by

Russell, Albrecht only notable returners as CWU women try to reverse fortunes||

YAKIMA — It’s an almost entirely new team, which for Central Washington women’s basketball fans is a good thing.

Because they wouldn’t want it to be like the old one.

The Wildcats were 7-19 last season, a year after going 7-20, that coming a year after they’d finished 13-13.

Preceding the recent downturn, however, Central had posted eight straight years of 15 or more wins, and Jeff Whitney, starting his 14th season as head coach, is hoping for a return to the relative good old days.

To that end he has retained his best player, 5-foot-10 guard-forward Sophie Russell, and has added no fewer than 12 new players, not counting redshirt freshman Kelsi Jacobson.

So far, so good. CWU is 3-0 going into its GNAC opener next Thursday at Saint Martin’s.

Russell, a junior from Olympia, scored a team-high 13.9 points a game last season while ranking second on the squad in blocked shots and third in rebounds.

“Sophie’s one of the top guards in our league,” Whitney said. “She’s giving up some minutes this year because we have more players, but she doesn’t mind. That takes some maturity.”

The only other player who saw substantial playing time is Stacy Albrecht, a 6-2 center who improved markedly last season and figures to start in the pivot.

Whitney brought in four transfers — guards Luv Rattler from Cameron University in Lawto n, Okla., Alisha Love from Bellevue College, and Nneka Payne from Sacramento State, plus center-forward Aleyse Evans from Loyola Marymount.

Rattler, some might recall, was a prep standout at Kentlake and Love, from Chelan, was the NWAACC Northern Region MVP last season at Bellevue.

CWU is also touting freshmen Deaira Gordon and Annie Martinez, from Ellensburg and East Valley, respectively

“Deaira and Daisy Burke (a frosh from Lewis and Clark in Spokane) have been playing extremely well,” said Whitney, who has added another ex-Red Devil in Angelina Mullen — known as Angie as an all-CWAC South Division first team honoree during her senior year in 2004.

“A blast from the past,” Whitney said, though Mullen, listed as a senior with no prior college basketball experience, didn’t see action in Central’s first three games.

Mullen, Rattler and Evans are the only seniors on a 15-player roster that includes seven freshmen.

“A key to our season,” Whitney said, “is our freshmen growing up in a hurry. Our starters are really very solid and our bench is much improved. So our freshmen are going to have to have some experience to help us in the later part of the season.”

Asked if he felt a sense of urgency, Whitney said, “I don’t know if it’s urgency — it comes down to players. They have to do the work. I don’t think you put that pressure on yourself.

“I don’t know what a good word for that is. We work with what we’ve got. We’ve been fortunate to have nine really good years, and now it is what it is and we try to move forward.”
