Rio unveils logo for 2016 Games
December 31, 2010 by The Associated Press
RIO DE JANERIO — The logo for the 2016 Olympics in Rio has been unveiled before more than 1 million New Year’s revelers on Copacabana beach.
The flowing symbol resembles three figures — orange, green and blue — embraced at the arms and in a flowing dance.
Carlos Nuzman, president of the Rio Olympic organizing committee, says the logo “conveys passion and transformation. The passion of all Cariocas and Brazilians for sport and celebration.”
Olympic organizers have said the Rio 2016 brand was created to reflect the city’s culture and represent its natural wonders and joyful residents. Organizers say the logo was based on four pillars: contagious energy, harmonious diversity, exuberant nature and Olympic spirit.
College basketball: Up-and-down night for Cats
December 31, 2010 by Roger Underwood
ELLENSBURG, Wash. — It started bad and finished worse for Central Washington on Thursday night, but you’d be amazed at what happened in between.
The 11th-ranked Wildcats, playing for the first time since Dec. 17 and for the first time in Nicholson Pavilion since Nov. 20, recovered from a sluggish getaway and had Alaska Anchorage on the ropes late before losing a GNAC contest to the Seawolves, 98-93 in double overtime.
Central trailed 18-11 early, by eight points at halftime and 13 early in the second 20 minutes, then rallied to lead by six late in regulation. But the Wildcats were unable to seal the deal, due in part to a controversial regulation-ending, overtime-necessitating play by Anchorage.
After CWU’s Chris Sprinker made one of two free throws with seven seconds to play, the Seawolves called time before inbounding. They then hurried the ball into the frontcourt before Central deflected it out of bounds with three-tenths of a second left.
The officials conferred and re-set the clock to 0.5 seconds, after which Anchorage threw a cross-court pass to Casey Robinson, who caught and shot a 3-pointer that was airborne at the buzzer before swishing to tie the score.
The Seawolves then built an 82-74 lead in the first five-minute overtime before Central, behind consecutive three balls from Jody Johnson and Chris Sprinker, tied it 82-82. The Wildcats had the ball with 4.3 seconds left, but were unable to get a shot off.
Anchorage (9-3) then scored the first four points of the second OT, all by 6-foot-9 center Taylor Rohde, and rolled to victory in their conference opener.
Rohde had game highs of 28 points and 15 rebounds while Brandon Walker had 23 points and Robinson 18.
Sprinker led Central (2-1 GNAC, 9-2 overall) with 23 points, Jamar Berry had 18, Humberto Perez 15 and Chris Scott 12, but the Wildcats were only 10 for 28 from 3-point range while Anchorage was 12 for 19.
Walker and Robinson connected on five long balls apiece.
“It comes down to making our free throws toward the end of regulation (CWU missed 2 of 3 from the line, including the front end of a 1-and-1, in the final 9.6 seconds),” Central coach Greg Sparling said. “We do that and the shot at the end doesn’t matter. But also, you tell me how the officials, with the naked eye and not having a replay, can add time to the clock at the end of regulation.
“Then tell me how a player can catch a ball, gather himself and then shoot it, all in 5-tenths of a second.”
Central continues conference play at home Saturday with a 3 p.m. game against Alaska Fairbanks.

Girls basketball: Pleasant surprise for Zillah
December 31, 2010 by Scott Sandsberry
YAKIMA, Wash. — When sizing up the girls field lined up for this week’s SunDome Shootout, Zillah coach Mindi Winters picked as an opponent White River, a perennial Class 3A contender that this year has dropped to 2A. Of everyone in the two-day event hosted by Zillah, the Hornets were the team Winters’ team was least likely to beat.
But she wanted them nonetheless.
“I knew they’d be tough, and I knew they’d play tough,” Winters said. “I knew it would be the kind of game to make us better.”
Then, knowing full well her team was likely to lose anyway, Winters sat her best player for most of the first period.
After which that player, Alisi Uasike, took over the game when it mattered most and the Leopards did the unthinkable, winning 45-40.
Uasike scored 12 of her game-high 22 points during a 14-3 third-quarter Zillah run that turned a 22-19 deficit into a 33-25 advantage.
Winters said she didn’t start Uasike because the senior standout might have been pressing a little bit, putting too much pressure on herself to do too much.
And Uasike didn’t mind a bit.
“I think it was better for me to sit and watch the game, see what the other team was doing. And it also kept me from getting in foul trouble,” grinned Uasike, for whom fouls have been a persistent problem this season. “It wasn’t frustrating at all. And coming off the bench, I wanted to be a spark for my team.”
She was definitely that. Her offensive heroics, plus steady performances from guard Michelle Tynan and forward Caitlin Myers, helped offset a 19-point night from White River’s Brooke Paulson. Uasike and Myers each sank a pair of free throws in the final 45 seconds to preserve the victory.
At times the Leopards (7-2) were their own worst enemies, missing one open shot after another. Prior to that third-quarter run, Zillah was 5-for-36 from the field, but made up for it with a ferocious effort on the glass. Despite giving up more than two inches per player, Zillah finished with a 45-41 rebounding edge over White River (6-4), with Myers, Uasike and Abbie Ziegler combining for 24 boards.
“I wouldn’t be surprised (to win the rebounding battle),” Uasike said. “We’re not a very big team, but we play like we’re a big team.”
And, just maybe, a very good one.
“It tells me (the Leopards) have more heart than I thought,” Winters said. “And, to be honest, I was a little worried about that,” Winters said.
Not any more.
Boys basketball: Fiander scores 33 to lift WS
December 31, 2010 by Scott Sandsberry
YAKIMA, Wash. — This was one Lawrence Fiander had been looking for a long time. A year’s worth, in fact. One calendar’s worth, since another night on this same SunDome court, in this same SunDome Shootout.
And Fiander made sure this year’s outcome was different than the last time he and his White Swan teammates faced Granger.
“I just wanted my revenge for last year. They spanked us pretty bad last year, right here,” White Swan’s shifty, cat-quick junior guard said after a 33-point, five-steal, three-assist performance in White Swan’s 72-68 victory over the Spartans.
In a game that had all of the intensity of a state-tournament game — appropriately on a state-tournament court as well — Fiander and teammate Leander Huereca (16 points) outduelled the Spartans’ 1-2-3 punch of Brandon Oswalt (24 points), Andrew Reddout (14 points, six assists) and Brandon Castro (12 points).
And the fact that it was a showdown of teams that are almost certainly state-tourney bound in that venue was not lost on Fiander.
“This shows our team can handle this type of place, a big arena like this, in front of a lot of fans, in this kind of atmosphere,” he said.
It looked like the Cougars (8-1) might run the Spartans (6-2) right out of the building when they jumped out to a 10-0 lead, with nine of those points coming from Fiander. But Oswalt scored 10 points before the first period was out and the Spartans went up 28-20 midway through the second period. Granger maintained the advantage until a 10-0 Cougar run midway through the third period gave White Swan a 47-42 lead.
In that 10-point run, which took just 1:33, Fiander scored two baskets and found sophomore Alex Sampson for a couple of open 3-pointers.
“Yeah, I know when Alex is hot,” Fiander said with a grin. “He’s my little cousin.”
But just when White Swan seemed to have the game in hand with a 56-49 lead early in the fourth quarter, the Spartans roared back, with the second of a pair of Castro 3-pointers putting Granger on top 66-64. But the Spartans missed four straight free throws down the stretch, and Fiander scored White Swan’s last six points to put the game away.

Boys basketball: Fight to the finish for Zillah
December 30, 2010 by Scott Spruill
Zillah triumphs despite shaky shooting night ||
YAKIMA, Wash. — After the fact, given a moment for a deep sigh of relief and a wipe of the brow, teams that win games like this learn as valuable a lesson as there is in basketball.
If your efforts are cosmetically challenged — ugly, to be more precise — you still have to find a way to win. Overcome yourself to overcome your opponent.
Zillah’s boys had just such a day on Wednesday, when the Leopards found themselves midway through the fourth quarter with just 30 points and 41 missed shots.

But a lot of defense and a closing rush turned an evening of frustration into a well-earned victory as Zillah defeated Vashon 42-33 on opening day of the 11th annual SunDome Shootout.
The Leopards missed all manner of shots against the tall and long Pirates, but when Vashon opened the final period with an 8-0 burst — which tied the game at 30-30 — an exasperated coach Doug Burge saw his kids dig deep when it mattered most.
Joel Yellow Owl pierced Vashon’s tight zone for back-to-back baskets and Mitchell Zapien snapped out of a forgettable shooting night with four straight baskets as the Leopards closed the game on a 12-3 run.
“You know, it would be hard for us to shoot that badly again,” said Burge, whose team was 12-for-53 heading into the final four minutes. “We rushed our shots all night, and nothing came easy. But we were always working hard, and the kids got it done at the end. It was a tough win.”
Zillah (6-2) may have been 27 points under its season average on offense, but its defense was never better. Vashon (4-3), which graduated four starters off last season’s third-place state team but still has 6-foot-7 Alex Wegner, committed 20 turnovers and had no players score in double figures.
“We were pretty frustrated because we had so many open looks that didn’t go in,” said senior guard Scottie Riojas, who scored six of his 11 points in the third period. “But a good team as to play through that. We didn’t let the frustration get to us.”
Zapien especially. The senior sharp-shooter, who scored 28 and 24 points in his first two games, missed 15 of his first 17 shots and had five points when Vashon drew even with four minutes left.
But after Yellow Owl’s pair of baskets, Zapien finished 4-for-4 and ended up with a game-high 13 points. Yellow Owl, who had his own issues with a 2-for-9 first half and foul trouble, contributed 10 points and nine rebounds.
“We hadn’t played since the (Dec.) 18th and the break is always tough, but those are excuses,” Burge said. “Vashon is big and every shot was challenged. It got into our heads, we started to press and it got contagious. But I like how we worked hard and battled — that’s what you take from a game like this.”
The Leopards take a four-game win streak into today’s 7:30 p.m. game against Lakeside.
