Local report — Zillah hands football reins to Strother

December 22, 2010 by

ZILLAH, Wash. — Not taking long or looking far, Zillah hired from within to replace Rock Winters as head football coach.

Tim Strother, a 1997 Zillah graduate and last season’s offensive coordinator, has been promoted to the head varsity position for next season. Winters stepped down last month.

Strother, a teacher at Zillah Intermediate School, takes over a program that hasn’t lost a SCAC West game since 2007. His twin brother, Don, is the head football coach at conference rival Goldendale.

Baldwin, Eagles wing it all the way to title game

December 22, 2010 by

On Oct. 20, 2007, hours before Central Washington’s game against Western Washington in the Battle in Seattle, WWU’s longtime sports information director Paul Madison noticed a youthful looking person wearing CWU attire strolling through the spacious the Qwest Field press box.
“Can I help you?” Madison asked politely.
Extending a hand, the CWU person said, “I’m Beau Baldwin.”
Madison, as professional as they get, was clearly surprised. Baldwin looked more like a Central sophomore than the school’s head football coach.
But don’t let the boyish face fool you.
While exceedingly polite and uncommonly pleasant, Baldwin also is intensely competitive.
Witness his Eastern Washington Eagles.

Go Beau.
And congratulations.
That’s pretty much the mindset of anyone who has ever met Beau Baldwin, the former Central Washington quarterback, assistant and head coach who has led Eastern Washington to historic playoff heights.
With the Eagles scheduled to meet Delaware on Jan. 7 for the FCS national championship, Baldwin has also become a finalist for the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year award.
Baldwin, 38, is known primarily for being Jon Kitna’s backup at Central. But the Curtis High School alum was also a two-time team captain whose career completion percentage of .614 remains a school record.
He also led one of the Wildcats greatest comebacks, hitting 21 of 33 passes for 222 yards as CWU scored 26 fourth-quarter points for a 29-28 victory over Eastern Oregon in 1992.
A year earlier, Beau set single-game Central records for attempts (52), completions (32), yards (467), total plays (66) and total yards (550) in a 38-35 win over Simon Fraser. His 6-yard TD pass with four seconds left won it.
In is lone season as Central’s coach, 2007, he led the Wildcats to a 10-3 record, won the program’s first NCAA Division II playoff game and CWU advanced to the quarterfinals.
But when Paul Wulff left Eastern for Washington State following the 2007 season, Baldwin, who had been Wulff’s offensive coordinator for four seasons, was lured back to Cheney.

And the rest is becoming increasingly compelling history.

Ike finds the win column

December 22, 2010 by

Cadets battle past West Valley for first victory||

YAKIMA — You’d never have known it was December, or that the collective record of the teams involved was 1-9.

Or, even, that the game was non-league.

Eisenhower and West Valley, having clearly had limited success to date, went at each other in a  baseline-to-baseline battle for four hard quarters Tuesday night, and when the final buzzer signaled a 55-51 Cadet victory in Ike Gym, a celebration of substantial proportions ensued.

“Yeah,” first-year Ike coach Brad Schultz said, an ear-to-ear grin making his remarks obvious, “it feels … really good.”

Said Cadets football coach Dan Eyman, obviously recalling the feeling as he gave Schultz a hug, “The first one’s always the hardest.”

And perhaps most enjoyable.

Cody Clayton scored 17 points and Tanner Urlacher included a monster 3-pointer in his 12-point evening as Ike, only 72 hours removed from a 30-point pasting at Davis, recorded its first victory in six tries.

“Back to back rival games are tough,” Schultz said. “We got down early at Davis and one of our focuses tonight was to come out better. We did that, we limited our turnovers and just did an overall better job.”

Against the unbeaten Pirates’ full-court pressure, Eisenhower committed 10 turnovers in the first quarter. Tuesday they had 10 the whole game.

They also got several clutch performances — most notably the aforementioned 3-ball from Urlacher — a bomb from the right side that put Ike ahead 50-46 with 1:40 to play.

Clayton rebounded a miss by WV’s Tyler Cluff with 29.7 seconds left and made one of two free throws, but Austin Strock, fouled on an offensive rebound, converted two to make it 51-48, Ike, with 19.8 seconds to play.

From there, however, Cadet senior Geno Garcia made four consecutive free throws to ice it.

Among the keys to his first head coaching triumph, Schultz said, was moving Urlacher to the point and shifting freshman point guard Josh Gasseling to the wing.

“The 3-pointer came on a play where we were rotating the ball well,” said Urlacher, a 6-foot-3 senior. “I just got it and let it go, in my rhythm, and it felt good.”

Said Schultz, “You probably saw a little fist pump from me on that one.”

And a bigger one when the game ended.

Ike’s active 2-3 zone defense held West Valley (0-2 league, 1-5 overall) in check with the exception of Ryan Gilliam, a 6-0 junior who connected on 6 of 8 3-pointers en route to a game-high 23 points.

“We knew he was a shooter,” Schultz said. “We didn’t know he was that good a scorer.”

Strock added 12 points, hitting 8 of 9 free throws, but no other Ram had more than six points.

Andy Soto had 10 for Ike (0-2, 1-5), which had no scorer reach double figures against Davis.

“This will really help our confidence,” Urlacher said. “We’re just starting to come together, and our team chemistry is developing. But now we’ll have the crowds supporting us since we’ve gotten a win.”

WEST VALLEY — Peake 6, Cluff 2, Dresker 4, Austin Strock 12, Ryan Gilliam 23, Robles 0, Wallace 0, Hunter 2, Mollett 2. Totals 17-42 11-16 51.

EISENHOWER — Gasseling 6, Cody Clayton 17, Tanner Urlacher 12, Andy Soto 10, Ab. Soto 0, Oldham 0, Nickens 0, Phin 6, Garcia 4. Totals 18-37 14-23 55.

West Valley    19    8    14    10    —    51

Eisenhower    14    17    8    15    —    55

Shooting percentages — FG: WV 405; Ike .486; FT: WV .688; Ike 609. 3-point goals — WV 6-16 (Peake 0-1, Cluff 0-3, Dresker 0-2, Gilliam 6-8, Mollett 0-1); Ike 5-12 (Gasseling 1-3, Urlacher 3-5, Garcia 0-1, An. Soto 1-3). Fouled out — Dresker, Strock. Rebounds — WV 25 (Peake 5, Dresker 5, Strock 5); Ike 22 (Phin 4). Turnovers — WV 13, Ike 10. Total fouls — WV 21, Ike 16.

Mustangs corral five all-state football spots

December 21, 2010 by

Zillah’s Deardorff lone area two-way selection||

YAKIMA — Making an unbeaten run through the CWAC and putting together a 10-game win streak earned Prosser plenty of recognition on the Class 2A all-state football team, which was announced by the Associated Press on Tuesday.

Five players for the Mustangs were selected and four of them earned first-team status.

Zillah’s Nathaniel Deardorff was the lone Valley athlete to be tabbed first team at two positions, getting the honor in Class 1A on the offensive and defensive lines.

Ellensburg’s Kramer Ferrell was another notable standout, making the 2A first team at wide receiver for the third straight year.

Much of Prosser’s all-state haul came on defense, which recorded three shutouts. Charlie Peterson (line), Cesar Lopez (linebacker) and Dominic Garza (secondary) all earned first-team honors on defense, while Ryan Nehls was a first-team pick on the offensive line.

Goldendale, the SCAC West runner-up to Zillah, had a pair of first-team 1A defensive picks in Blake Lesko (linebacker) and Anthony Dobson (secondary).

Lyle-Wishram’s Henry Matai, who finished his 8-man rushing career with 6,523 yards, was a first-team 1B selection at running back.

For the third straight year, the AP’s state player of the year comes from Skyline. For the previous two years, it was quarterback Jake Heaps. Now, it’s Kasen Williams, the kid that caught plenty of Heaps’ throws.

Along with being the player of the year in all classifications, Williams was voted the player of the year in Class 4A.

Williams capped his already stellar high school career by catching 86 passes for 1,579 yards and 21 touchdowns. He had six games of eight or more catches, including 10 grabs for 242 yards and three touchdowns in the state quarterfinals against Issaquah. He finished his career at Skyline with 235 receptions for 4,121 yards and 56 receiving touchdowns, winning three state championships and finishing second this season.

And like his father, Williams will play his college ball at nearby Washington.

In other classifications, player of the year honors went to Capital’s Tyler Sundberg (3A), Tumwater’s Kyle Warner (2A), Connell’s Matt Hadley (repeating at 1A), South Bend’s Ryan Vongmixay (2B) and Lummi’s Eric Robinson (1B).
