Snowmobiler captures seventh X Games medal ||
ASPEN, Colo. — Yakima’s Joe Parsons bounced back from his fourth-place finish in Thursday’s Snowmobile Freestyle event to win the gold medal in the Snowmobile Speed and Style competition Friday at the Winter X Games.
Parsons’ score of 93.59 in the final bested the 89.66 put up by Heath Frisby.
Fris-by beat Parsons on style points in the final, which re-quired Parsons to beat Frisby by four seconds. He ended up winning by seven seconds.
The victory gives Parsons his seventh career Winter X Games medal and third gold medal, tying him with Levi LeVallee for third on the all-time medal list.
“It means I feel old now,” Parsons told ESPN.com. “I just turned 23 and that’s like old age. When I’m older and can hang them up and look at what I’ve accomplished, it will be really cool. Right now, I just want more.”
It’s his third medal in Speed and Style following a bronze in 2008 and gold in 2009. The event was not contested in the 2010 X Games.
Parsons’ other medals came in the Freestyle (gold in 2009, silver in 2010 and 2008) and Knock Out (bronze in 2010).
Parsons has a chance to add to his collection in Sunday’s Best Trick competition.
Parsons was second after a preliminary seeding session Friday morning.
He breezed past Ted Culbertson in the quarterfinals and held off a stern challenge from national snocross racer Cory Davis in the semifinals.
Davis defeated Daniel Bodin in the bronze-medal race.
Speed and Style is a combination timed and judged event. Two snowmobilers race head-to-head, trying to cross the finish line first, but also performing tricks along the way.
Boys basketball: WV up to the challenge

Strock answers his coach’s call, leads the Rams past Sunnyside ||
YAKIMA, Wash. — Suffice it to say, West Valley coach Jon Kinloch has spent much of this year challenging his team’s leading scorer, Austin Strock.
First it was over Strock’s errant free throws.
“I was struggling at the beginning of the year,” Strock recalled. “My coach really challenged me on that.”
Then it was the 6-foot-4 sophomore’s occasional penchant to go on cruise control.

“Austin Strock has a tremendous upside,” said Kinloch, a former Gonzaga University standout in his first head-coaching job. “He’s very athletic, he’s got the long arms. But we have had to challenge him to go all-out for extended periods of time. He sometimes takes plays off.”
After all that challenging, there was Strock — at the tail end of a monster 28-point, 10-rebound effort Friday against Sunnyside — standing at the foul line with 17 seconds left and his team hanging on to a tenuous one-point lead.
And he was as cool as could be.
“I felt pretty comfortable shooting them. I’ve really been practicing them a lot,” Strock said of his two free throws that nailed down the Rams’ 54-51 victory. “You just gotta do what you do.”
What Strock did Friday was take advantage of some stellar interior passing, notably from sophomore guard Tyler Cluff (four assists) and a sensational alley-oop pass from Ryan Gilliam that Strock stuffed through the hoop.
But what won for the Rams (4-6 CBBN 3A, 6-10 overall) was their expanding, amoeba-like zone defense that harassed Sunnyside’s Israel Manzo — a 20.3 scorer coming into Friday — to 3-for-19 shooting and nine total points. Trey Serl picked up some of the slack with three treys and 13 points, but in the game’s final second it was Manzo missing a hurried 3-pointer, ending a night in which the normally deadeye sharpshooter was just 1-for-9 from beyond the arc.
“Israel Manzo is a very capable basketball player,” Kinloch said. “The only thing working against him is that he’s only 5-7, but he’s really good. That’s why we played a zone tonight, to be honest — he’s hurt us in the past with us playing man against him. And tonight, for him to shoot like that … that’s an outstanding defensive effort.”
Andrew Daley just missed a double-double for the Grizzlies (4-6, 6-10) with nine points and 11 rebounds, while West Valley got a seven-point, nine-rebound night from junior forward Jason Dresker.
But, aside from Strock’s huge night, the Rams’ biggest moment of the game was provided by 6-2 forward Steven Mollett. With 1:25 remaining, Mollett took an interior pass from Cluff, whirled and — with the four arms of two defenders in his face — hit a twisting nine-foot fallaway to put West Valley in front 52-51.
“That,” Kinloch said, “was huge.”
And three Sunnyside misses later — two errant free throws and a 3-pointer that clanged off the back iron — Strock answered his challenge at the foul line and put it away, keeping the Rams in the thick of the chase for the CBBN 3A’s six district berths.
“This was a must win for us,” Strock said.
Consider that challenge answered

Boys basketball: Davis rolls after halftime

Pirates pull away for win, sets up matchup for first tonight at Chiawana ||
YAKIMA, Wash. — They’ve become sort of like a grade-school kid who keeps forgetting his lunch pail. It’s somewhat annoying to those directly affected, but eventually it becomes something to joke about.
“People keep asking us why we do this,” David Trimble said, smiling. “It’s not like we don’t want to play well in the first half. Maybe we should tell them that we just don’t want them to leave early.”
And none of Davis’ followers did Friday night, given that their fifth-ranked Pirates had shrugged off a one-point halftime deficit to overwhelm Walla Walla, 71-49 in CBBN 4A play on their home floor.
The victory not only improved Davis to 7-1 in league play and 14-2 overall, it set up tonight’s rematch at Chiawana against a Riverhawks team that won 80-74 here on Jan. 8.
And since Chiawana lost 54-44 Friday night at Richland, tonight’s game will be for undisputed possession of first place.
“Our kids are mature enough that I don’t think they thought about tomorrow night,” Pirates coach Eli Juarez. “And we didn’t have to say a lot tonight. There was no yelling.”
Juarez simply asked his players to take better care of the ball — they had 13 of their 18 turnovers in the first half — and to establish themselves inside.
Doing both, Davis used a 13-2 run to end the third quarter and a 6-0 burst to start the fourth for a 55-40 lead that Wa-Hi (4-5, 7-9) would never threaten.
And while Trimble had 13 points, seven rebounds and several slick assists to go with Jackson Marquis’ 11 points, reserve Ray Navarro scored 14 of his game-high 18 points to keep the Pirates afloat amid their first-half struggles.
His production was even more timely given the continued absence of junior starter Devonte’ Luckett, Davis’ second-leading scorer, who is academically ineligible. His status will be reevaluated next week.
“The thing is,” Trimble said, “we have a lot of guys who can play, like Raymond. He’s automatic.”
And the 5-foot-11 junior was exactly that in the first two periods — not missing in five field goal attempts including three from 3-point range.
Navarro finished 6 for 7, and in fact marksmanship was not an issue for the Pirates collectively. They finished 27 for 46 (.587) and were 16 for 22 (.727) in the second half, during which they outscored the Blue Devils 43-20.
Amaris Carter scored seven points and grabbed seven rebounds to help Davis’ 32-28 advantage on the boards, and Levonte Allen, starting in place of Luckett, had seven points and five boards.
Matt Watson, a burly 6-1 senior, led Walla Walla with 11 points and nine rebounds.

ELLENSBURG 64, SELAH 44: At Ellensburg, Wash., Joe Montano had 14 points and nine rebounds, and Corey Dunlop had 13 points and six assists to power Ellensburg.
