Wrestling: Senior captains help Zillah chart course past Granger

January 28, 2011 by

ZILLAH, Wash. — It was the last time under the lamp for Zillah’s four senior co-captains, and each of them responded Thursday night in exactly the same way.

Maximum power, maximum points.

Rodney Treece, Kyle Kluever, Chris Castillo and Nathaniel Deardorff all delivered pins in the upper weights and propelled the Leopards to a 36-27 victory over Granger to finish off an unbeaten run through SCAC West dual meets.

With the district tournament next week across town at Zillah’s Alumni Gym, Thursday’s regular-season finale at the high school was the last opportunity for the elder Leopards to enjoy their familiar spotlight on the home mat.

“I was definitely thinking about that, just like the last football game,” Deardorff said. “The last time here to compete in this gym and against our rival. We won this last year and we never want to give that up.”

With the match starting at 135 pounds, Kluever, Castillo and Deardorff produced consecutive pins at 171, 189 and 215 to open a 33-9 lead.

Granger rallied hard by winning five of the final six matches, pulling the Spartans into a 7-7 tie with Zillah for overall wins, but five of the Leopards’ wins came via pin and the six-point maximum.

“It was our last time running out here, and it was parents night,” said Castillo, who wrestled at 189 for the first time in his career and produced a 28-second pin. “We told the younger guys, ‘Win for your parents, win for the team and win for the seniors.’ They really came through.”

Those young guys included three sophomores and a junior who all lost over the final four matches but only by decision, keeping Granger from making up extra ground when it still had a chance to catch Zillah.

“I’m proud of the way the seniors performed. Very strong,” noted Zillah coach Mike Gonzales, whose team finished 6-0 in the West while Granger ended up 5-1. “But those young kids and the way they sucked it up — it gave me chills.”

In a bit of strategy, Castillo pushed his weight over his normal 160 so he could bump to 189, where he faced one of the best around in Abidan Duarte. Castillo’s quick pin, which improved his season record to 32-0, took a big chunk out of Granger’s upper-weight potential.

Granger came in with two unbeaten wrestlers and they stayed that way. Heavyweight Pete Almaguer recorded a first-period pin and Joshua Salcedo took a 6-4 decision at 112 as both moved to 32-0.

Drawing 135 as the starting weight turned out good for Zillah, which got on the board quick with Shane McMurray’s 33-second pin for a 6-0 lead. The Spartans were within 15-9 when Kluever, Castillo and Deardorff reeled off their pins.

“We always like to build up to the big (postseason) meets and this was a great way to get started,” said Deardorff, who pushed his season record to 25-2. “We had a lot of emotion and excitement tonight and we need to keep that going.”

Scott scores 20 as CWU men beat Fairbanks

January 28, 2011 by

FAIRBANKS, Alaska — It was far from Central Washington’s best game, coach Greg Sparling reported, but the 14th-ranked Wildcats nonetheless left Fairbanks on Thursday night with the one thing they needed going into Saturday’s GNAC showdown at Alaska Anchorage.

Central, getting a career-high 20 points from reserve guard Chris Scott, extended their winning streak to seven with an 82-70 thumping of Alaska Fairbanks at the Patty Center.

The victory, in which CWU led by 19 points with 6:43 to play, set up Saturday’s rematch with the Seawolves for the conference lead.

Central (9-1 conference, 16-2 overall) fell 98-93 in double overtime to Anchorage (8-1, 16-4) on Dec. 30 in Ellensburg.

“We had 17 turnovers, which is not our best performance,” Sparling said. “And we tried to bounce the ball too much instead of doing what we usually do, which is to set good screens and use them. But I thought our pressure really bothered them and we did a lot better on the boards this time.”

Jamar Berry had 18 points for CWU and Jody Johnson came off the bench for 12 points and six rebounds.

The Wildcats made only 12 of 22 first-half free throws en route to a 44-31 lead, but hit 19 of 24 from the line in the second half. CWU’s 46 foul shots were the program’s most in nearly eight years.

UAF (2-7, 5-11), which got 31 points from NCAA Division II national scoring leader Parrish West (28.3 average coming in), got within 53-45 with 11:18 to play, but a 17-6 Central run sealed the game.

“A win’s a win in the GNAC, especially on the road,” Sparling said. “Chris Scott had the best game he’s played in a Central uniform. Now we can turn our focus to Anchorage. We’ll see what we can do.”

CENTRAL WASHINGTON — Jamar Berry 5-9 8-9 18, Clyde 3-3 1-2 7, Sprinker 1-6 1-5 3, Perez 2-4 0-0 5, Harris 1-5 5-8 7, Chris Scott 5-7 7-7 20, Lieser 0-1 0-0 0, Dunn 0-0 2-4 2, Gibler 3-7 2-6 8, Jody Johnson 3-5 5-5 12, Nelson 0-0 0-0 0. Totals 23-47 31-46 82.

Central, after a see-saw first half, trailed 30-29 at intermission and fell behind by as many as 16 points in the final 20 minutes.

Prep report: Pirates make most of perseverance

January 28, 2011 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — Mired in a nightmare start to Tuesday’s home game, Quantae Anderson called a timeout to settle his Davis girls basketball team down. West Valley had shot out to a 12-0 lead in the first quarter and the Pirates, well, they were kind of a mess.

Look, he told his young crew, let’s calm down and start playing together. Where’s my team, he asked.

Back on the floor the haywire efforts continued for Davis, and the next time Anderson had his Pirates gathered around the quarter was over and the hole had deepened to 19-0.

See that score-board and one word comes to mind: Insurmountable.

Anderson just tried to break it down into manageable parts.

“We looked like five individuals out there on offense and defense, and the girls were kind of in shock,” he said. “West Valley came out in a 1-2-2 zone and we were stagnant against it, and defensively we were out of position way too much. We tried to get focused on some things we could fix.”

Opening the second quarter, the offense finally produced as Taryn Cobane hit a short jumper, sending up a big cheer of relief from the home crowd.

By the time the Pirates got in the locker room for halftime it was a game, albeit still an 11-point deficit at 23-12. Since Davis had outscored West Valley 12-4 in the second period, the courtside exclamations had changed from ‘No. no, stop doing that!’ to ‘Yes, keep doing what you’re doing!’

But, as all coaches know, making it a game and finishing a rally are two completely different things. That, in fact, had been a recent problem for Davis in some tough CBBN 4A losses.

The Pirates narrowed the gap to 28-21 after three quarters, then turned to Cobane, a four-year varsity veteran, to bring them home. And she responded with the biggest shots of her career, burying two 3-pointers in the final 1:07 to lift Davis to a 38-35 victory.

“There were three timeouts in the fourth quarter and I just kept saying, ‘We’re going to do this. We’re going to win this game,’” Anderson said. “They had worked so hard and chased for so long — that was a lot of pressure to be under. That’s probably the most happy I’ve seen them, even after Davis-Ike games.”

Tuesday’s win gave Davis a 4-0 record against West Valley and Eisenhower this season, and gave the Pirates a crucial boost of confidence heading into a big game at Walla Walla tonight.

“That was probably our best defense of the season for three quarters,” Anderson added. “Of course the first quarter was the complete opposite, but we came back and were able to finish. Our word was perseverance.”

Coaches vs. Cancer

East Valley and Granger are both hosting basketball games in the coming days that will be part of the Coaches vs. Cancer program.

East Valley’s home doubleheader with Toppenish on Saturday will include a potato feed, which starts at 5 p.m., in the commons. All proceeds will be donated to North Star Lodge Cancer Care Services.

Granger will stage its events, which include a pink ball and game uniforms for the girls, at the Feb. 4 home doubleheader against Cle Elum. The Spartans get pledges of support for every point they score, and donations will be gathered at halftime and sent on to the American Cancer Society chapter in the Tri-Cities.

Since the program’s inception in 1993, high school and college coaches across the country have raised more than $45 million to help fund research, education and local programs.

Kennewick loses state volleyball

The WIAA made it official this week, approving two westside colleges as sites for next season’s Class 4A, 3A and 2A state volleyball tournaments.

Those tournaments had previously been held at Kennewick’s Toyota Center over three days. Yakima will still host the 1A, 2B and 1B tournaments on the SunDome’s five-court configuration.

All of the tournaments this fall will be held over two days on Nov. 11-12 with some possible format changes awaiting final approval.

The 4A and 3A tournaments will be held in Lacey at Saint Martin’s University, which will have a three-court layout, while the 2A tourney will be hosted on two courts at Olympia’s Evergreen State College.

Proposed changes in scheduling involve making all consolation-bracket matches to best-of-3 and altering the final places of non-championship finals. For instance, semifinal losers would play for third and fourth instead of third and sixth.

Those changes, however, have another round of review in March.

Castillo gets his record

Zillah’s Chris Castillo went 3-0 in last Saturday’s Dream Duals in Spokane, and in doing so broke the Valley’s all-time career record for wins.

But it wasn’t easy.

The three-time state champion had a much-anticipated showdown with Orting’s Nikko Veltri, who won last year’s 1A state title at 145 pounds while Castillo was dominating the 152 field.

Both wrestlers moved up one weight class this season, and Veltri bumped to 160 to meet Castillo on Saturday. Castillo got a takedown in the first period and eventually won 3-2.

“We needed that,” said Zillah coach Mike Gonzales. “It was good for Chris to get pushed in the third period. We ran into the Orting guys during the summer and said, ‘We need to get these guys together.’ It was good for both.”

Castillo added wins against Riverside and Lakeside, pushing his career wins to 159. Former teammate Skylor Davis held the previous record at 156.
