Class 1B: SC boys, girls move on

February 26, 2011 by

EAST WENATCHEE, Wash. — After a less-than-stellar first half, Sunnyside Christian showed their championship credentials after the break.

Behind Trevor Wagenaar and Steven Broersma on offense, and an air-tight halfcourt defense, the Knights broke open a close game and rolled to a 51-33 victory over Moses Lake Christian in a Class 1B state regional boys basketball game Friday night at Eastmont High.

“It’s an awesome thing. It’s a nice accomplishment for the kids,” Sunnyside Christian coach Dean Wagenaar said of his defending state champions advancing to the quarterfinals next week in Spokane. “People have asked me about the new format, ‘Do you like it?’ If we get to Spokane, I like it.”

For a while Friday, it looked like second-ranked Sunnyside Christian (22-2) might have to work a little harder to earn that trip, leading just 21-18 at the break thanks to some sloppy play on its own part.

“We had too many turnovers,” Dean Wagenaar said, noting that most of Moses Lake Christian’s first-half scoring was the result of transition points off those mistakes.

“It was a little intense in the locker room at halftime,” he continued, “but they did a great job controling the game in the third quarter.”

Sunnyside Christian outscored MLC 18-9 in the third — 30-15 in the half — with Trevor Wagenaar and Broersma combining for 16 of those points. Wagenaar had nine of his game-best 18 in the period, and Broersma seven of his 15.

Broersma also finished with 11 rebounds, and Kevin De Jong had 13 points and 15 rebounds for the winners.

Moses Lake Christian will face Colton, a 66-55 winner over Wellpinit on Friday, in a winner-to-the-quarterfinals, loser-out game today.

GIRLS

Knights cruise past Lions

EAST WENATCHEE, Wash. — Marisa Broersma scored 18 points to lead Sunnyside Christian to a 59-25 victory over Moses Lake Christian in a matchup for a Class 1B state quarterfinal berth on Friday at Eastmont High School.

The victory earned the Knights a No. 1 seed in the quarterfinals.

Broersma was joined in double-figures by Analisa VanOostrum with 15.

Janelle DeGroot grabbed 15 rebounds in addition to her six points, while guard Alyssa Haak had eight rebounds for the Knights (21-3).

Moses Lake Christian was led by McKenna Walker, who scored 11 points.

Moses Lake Christian (20-4) will face Hunters in a loser-out game at 1 p.m. today.

4A boys: Pirates pushed to the brink

February 26, 2011 by

Davis will face second-ranked Ferris in a loser-out contest this afternoon ||

RICHLAND, Wash. — Powered by a 17-3 run to open the second quarter, Gonzaga Prep’s boys avenged a December loss to Davis with a 72-59 victory over the Pirates in a Class 4A first-round state basketball game Friday night at Richland High School.

Parker Kelly scored 17 of his game-high 21 points in GP’s momentum-setting first half. He made three of the Bullpups’ six 3-pointers.

The Pirates trimmed the deficit to 58-53 by scoring the first two baskets of the fourth quarter, but Gonzaga Prep answered with a 6-0 burst to pull away.

Davis (19-4) can still advance to the state finals in Tacoma next week but to do so must beat Ferris today in a 3 p.m. loser-out game at Richland. The second-ranked Saxons (23-2), who were upset by Gonzaga Prep in last week’s GSL district final, defeated Evergreen of Vancouver 62-49 on Friday.

CBBN 4A player of the year David Trimble led Davis with 17 points. Jackson Marquis contributed 14 points and Markus McClurkin chipped in 12 points with two of Davis’ four 3-pointers.

Davis was whistled for 18 fouls and Gonzaga Prep had 16. The Pirates made 13 of 17 free throws while the Bullpups connected on 12 of 18.

Gonzaga Prep (20-3), winner of 11 in a row, advances to the 4A state quarterfinals next Thursday in the Tacoma Dome.

The Pirates had defeated the Bullpups 59-46 in a December game in the SunDome.

1A girls: La Salle is Domeward bound

February 26, 2011 by

Unbeaten Lightning moves on ||

YAKIMA, Wash. — To the uninitiated, those yet to enjoy watching La Salle’s girls before Friday night, the experience must have been eye-opening.

Just ask the Lakeside Eagles, who became the Lightning’s 24th victim in as many games this season, 52-29 in a first-round Class 1A state tournament game in Ike Gym.

New classification? No problem.

Second-ranked La Salle, runner-up in last year’s Class 2B tournament in Spokane, will next play in a 1A quarterfinal at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the SunDome. Its opponent has not yet been determined.

“It’ll be a little weird, playing in the SunDome instead of Spokane,” said senior standout Savannah Bonny, who led all scorers with 19 points and produced her usual amount of everywhere-at-once defense. “But it’s what we’ve been working toward, so we’re excited.”

Not to mention very, very good.

From Bonny, who made one of her trademark head-first dives to save an offensive rebound and led the Lightning with 11 boards, to Lauren DeGooyer who scored 10 points, to sophomore center Danielle Kaschmitter, rewarded with a double high-five from coach Alyssa Goins after scoring on a left-handed spin move from the lane, La Salle was a study in defensive intensity and offensive efficiency.

“Defensive pressure and intensity has been our focus all week,” Goins said, “particularly because Lakeside has two really good guards. I was pleased with how we handled them, and with other aspects of our play as well.”

The Lightning’s full-court, man-to-man pressure forced 26 turnovers off which La Salle scored half its points. It also held Lakeside (17-10) scoreless for long stretches of time.

The Eagles, topped by guard Tayler Flemming’s 11 points, managed only two points in the second period, which ended with La Salle in command 30-15.

“We’re excited to be in the tournament,” Goins said. “That’s been our goal all year.”

The Eagles, from Nine Mile Falls north of Spokane, play a loser-out game at 1 p.m. today against Cascade Christian, also at Ike.

1A boys: Spartans hold off Lakeside

February 26, 2011 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — It neither surprised nor disappointed Granger that Lakeside came into Ike Gym on Friday night ready to run.

Because that’s what the Spartans do.

And while the Eagles were highly capable in a full-court, up-tempo game and got stellar performances from several players, Granger got 31 points from Brandon Oswalt and a 66-61 victory in first-round Class 1A state tournament play.

Oswalt, a high-energy 5-foot-10 senior, scored 11 points in a frenzied fourth quarter that saw Lakeside cut a 10-point deficit to two before the Spartans iced the game with an 8-0 run.

Granger, ninth ranked and 17-7, advances to a Thursday quarterfinal at 5:30 p.m. in the SunDome against a yet-to-be-determined foe. Lakeside (17-10) meets King’s in a loser-out contest at 3 p.m. today at Ike.

“Oswalt had 31?” asked Spartans coach Miguel Bazaldua, looking incredulously at the gym’s electronic individual scoreboard. “I guess it was a quiet 31, if there can be such a thing. I’m at a loss for words.”

Not to mention breath.

Lakeside, from Nine Mile Falls near Spokane, got a monster game of 19 points and 17 rebounds from 6-5 senior Ryan Gunderson, 18 points from Conner Moffatt and 12 from Demetrius Watson.

Yet the Eagles turned the ball over 25 times against Granger’s intense, scrambling pressure and led only in the early minutes.

Down 49-39 early in the final period, Lakeside made it 56-54 on Jacob Erickson’s jumper with 2:07 to play.

But Matt James scored of an offensive rebound, and after a 30-second Spartans timeout, Johnny Pacheco got an inside bucket off a nice feed from Brandon Castro, who along with Andrew Reddout scored 13 points. Reddout, who missed some time with a nose bleed, also grabbed eight rebounds before fouling out with 2:47 left.

Following Pacheco’s hoop, Oswalt converted a three-point play off a sweet assist from Pacheco for a 62-54 Granger lead with 1:00 remaining.

Castro and Oswalt then converted two free throws each to close the Spartans scoring.

“We’re extremely happy to get out of here with a win,” Bazaldua said. “Lakeside’s a good club and they did some nice things against us. But we’re going on to the SunDome and we’re pretty pumped about it.”

2A boys: Greyhounds keep their cool

Grandview edges CWAC rival, stays alive in 2A tourney ||

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — When a season that started with 21 consecutive victories suddenly came to the brink Friday night, Grandview’s boys were conspicuously missing one thing.

Desperation.

It wasn’t in the hand of Daniel Nielsen, it wasn’t in the mind of Christian Schrank and it wasn’t — despite all signs that full-scale panic should ensue — anywhere to be seen in these Greyhounds.

Never mind that the 21-0 start had been followed by two straight losses in which a previously potent offense couldn’t crack 50 points, and never mind that the 0-2 slip put Grandview in a precarious loser-out game against rival Wapato, which had knocked off the Hounds in the CWAC district title game.

And, most of all, never mind that a 17-point lead against the Wolves had been carved down to 39-38 with just over four minutes left in Friday’s Class 2A state opener.

“We just had to keep believing in our game,” Nielsen said. “We’d been struggling but we stuck together and kept our cool.”

Nielsen’s cool was especially crucial as the senior marksman buried back-to-back 3-pointers after Wapato had pulled within a point, sending the Greyhounds to a hard-fought 53-51 victory at Central Washington University’s Nicholson Pavilion.

After Nielsen’s clutch shots, which came from opposite sides of the arc, Schrank nailed another 3-pointer to spark the offense with nine quick points on three trips down the court.

“Typical Grandview-Wapato game — 32 minutes all out,” said a tired and relieved Grandview coach Roy Garcia. “Our core five seniors were determined. They got the lead and didn’t let it go.”

The sharp-shooting Greyhounds charged out of the gate, hitting five triples in the first quarter and building a 29-12 lead in the second period. But then Grandview couldn’t buy a basket, missing 11 straight shots from their favorite 3-point distance and allowing Wapato back in the game.

The Wolves gave Grandview a dose of its own medicine, canning five of their nine 3-pointers in the fourth quarter — two each by Efrain Reynoso and Shawn Craig.

Even when the big shots by Nielsen and Schrank put Grandview back up 48-38 with 2:20 to go, Wapato wouldn’t concede. An 11-2 late rush, fueled by Craig’s two treys, got the Wolves back within 50-49 with 23 seconds left.

Nielsen then stepped up again, coolly making two free throws with 20.3 seconds left.

Schrank, Nielsen and Tony Vela scored 14, 13 and 12 points, respectively, and never left the floor, playing all 32 minutes. It was an effort much like last year at state when Grandview clinched a trophy by eliminating Wapato 64-63.

“It always seems to come down to us and Wapato,” said Schrank, who also grabbed 10 rebounds. “They are so tough, and this was a huge game for both of us.

“It was our goal to go undefeated, but you can’t have everything go your way,” he added. “We had to come back together as a team after those losses. Now we just have to keep winning.”

Grandview (22-2) will return to CWU today for another loser-out game — tipoff at 3 p.m. — against Clarkston. A win would send the Greyhounds to the state quarterfinals in Yakima next week.

“It’s been a roller-coaster for us the last couple weeks,” Nielsen said. “The first quarter was big for us, hitting shots and finally getting some offense. Then we struggled a little but got it back. We hung in there and got it done.”

CWAC player of the year Jacoby Howe led Wapato with 17 points followed by Craig (13) and Reynoso (12). Clifton Smiscon hauled down 10 rebounds for the Wolves, who finished the season at 19-6 with three of the losses to Grandview.
