Column: Letter of thanks to the Davis Pirates

February 25, 2011 by

Dear Davis Pirates,

This needs to be said publicly by someone, so it might as well be me.

All of you, from head coach Eli Juarez and his staff through your entire roster and support group, should be congratulated for your CBBN 4A league and district championships.

You should also be thanked for earning them in a manner that exemplifies what high school team sports should be about, and also by me, personally, since I’ve been lucky enough to see some of your best stuff.

From David Trimble, one of the most talented and least selfish players I’ve seen in 36-plus years of covering prep hoops; to Jackson Marquis, the man of many shoes; to Cooper Kupp, last year’s district tournament hero; you have played hard, clean and with obvious respect for the game, your opponents and yourselves.

Officials, too.

A classic case in point was last Friday night’s district championship game against Richland.

The Bombers came out clearly intent on not only avenging two regular-season losses to you, but also last year’s winner-to-state, loser-out titanic in which Kupp emerged the buzzer-beating luminary. You immediately matched their energy, though, and persisted with your game plan in the face of repeated Richland runs.

Which wasn’t easy, because the Bombers on that evening were a good team playing well. They defended, they rebounded, they shot well and did everything needed to beat most opponents in most situations on most nights.

But not you guys. Not on this night.

You stuck with the task at hand, and were not distracted by the fact that none of you shot a free throw until 6:40 was gone in the third quarter — and those, cashed by Ray Navarro — resulted from a delay-of-game technical against Richland.

And please, readers, do not misconstrue this as a criticism of the officials. I mention it simply to illustrate the game’s evolution, and while there were instances in which Davis players felt they didn’t get calls when fouled, they responded only with brief expressions of frustration, then moved on. I don’t recall a word being said.

It was then fitting, Pirates, that you iced the game by making six of eight foul shots in the final 1:52, after which you celebrated your school’s first district title since 2003.

Among the best things about covering a Davis game is seeing players from Pirates teams past, such as Nico Sandoval, Humberto Perez and Jeremy Mangum. They always say hello and offer handshakes and smiles.

And all of you are doing them proud.

Davis, of course, has a long and rich basketball tradition. The best high school team I’ve ever seen, in fact, was the 1964-65 Pirate squad that went unbeaten en route to a state championship.

That team then sent Ted Wierman and Lenny Allen to Washington State, where they became three-year starters (college freshmen couldn’t play on the varsity back then) on some of Marv Harshman’s best teams.

Another Pirate, Del Carmichael, might well have joined them had he not chosen to play football at WSU, where he became a two-year letterman.

I was a seventh grader at Tieton Junior High back then, and didn’t see that team often. But I’ll never forget its combination of size, depth, talent and toughness.

You’re not as good as they were, of course, but that’s not the issue here.

Because you’ve played hard, played well, and have played the way any parent ought to hope his or her children would play, you should feel very good about yourselves regardless of where this season takes you.

And another thing. Some of your teachers have no doubt said there are no such things as dumb questions, but that’s not true. I should know, since I’ve asked a lot of them.

Yet those of you I’ve been lucky enough to speak with have responded with thoughtful and candid answers. Mr. Marquis even told me how I could get shoes like his.

So for that and many other pleasantries this season, Pirates, to all of you, thank you.

Sincerely,

Roger Underwood

Ellensburg’s Mike Probasco, who earned his second $10 gift card to The Second Street Grill in downtown Yakima, was last week’s winner of the Grill the Readers trivia competition on sportsyakima.com.

Probasco correctly answered gymnastics as the sport besides wrestling or swimming for which the WIAA hosted state championships for last week.

This week’s question: In what year did the SunDome host its first state basketball tournament?

Block party for CWU, Sprinker

February 25, 2011 by

Senior sets career record for blocked shots ||

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — In most cases, a team playing defense does not want an opposing player to get near the rim.

Central Washington’s Wildcats, on the other hand, don’t mind it. Their style even encourages, to a degree, penetration of the paint.

And one of the main reasons is Chris Sprinker.

“A lot of our offense comes from our defense,” he said. “And a lot of our transition stuff comes from blocked shots.”

As he spoke Thursday night, the 6-foot-9 senior was holding the game ball from Central’s 71-57 regular-season-ending defeat of Western Oregon, a triumph punctuated by Sprinker’s establishment of a school record for blocks as part of senior night in Nicholson Pavilion.

His four swats pushed him past the 18-year-old mark of Otto Pijpker. The new record is 131, and counting.

Sprinker also scored 11 points to back the 22 of Jamar Berry while reserves Jody Johnson and Coby Gibler added 12 each.

The victory left the GNAC regular-season champion and 11th-ranked Wildcats 16-2 in the conference and 23-3 overall. Having won for the 13th time in their last 15 games to claim the program’s first GNAC basketball crown, Central will host Montana State Billings in a first-round conference tournament game at 7 p.m. Monday.

As the eight-team tourney’s top seed, Central will host throughout the event, which continues Wednesday and concludes next Friday night.

If the Wildcats claim that title, they will likely be retain their No. 1 West Regional ranking and thus host the eight-team regional tournament March 12-15.

“I knew we’d be good,” Sprinker said, “but I didn’t expect this. We’ve had a lot of guys play great and a lot of things come together.”

Including many facets of their play displayed against the Wolves (8-10, 13-15).

Central led throughout, with Berry scoring 17 points en route to a 38-27 halfitme lead. Though Western Oregon got within six on several occasions in the second half, the Wildcats kept their distance mostly on the strength of pressuring, trapping man-to-man defense that takes more risks than it would otherwise were not Sprinker, Gibler (also 6-9) and Roby Clyde (6-5) lurking near the glass.

The Wolves, with guard Blair Wheedon scoring a game-high 24 points, were hoping to reduce their halftime deficit to single digits, in fact, when Sprinker soared from the baseline for his school-record-breaking block, with the ball sailing into a group of friends that included his mother.

“That was sweet,” he said. “And the thing I really feel good about is I got the record in only three years here.”

Berry gave the Wildcats a scare when he slipped to the floor after trying to catch a long pass, then limped away and didn’t return.

“I just hyperextended it (his left knee) a little,” he said, “and I’ll take care of it. I’ll be fine.”

Said Greg Sparling, who’s in his 16th season as CWU’s head coach, “It’s a credit to these guys. With the schedule we’ve played, and which is helping us so much right now in the regional rankings, to go 23-3 is very, very special. This is a group that just finds a way to win.”

Ex-Western coach Ross new LB coach at UNLV

February 24, 2011 by

Robin Ross, the football coach who had the rug so unceremoniously pulled from beneath him by Western Washington following the 2008 season, has been named linebackers coach at UNLV.
Prior to his hiring by Rebels coach Bobby Hauck, the former Montana head man, Ross had been tight ends coach the past two seasons at Oregon State.
He had been Western’s head coach for three seasons, succeeding Rob Smith, before the university’s administration abruptly dropped football.

Local: YVCC wrestlers set for nationals

February 23, 2011 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — Eight Yakima Valley wrestlers are scheduled to compete in the National Junior College Athletic Association wrestling tournament Friday and Saturday at the Spokane Convention Center.

The Yaks will be among 251 wrestlers representing 36 community colleges. Action begins at 9:30 a.m. Friday and concludes with finals at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Six YVCC wrestlers qualified by finishing in the top five in their respective weight classes during regional competition earlier this month at Southwestern Oregon Community College in Coos Bay, Ore.

They are Gustavo Lopez, a redshirt sophomore from Wapato at 125 pounds; Brian Bitney, a redshirt freshman from Puyallup (133); Sean Baker, a redshirt freshman from Hood River, Ore. (157); Dillon Ford, a freshman from Montesano (165); Ryan Campbell, a freshman from Montesano (174); and Teagan Franco, a freshman from Spanaway (184).

Jack Calvert, a 149-pound sophomore from Othello, and Tito Gonzales, a 197-pound freshman from Yakima, made the tourney as wild cards.

Franco was YVCC’s most successful regional wrestler, finishing second in his weight class.

Defending team champions in Spokane will be Harper College of Illinois and Iowa Central Community College. Harper, though competing in the non-scholarship division, totaled 137 points last year to Division I Iowa Central’s 116.

Among the eight schools bringing the maximum number of 10 wrestlers are NWAACC members Clackamas and Highline. Clackamas returns four All-Americans, most of any school in the tournament.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Central still No. 1 in the West

Despite a loss last week at archrival Western Washington, Central Washington maintained its No. 1 ranking in the NCAA Division II West Region poll released Wednesday.

The Wildcats, who clinched the GNAC championship Saturday night with a win at Simon Fraser, topped the regional poll for the third consecutive week. And if they stay there through the GNAC Tournament, Central will host the West Regional Tournament set for March 12-15.

Having won the regular-season conference title, CWU (15-2 GNAC, 22-3 overall) will host throughout the GNAC tourney, with games scheduled for Monday, Wednesday and March 4.

Central, ranked 11th nationally, also won Tuesday night, though the regional rankings were based on games played through Sunday.

Humboldt State leapfrogged Cal State Dominguez Hills to No. 2 in the poll, with those California Collegiate Athletic Association teams scheduled to meet tonight at Humboldt.

Other GNAC teams in the regional poll are Alaska Anchorage, seventh; Seattle Pacific, eighth; and Western Washington, 10th.

The GNAC and CCAA have postseason tournaments. Champions of those events, along with the PacWest regular-season winner, receive automatic bids to the eight-team regional tournament. The highest-ranked remaining teams in the final regional poll will comprise the rest of the field.

• The box score from Tuesday’s Central Washington-Saint Martin’s game is in Scoreboard on Page 2B.
