Track and Field: Ike takes Holder titles

March 27, 2011 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — Showing off their depth during a long, rainy day at Zaepfel Stadium, Eisenhower’s boys and girls swept the team titles in the 37th annual Don Holder Relays.

The Cadets won only two events — Ewieona Williams in the shot put and the girls 4×100 relay — but they amassed nearly 90 points in both meets to easily best the 21-team field. Williams set a big personal best in the shot, reaching 38 feet, 1 1/4 inches, and placed fourth in the discus.

Eisenhower's Timothy Cummings led Nathan Hale's Ethan Davis in the beginning of the steeplechase race but fell part way through the race to take second place at the 37th annual Don Holder Relays at Eisenhower High School on Saturday, March 26, 2011. (Sara Gettys/Yakima Herald-Republic)

Two west siders were especially impressive. Glacier Peak’s Amy-Eloise Neale, who won the Sunfair Invitational cross country race here last fall, set a meet record in the 3,200 of 10:26.23 and anchored the winning distance medley with a 4:54 leg for 1,600. Bellarmine junior Michael Rector won the 100 (10.96) and long jump (21-10 1/2) and placed second in the 400.

• In the Ray Cross Invitational in Ephrata, Riverside Christian’s Derek Byrne won two events (javelin, long jump) and was second in the 110 hurdles to help the Crusaders finish fourth.

In the girls meet, Wapato’s Leticia Campos swept the hurdles to help the Wolves finish fifth, Toppenish’s Angie Zuniga swept the 100 and 200, and Riverside Christian’s Bethany Imperial won the long jump and was second in the triple jump.

Miles are adding up for Yakima River Canyon Marathon runners

March 25, 2011 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — I got a call a couple of days ago from a fellow wanting to let me in on something he found remarkable: A friend of his, a 68-year-old dentist from Omaha, Neb., named Mike Fleming, would be running in his 100th marathon in next Saturday’s Yakima River Canyon Marathon.

To anybody outside of the esoteric community of mega-marathoners, yes, that’s a remarkable feat. We otherwise-inclined, “normal” folks cringe at the wear and tear even one journey over the 26.2 miles of a marathon — roughly 50,000 strides — must wreak upon our feet, our knees, our joints and our will. Go through that abuse 100 times? Please. The mere thought makes us reach for the ibuprofen.

But compared to some of the people who will run alongside him in next Saturday’s 11th annual Canyon marathon, Michael Fleming will be a veritable piker. Only 100 marathons? Please.

No fewer than 50 runners in the Canyon field have run more 26-milers than that. More than a third of those have run 200. Mel Preedy, 77, of Ravensdale, Wash., and Frank Bartocci, 63, of Rochester, Minn., will each be running his 400th marathon.

And if that isn’t enough to boggle the mind, get this: Bob Dolphin, Canyon Marathon co-director along with his wife, Lenore, has already planned out his marathon schedule to ensure that when he runs the 2013 YRCM, it will be his marathon No. 500. He’s currently at 482 and (most definitely) counting.

Five hundred marathons. That’s 13,100 miles of running, and that’s only counting the races themselves. Most marathoners train for months for a marathon — or, in the case of most of these mega-marathoners who complete a dozen or more a year, they never really stop training.

One of next Saturday’s entrants is Ron Fowler, 63, of Rochester, Wash., who has run at least a mile — and usually a lot further — every day for more than 28 years. For more than 10,000 consecutive days, rain or shine, whether suffering through a cold or hampered by sore knees, he has laced up his running shoes and hit the road. Not surprisingly, he has run each of the previous 10 Yakima marathons — as have 24 other entrants in next Saturday’s race.

David Jones, a 65-year-old from Seattle, actually had a longer daily running streak than Fowler until last year, having begun his daily running regimen a month before Fowler did. But Jones’ 27-years-plus streak was ended by health issues right after the 2010 Canyon race, Jones’ 200th marathon. This Saturday he’ll be back for No. 201; this time, because of those health issues, he’ll be walking, not running.

There are numerous reasons the Canyon marathon has become a popular destination for so many marathoners:

• The course is beautiful and is a “point-to-point” route; you never have to retrace your steps or see the same scenery.

• The Dolphins are extremely well-known in the marathoning community, directing not only the YRCM but also overseeing the 100 Marathon Club North America. They attend so many marathons around the country — let’s face it, there can’t possibly be too many races Bob has missed — that they have countless opportunities to spread the word about their scenic event.

• The Marathon Maniacs, a loose-knit group of distance-running, um, shall we say, enthusiasts began just over the Cascades in the Seattle/Tacoma area. Club members invariably turn out in force at the Yakima race, more of them every year as new Maniacs hear about it from older club members. One of those Maniacs? Well, Bob Dolphin himself.

And you don’t just join the Maniacs; you have to earn the right. Even to qualify at the, er, easiest level (Bronze), you must have run two marathons within 16 days of one another, or three marathons within 90 days.

The levels move up — or down, depending on your point of view — through different levels of, well, sanity. There’s the Iridium Level (four marathons in 23 days, or 19 to 25 within a year), the Ruthenium Level (three marathons in three days, four within nine days, or 26 to 30 within a year) and on up to the Titanium Level (one of the qualifications: 52 marathons within a year).

Mike Fleming, that dentist from Omaha, isn’t officially a Maniac but he could be; he has run two marathons a week apart (which would make him a Bronze member), and 13 within a year (which would earn him Gold status).

This Saturday, when he completes his second Canyon marathon (he also ran here in 2002), he will officially join 100 Marathon Club.

“That’s the plan, anyway,” Fleming said on Friday. “I have to finish it, first.”

Real marathoners always do.

Canyon Rim ultra already filled up

March 25, 2011 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — Well, here’s another example that distance runners just never get enough of doing what they love: running … and running … and running … and running …

Next weekend will be the 11th annual Yakima River Canyon Marathon, with more than 500 endurance athletes coming into town from all over this country (and, usually, a few others as well). Many YRCM entrants typically ask race co-director Lenore Dolphin if there are other marathon in the region a day or two before or after the race, so they can double their Pacific Northwest marathon pleasure in the same trip.

To take advantage of the number of those mega-marathoners looking for another long run, James Varner, a Winthrop-based director of numerous “ultra” trail runs, contacted Lenore and Bob Dolphin months ago to see if they would mind his scheduling a trail ultra-marathon on the Yakima Rim, overlooking the canyon, for the day after the canyon marathon. Knowing their running clientele would be thrilled at another opportunity, they told Varner to go for it.

He did, and announced the Yakima Rim Skyline 50-K (roughly 31 miles) and 25-K runs for next Sunday, April 3.

This past Monday, Varner announced that the 150 berths in his runs were already filled up — many of them by people who will have run the marathon the day before. There had already been a few cancellations, but as spaces open up, they’re almost certain to be snapped up by others willing to pound out the miles.

OK, you take 26.2 miles, you add 31 miles, lessee, that makes … well, it makes me tired. Even thinking about it.

I think I’ll go take a nap.
