Broncos break into gallop under new coach Rice
March 25, 2011 by Roger Underwood
It might only have been the CBI, or College Basketball Invitation, but by Boise State’s modest basketball standards it was not only worth playing in but celebrating.
The Broncos’ 79-71 semifinal loss at Oregon on Wednesday night left them at 22-13, their win total under first-year coach Leon Rice the fifth-highest in school history. They were also seven more than the previous season, marking the fifth-best turnaround in BSU history.
And there were more historical nuggets offered by the university’s sports information department regarding Rice, the one-time Yakima Valley assistant, co-head coach and solo head coach.
Of the 54 first-year coaches in the nation this season, only 13 won 20 games or more. Of those 13, just five were in their first season as a Division I head coach.
And of those five, only Rice inherited a team that had a losing record in 2009-10.
Cheers, Leon!

Pooling their talents

Valley foursome headed to YMCA Nationals ||
YAKIMA, Wash. — They attend four different high schools, swim in a wide variety races for those teams and compete in three different classifications during the prep season in the fall.
But through the long months of winter, their allegiance is to each other.
Eisenhower’s Emilie Pleger, West Valley’s Keely Hausken, Sunnyside’s Toni Castillo and Riverside Christian’s Bethany Imperial — rivals in the prep waters — have been hard at work for the Yakima YMCA Swim Team in preparation for the National YMCA Short Course Championships in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on April 5-9.

From left, Keely Hausken, Emilie Pleger, Bethany Imperial and Toni Castillo make up the Yakima YMCA Swim Team’s 200-meter medley and freestyle relay teams which are going to the YMCA national swim meet in Florida April 5-9. (Gordon King/Yakima Herald-Republic)
And there’s no messing around. With only 50 yards each, it’s a flat-out sprint.
Here’s the sequence with their prep credentials:
• Backstroke: The leadoff goes to Hausken, who placed fourth in the 3A state meet and led the Valley by over three seconds.
• Breaststroke: Pleger is the Valley’s all-time ace, having placed second in the 4A state meet with an All-American 100 time.
• Butterfly: Castillo could do any leg in the relay, but the fly is where she placed eighth in the 3A state meet last fall.
• Freestyle: Imperial, who competes for Wapato, closes with the speed that earned her two top-five finishes in the 2A state 50 free.
The foursome has also qualified in the 200 free relay and will go with a sequence of Imperial, Castillo, Hausken and Pleger.
With both relay distances set at 200, there’s little margin for error with neither requiring even two minutes. The free relay has clocked 1:41.13 and the medley hit 1:52.57.
“Both relays are just a complete sprint but we’re better suited for sprints,” said YYST coach Roger Coburn. “We’ve got very good speed with this group and they work hard on exchanges and reaction times. Those things are important because a few tenths of a second can separate 20 places.”
It is indeed a team built for speed with all four, in one prep season or another, having competed at state in the 50 free. Pleger has been pace-setter with Valley-best times of 24.74 in each of the last two years.
Pleger, who has been with the YMCA team since she was 9, has a busy schedule in the three-day Nationals in Florida. In addition to the two relays, she will compete in the 50 free, 100 breast and 200 breast.
The medley, fortunately, will be contested on the first day.
“Having everybody hit their best swims on the same day is hard but that’s what we’re hoping for,” Coburn said. “The goal is always to make one of the three finals, and that means being in the top 24 out of around 50-plus teams.”
To prepare for the peak of the short-course season and the highlight of the YMCA schedule, the four girls have to be serious early-risers. They meet from 5 a.m. to 7 each day so they can get their training in before a full day of high school.
The last two months have been intense, building up to a taper period that should have them ready for their best at Nationals.
“They’ve been tired and sore a lot, but you need that for the taper to work,” Coburn said. “It’s like winding up a tight spring. Once we hit the taper, we let the spring go.”

SKIING
Mahres to receive Hall honor
Olympic-medal winning skiers Phil and Steve Mahre have been selected as the International Ski Hall of Fame’s 2011 Legends of Honor.
The twin brothers from Yakima will be inducted Saturday as part of the Ski Classic event in Vail, Colo.
“Anyone that was into ski racing in this country knew about Phil and Steve,” Michael Imhof, vice president of sales and operations for the Vail Valley Foundation, said in a release announcing the honor. “They proved to the world that Americans did indeed belong among the elite of the ski racing community, not just at big events, but week in and week out on the World Cup circuit.”
A three-time Olympian, Phil Mahre won three medals, including a gold in the slalom at the 1984 games in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. He also won three medals in the World Championships, including one gold. During a nine-year career, Phil Mahre won the overall World Cup title in three consecutive years (1981, ’82, ’83), and recorded 27 victories.
Steve Mahre also competed in three Olympics, winning the silver medal behind his brother in the ’84 slalom. He also earned one gold in the World Championships, and had nine victories during his nine-year World Cup career.

Local college hoops: Some good, some not so much
March 24, 2011 by Roger Underwood
Thoughts on the recently-completed local college basketball seasons:
Major kudos, first and foremost, to Yakima Valley’s women on their NWAACC championship, especially since it came only eight days after the Yaks had lost teammate Hannah Cordova in a car accident.
The Yaks clearly played in Cordova’s image — working hard and adhering both mentally and emotionally to the task at hand. And their lone senior, Mariah Roe, was rock solid even if she didn’t light up the scoreboard.
YVCC’s men were also deserving of commendation, overcoming numerous discipline issues and playing the final three games of the NWAACC Tournament with only eight players to finish fifth.
Meaning, among other things, that a team can never have too many Willie Blodgetts, Ryan Dorniks, Terrell Evans or Evan Berndts.
For Central Washington’s men, the season’s end came earlier and in a different fashion than they’d expected.
The Wildcats were not pleased with the officials, who called the game tighter than they were accustomed to. But also, Seattle Pacific used its preparation time well in anticipation of CWU’s pressing, trapping defense, and executed its game plan to near perfection, moving the ball quickly away from double teams and into the hands of wide open shooters.
Of course, game plans always look better when a team shoots it like the Falcons did — they made 9 of 18 3-pointers, some from well beyond the arc.
Central actually forced more turnovers in its loss to SPU (21) than it did during 63-53 suffocation of the Falcons in Ellensburg on Feb. 9 (18). And freshman point guard David Downs had the same number — seven — in each game.
But after hitting only 1 of 3 shots from distance in the first game, Downs made 5 of 7 in the second. And his brother, senior shooting guard Jeff Downs, made 2 of 5 long balls and was 10 of 11 from the foul line.
The Bellevue Christian backcourt — their father, Michael Downs, coached them in high school and is a former SPU standout — combined for 15 points in the aforementioned loss at Central. They scored 42 in the victory.
The Wildcats, meanwhile, were unable to develop an offensive rhythm. Unable to get to the rim or establish big men inside against Seattle Pacific’s 2-3 zone, they made only 7 of 31 long balls.
Contrary to some observations, Central wasn’t flat. Nor did the Wildcats choke.
They simply didn’t make enough shots to keep pace with a loose, underdog SPU team that did.
Regarding the sad state of CWU women’s hoops, it’s unfortunate when someone loses his or her job, as coach Jeff Whitney did earlier this month.
And it’s true the Wildcats are not fully funded, as several of their GNAC opponents are.
But when a program produces only 10 conference wins in three years, goes 2-16 in its most recent season, doesn’t win a single GNAC game on the road and provides a 1-24 Alaska Fairbanks team its only victory, time had clearly come for a change.
UAF, by the way, sustained its 17 conference defeats by more than 22 points a game.
