Local report: CBC sweeps Yaks

April 28, 2011 by

PASCO, Wash. — Yakima Valley’s baseball winning streak has ended, and in a big way.

The Yaks, who’d won all 14 games since losing the second game of a March 30 doubleheader to Columbia Basin, dropped two to the Hawks on Wednesday, 10-3 and 4-2 on CBC’s field.

The sweep reduced YVCC’s East Region lead over Columbia Basin to one game.

CBC (14-4 region, 24-10 overall) came out scoring against Yakima Valley (15-3, 21-6), which was ranked second in the most recent NWAACC poll released Monday.

The Hawks followed a three-run first inning by scoring seven in the second. That was more than enough for starting pitcher Kody Young, who scattered six hits and struck out five through 8 2/3 innings.

Brian King had three of YVCC’s hits — two singles and a double — while Trevor Dallman was 2 for 4 and had two RBI.

Columbia Basin’s Cole McPherson hit a two-run homer in the second inning of the second game, and the Hawks added two more runs in the fourth.

Roeman Fields and Tyler Berman had two hits apiece for Yakima Valley, which managed only single runs in the third and seventh.

Game 1

Yakima Valley 000 100 002 — 3 6 2
Columbia Basin 000 370 00x — 10 9 2

Columbia Basin 020 200 00x — 4 8 0
Welton, Druffel (6) and Kerns; Acker, Garza (6), Minnich (8) and McPherson.
YVCC highlights: Roeman Fields (YVCC) 2-5, run; Tyler Berman (YVCC) 2-2, 2 bb, RBI.

Central-UPS postponed

TACOMA, Wash. — Central Washington’s non-league baseball game with Puget Sound was postponed Wednesday due to a forecast of inclement weather.

The Wildcats (11-27) are scheduled to meet UPS (16-15) at 4 p.m. today.

COLLEGE FASTPITCH

Hadenfeld lauded, CWU moves up

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Lauren Hadenfeld was named NCAA Division II national pitcher of the week Wednesday and Central Washington moved up two spots to eighth in this week’s West Region poll.

Hadenfeld, a senior with an 18-6 record and 2.01 earned run average, was honored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

She has won her last 11 decisions and is 10-0 with a 1.32 ERA during CWU’s 15-game winning streak.

The Wildcats (19-5 GNAC, 25-11 overall) swept a doubleheader last week at Western Washington and hold a two-game conference lead over the Vikings, who were fourth in this week’s poll.

Central can secure its second straight D-II playoff berth by successfully defending its GNAC championship. The Wildcats visit Montana State Billings today for a conference doubleheader.

Donaldson still living large

April 27, 2011 by

Ex-Sonic remains a big figure — just not on the hardwood ||

YAKIMA, Wash. — During the early 1980s, James Donaldson was a big part of the Seattle SuperSonics.

Literally, a big part.

“My goodness,” a young woman said Tuesday while shaking Donaldson’s hand at a YMCA book signing and autograph session, “look how big your hand is compared to mine.”

“Well,” Donaldson said, smiling, “big hands go with being a big person.”

“How tall are you?” she asked.

To which Donaldson answered for the umpteen thousandth time, no doubt, “I am 7-2.” Not to mention 275 pounds.

Back in the day, when Donaldson was still learning the game, his stature was not lost on more established teammates, either. During the 1981-82 season, for example, whenever Donaldson would get the ball near the basket, Gus Williams would howl from the Seattle bench, “He’s yours, big fella.”

Shayla Hamilton, 11, left, and her grandmother, Grace Smith, right, snap photos of former WSU basketball player, Seattle SuperSonic and NBA All-Star James Donaldson while Lucy Valderhaug waits for a her book to be signed as Donaldson meets fans and signs copies of his new book in front of Inklings bookstores on Tuesday, April 26, 2011. (Sara Gettys/Yakima Herald-Republic)

Tuesday, reminded of those occasions, Donaldson sat back in his chair and smiled. “Yeah,” he said, “Gus, Fred Brown, J.J. (John Johnson). They were guys who helped me learn, making sure I arrived early and stayed late. Fun times.”

The ’80s, after all, were good to the NBA and vice versa. ESPN and the proliferation of cable TV beamed an increasingly competitive and glamorous game to millions.

Of course, the arrival of Larry Bird and Magic Johnson and the captivating Celtics-Lakers rivalry helped. So did David Stern — for awhile, at least.

The Sonics, meanwhile, were in a state of decline, their skids greased by ill-advised personnel moves lowlighted by draft choices such as Danny Vranes and Jon Sundvold.

In 1979, weeks after winning its only NBA championship, Seattle did itself no favors by using the sixth and seventh picks on James Bailey and Vinnie Johnson, respectively. But the Sonics did find a proverbial diamond in the rough in Donaldson, drafted in the fourth round (73rd overall choice) from Washington State.

Though clearly a project — Donaldson played his first professional season in Italy — he returned to become a popular and productive Sonic and, with Dallas in 1988, he was an All-Star.

The emerging league needed people like Donaldson. He was hard-working, polite and completely void of the sense of entitlement so many players had, even then.

And now Donaldson is back, giving back.

In addition to writing his book, appropriately entitled, “Standing above the Crowd,” Donaldson has served as a mentor to many, giving motivational speeches and spending time with youth as he’d done earlier Tuesday to a sixth-grade PE class at Washington Middle School.

His book is meant to inspire readers to more closely approach their potential through desire, dedication and discipline, using his own personal triumphs as examples.

He owns The Donaldson Clinic, a physical therapy facility in Mill Creek, and ran for mayor of Seattle in 2009.

Speaking of politics, Donaldson was asked the state of Seattle’s climate regarding another NBA team.

“There’s nothing new,” he said. “People are still talking and hoping, but right now there’s nothing on the radar screen. I still think it’s a five-year outlook to do everything that’s necessary, including getting an arena.”

The 53-year-old Donaldson, meanwhile, said he stays in touch with several of his old teammates, including Brown and Johnson, and that former coach Lenny Wilkens helped with portions of his book.

“Lenny had a lot of stories,” Donaldson said. “There were some really neat things he talked about, but some really sad stories, too, about some of the social issues he faced as a young player.”

None of which dulled Donaldson’s keen sense of humor, however.

When it was mentioned that he was born in Heacham, England, Donaldson said,

“I was 2 when we left, so I don’t remember anything about living there. I am jazzed about the wedding, though.”

In the 1980s, the NBA needed people like James Donaldson.

It still does.

East Valley hands Selah first loss of the season by coming back late

April 27, 2011 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — For a full week, East Valley’s baseball team felt the heavy burden of what one bad day can do to an otherwise great season.

But on Tuesday, the Red Devils got that day back and did so in the ideal way.

By battling for it.

Erasing a three-run deficit in the seventh inning and scratching out a decisive run during a highly volatile eighth, East Valley outlasted previously unbeaten Selah for an 8-7 CWAC victory at Loftus Field.

Splitting a league series that started with Selah’s 14-4 five-inning humbling on April 19, the two CWAC rivals are tied atop the standings at 15-1 with final doubleheaders on Saturday.

“For us it was about redemption and playing better in a big game,” said senior catcher Cody Cruse. “We were so disappointed with how we played Selah the first time — it was just bad. So all week we said, ‘No messing around, let’s show we can play better.’ It’s nice to give them their first loss.”

Cruse, who recently missed games with a knee injury, sure did his part, going 3 for 4 with a crucial two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh that tied the game at 7-7.

“That was so clutch, and it couldn’t have happened to a better kid,” said EV coach Jesse Benedetti. “He’s been battling an injury, he’s missed some games and he’s been working on getting his timing back. That was great to see.”

In the eighth, after Selah left the go-ahead run at third, EV’s Tony Saiz came through with the game-winner, pulling a ball just inside first base to score Kris Janis from second with one out. Saiz, a sophomore outfielder, came to the plate 0 for 4.

“Tony stayed on the pitch and did a nice job,” Benedetti noted. “Later in the game our at-bats were more competitive and we worked the counts more. Through it all, we kept our composure and that’s something we’ve talked a lot about.”

Composure got stressed on both sides.

Selah picked up two unearned runs in the top of the seventh, stretching its lead to 7-4 when East Valley committed its two errors in the game.

But in the eighth it was Selah’s turn to get rattled. Jonathan Janis’ leadoff liner to left field appeared to be caught by a diving Kurt Lindemann, but after the two umpires conferred it was ruled that he juggled and dropped it. Shortstop Alex Fickes, who was 3 for 4 with three doubles, was later ejected while coach Mike Archer argued with the umpires.

Jonathan Janis was erased on a fielder’s choice by Kris Janis, who reached second when Hunter Hanson was hit by a pitch. That set up Saiz’s walk-off hit.

“The kids didn’t let down and just kept battling,” said Benedetti, who got a pair of RBI doubles from Cody Nickoloff. “We got a few breaks, hit some balls hard toward the end and just played hard.”

The Vikings are adjusting their infield following the loss of senior shortstop Trent Douglass, who suffered a broken ankle last week.

“As much as you don’t want that changing too much, it obviously does,” Archer said. “But that’s part of the game and we just have to toughen up and move on.”

Both second-ranked Selah (17-1) and No. 6 East Valley (15-3) have clinched the CWAC’s top two spots and first-round byes in the district tournament.

The Vikings close Saturday at home with a doubleheader against Quincy while East Valley travels to third-place Othello.
