Tennis pros right at home

Welts bring world of experience to new jobs at Yakima Tennis Club ||
YAKIMA, Wash. — Having traveled the world on the pro circuit, and taught at some of the largest tennis clubs in some of the largest cities in this country, Yakima seems slightly out of place.
Yet for Stephen and Jana Welt, this little spot in Central Washington feels exactly like the right place at the right time in their lives.

That moment arrived earlier this year courtesy of the Yakima Tennis Club, when Stephen was named the club’s general manager and director of tennis, with Jana joining the teaching staff.
“My wife and I had a dream to run or own a tennis club together,” said Stephen, 44, who met Jana in the late 1990s when he was teaching at the Evert Tennis Academy in Florida and she was playing on the Women’s Tennis Association tour.
“With the economy today, owning a club would be tough,” he continued, “so this is about as close as we can get.”
More importantly, both firmly believe that Yakima will be a good place to raise daughters Hannah, who will be 6 next month, and Abigail, who turned 3 last month.
“The Northwest was always at the top of my list, and Yakima is the first opportunity in a long time that fit the majority of our wishes for our family,” said Jana, 36, who was born in the Czech Republic but grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia, and became familiar with the region traveling to junior tennis events.
“It’s always a tough decision … to uproot to the unknown,” she continued. “As far as what was best for us, we felt this was the right move. So far, we haven’t regretted it.”
“When you have a wife and two daughters, family needs come first, and we heard from a lot of people that this was a great place to raise a family,” said Stephen, who was born and raised in London. “We wouldn’t have moved from where we were … if we didn’t think this was the best move for our family.”
So, after five years as director of tennis at the exclusive Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif., Stephen and family left the Palm Springs-area community for the “Palm Springs of Washington,” a place they had some familiarity with.

“When we were here two years ago, it seemed like exactly the place we wanted to be,” said Jana, adding that the Yakima Tennis Club reminded both of them of the type of tennis facility they grew up around — not the large “corporate clubs” they later worked for.
“We were never native Southern Californians and it wore on us,” Jana said of the Mission Hills stop. “This is refreshing coming out of a corporate club.
“It’s nice being in a smaller community and to have an enthusiastic tennis community to help back you up.”
It’s also an opportunity for the two to work side-by-side passing on their knowledge and passion for the sport.
“We complement each other,” Jana said. “He has more of a technical aspect (to his teaching) and I have that competitive side. One of my goals is to ultimately work with a wider variety of players, but it’s nice that each of us has our own strengths.”
They plan to utilize those strengths to carry on the rich tennis tradition at the Yakima Tennis Club, Stephen said.
“There’s a big history behind this club,” he said. “They’ve certainly had a lot of good coaches here in the past, and I want to carry on that tradition.”
Particularly working in tandem with a membership that “respects” their efforts, Jana said.
“It’s great that we have something we can work on together,” she said. “It’s a great advantage, especially here because it’s a family place.”
Welts take the long way to Yakima
April 24, 2011 by Dave Thomas
YAKIMA, Wash. — Downsizing to Yakima is quite a change for Stephen and Jana Welt, who, thanks to tennis, have experienced a large portion of this planet, first while growing up and then through their respective careers.
Stephen was born in London with tennis a big part of his upbringing. His parents were from South Africa, where his mother was a junior tennis champion. He also has a sister who played college tennis in the United States.
Welt grew up looking out on the Cumberland Lawn Tennis Club, where he could watch top players like Bjorn Borg, Vitas Gerulaitis and Mats Wilander use the club’s grass courts to prepare for Wimbledon.
Knowing a playing career wasn’t in his future, Welt started teaching in his late teens as he worked toward a degree in business administration.
Teaching tennis not only brought opportunities, such as working with the Israeli tennis team, it set the stage for him to meet Jana.
After his time in Israel, he joined his parents in Florida in the mid-1990s, where they had moved, and landed a job at the Evert Tennis Academy, run by the Evert family, including former star Chris Evert.
It was there that he met the then-Jana Nejedly, who was in the latter half of a 13-season run on the Women’s Tennis Association tour, a career that featured five years ranked in the top 100.
“We started dating before I became her teacher,” said Stephen, adding that he was hesitant at first to take that job. “Our relationship accelerated quickly, and she asked me if I would coach her and I eventually agreed (in 1999).”
He left the Evert Academy and they traveled the world together the next four years before Jana finally retired in 2003, with that experience preparing them for their next phase together, as they were married in 2004.
“(Working together) definitely had its (stressful) moments,” Jana said, “but we’d say that if we can make it through that, we can make it through anything.”
As the focus shifted to Stephen’s career, he held teaching jobs in Boston, Florida and North Carolina before the couple landed at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif., where Jana’s mother and stepfather lived.
Five years later, the couple received the one offer that could pry them away from that exclusive resort and launch this latest stage in their lives — the chance to run a tennis club together, here at the Yakima Tennis Club.
Although it was difficult to depart California, particularly leaving Jana’s parents, the couple is enjoying a slightly quieter lifestyle while finally accomplishing what they’ve dreamed of for years.
“We came out on top in the end,” Jana said.
Mavericks fall late in opener
April 24, 2011 by YH-R Sports
YAKIMA, Wash. — After a dazzling start, including a record-setting field goal, the Yakima Mavericks have to feel like they literally gave Saturday’s season opener away.
Yakima jumped to a 17-point first-quarter lead, but lost it all, thanks in large part to seven turnovers — six in the second-half — and the Vancouver Vipers slipped out of Zaepfel Stadium with a 21-20 victory in a Pacific Football League game.

“We started off good … but when you have seven turnovers, you’re not going to win a game,” Mavericks general manager Nathan Soptich said.
Yakima’s final miscue, a fumbled punt, set up Vancouver with a short field late in the game. The Vipers took advantage, with quarterback Kyle English scoring on a 2-yard run with about a minute remaining.
Romeen Abdollmohammadi’s extra point provided the winning margin.
Yakima was unable to move the ball into field-goal range on its final possession.
That might not have needed to be too deep in Vancouver territory given Joe Smith’s first-half production.
Yakima’s kicker boomed a 62-yard field goal in the first quarter — breaking his own league record of 60 set two seasons ago — and he also was good from 43 yards out in the second quarter.
That was part of a strong start for the Mavericks, who opened the scoring when Ryan Kemp hit John Lobbestael with a 10-yard scoring pass. After Smith’s record kick, the Mavericks pushed the advantage to 17-0 when Jeremey Franck returned a fumble 32 yards for a score.
That was part of an impressive night for Franck, who also had two interceptions.
English threw a 10-yard TD pass to Ki Mo in the second quarter, but the Mavericks still led 20-3 at the break. Vancouver pulled closer in the third when Mike Ivanov returned a fumble 48 yards for a score.
Kemp was 15 of 29 for 183 yards with three interceptions and a lost fumble. Lobbestael led the team with eight catches for 96 yards, and Ryan Wright rushed for 99 yards on 20 carries.
“It as good to go out and lead most of the game and realize we’re a decent team and can compete,” Soptich said. “We just have to clean some things up. But there’s still a lot of season left.”
Yakima will try again for its first victory next Saturday when it hosts the South Sound Shockers at 6 p.m. at Zaepfel Stadium.

Crimp claims Seniors crown
April 24, 2011 by YH-R Sports
YAKIMA, Wash. — Ellensburg’s Keith Crimp, eager to retune his game for a busy summer of amateur tournament golf, found it quickly enough Saturday, sinking a downhill 25-foot putt for eagle on the fourth playoff hole to win the fourth annual Yakima Valley Seniors Invitational at SunTides Golf Course.
Crimp, a veteran of Northwest amateur tournaments and last year’s winner of the Washington Senior Amateur, erased Ray Gallipo’s five-stroke lead after the first round Friday with steady golf augmented by occasional bright spots, including a chip-in birdie on the seventh hole and a courageous 25-footer on the 18th that forged a three-way tie with Gallipo and 2009 champ Bill Adkison.
Gallipo took his five-stroke lead into the back nine, but disaster struck on the 11th hole. A shocking four-putt cost him three strokes of his lead, and Adkison proceeded to birdie the next hole to close to within one.
Gallipo’s misfortunes continued. His drive on the 18th hooked into the restraining fence and he was forced to chip out backward. His bogey and Adkison’s par sent both to sudden-death, where Crimp awaited.
With a gallery of golf carts following, Adkison was the first two leave, missing a four-footer on the first hole. On the second, Crimp unleashed a 310-yard drive while Gallipo pulled his tee shot under a tree. He managed a low punch shot past the hole and nearly sank a delicate chip. Crimp safely got down in two.
It was finally settled on the fourth playoff hole, as Crimp’s 180-yard 5-iron settled 25 feet from the hole. His eagle putt, at the last moment, trickled in.
“I had good vibes going into the playoff,” said Crimp, who won the City title in 2003. “A few breaks always help, of course. I had straight pars until a bogey on 17, but I made up for it on 18. It’s a nice way to start the year.”
Pat Gavin, battling health problems, put up his best score in several years, capturing low net of the field with a 131 total, including a Saturday 78 in his first weekend of golf.
Several challengers fired and failed during Saturday’s finale. Doug Hearron was steady until two double bogeys in a row took him out of the chase, and Ward Jackson was also in the hunt.
The tournament, with a field of 112, also saw its first hole-in-one Saturday as Dan Rollins knocked in an ace on the 158-yard 13th hole.

Colleges: Yaks sweep Spokane
April 23, 2011 by YH-R Sports
YAKIMA, Wash. — Jose Sermo’s leadoff double ignited a pivotal eighth inning rally in the first game and Steven Schoonover and Matt Wargacki teamed for a four-hitter in the second as No. 2 Yakima Valley extended its winning streak to 14 games Saturday with a 6-4, 4-0 East Region sweep of Spokane at Parker Field.
The wins kept YVCC’s region lead at three games over second-place Columbia Basin. The Yaks (15-1 region, 21-4 overall) visit CBC (12-4, 22-10) for a doubleheader on Wednesday.

But Sermo started the YVCC eighth with his second double of the game, and after a groundout, Ryan King’s single made it 4-2. Trevor Dallman’s fourth hit, a single, scored another run and a walk to William Chavarria loaded the bases.
Tyson Hubbard tied the score with a sacrifice fly, after which a two-base error on Roeman Fields’ hot smash to second plated two more.
Schoonover, a 6-foot-5 left-hander from Lacey, then blanked the Sasquatch (6-10, 16-16) over the first eight innings of the second game while striking out seven.
His walk to start the seventh was his first this season in 391/3 innings.
Dusty Kerns, meanwhile, had a two-run double in the fourth, Konrad Mueller smacked a run-scoring triple in the fifth and Fields had a two-run double in the sixth.
