Fastpitch: Two for 2A

Ellensburg, Selah wiil square off for berth in title game ||

SELAH, Wash. — Morgan McCallister got the perfect pitch. Kari Grow got the perfect takeoff. Brittni Gant turned out to be the perfect call. And the Central Washington Athletic Conference finds itself with a perfect showdown to look forward to on the final day of the Class 2A state fastpitch tournament at Carlon Park.

Check that.

Almost perfect.

When Selah, a team living up to its season-long run of excellence, faces resilient CWAC foe Ellensburg at 10 a.m. today, it will be in the semifinals. A championship battle between the two was never a possibility, since the two were in the same bracket, but each held up its end by winning twice on Friday — and each had to come from behind once to do it. And the possibility of an all-CWAC final ended when Othello lost its quarterfinal game to power-hitting, undefeated Sequim.

“Who’da thunk it?” Selah coach Bill Harris said with a grin after the Vikings (24-2) routed Aberdeen 10-2 to earn the program’s first semifinal berth. “We had our game where we had to come from behind and win, Ellensburg had their game where they had to come back and win, and we had Othello in the winner’s bracket, too.

“That just shows that the top teams from the CWAC can compete with the best in the state.”

Ellensburg (19-8) reached the semis by thumping White River 6-1 and rallying for a 6-4 victory over Centralia, a sharp contrast to last weekend’s regionals, when the Bulldogs suffered back-to-back 10-run drummings.

“They didn’t quit,” said beaming Ellensburg coach Dave Kopczynski. “The kids came out with a purpose today, and I couldn’t be prouder of them.”

The other 10 a.m. semifinal figures to be a real offensive showcase. Sequim (24-0) pounded six homers in its 14-7 quarterfinal rout of Othello on the heels of a wild 12-10 win over Lynden, offensive fireworks that were matched by the Wolves’ next opponent, Anacortes. The Seahawks (21-3) poured on 33 runs in its two victories, including a back-and-forth 10-8 quarterfinal thriller over West Valley of Spokane.

For Selah, the quarterfinal win over Aberdeen was memorable mostly for the Vikings’ two mammoth home runs, one a three-run shot by Jessie Ihly in a five-run first inning and the other a solo shot by Laura Steiner, a blossoming freshman who, Harris said, “with a little bit of confidence will be a terrific hitter.”

But Selah’s critical moment came in its 5-4, eight-inning win against Franklin Pierce. After Lindsey Bolte’s run-scoring single in the top of the eighth put the Cardinals up, Selah tied the game in the bottom half on Sarah Bersing’s RBI single. Then, with Grow pinch-running at first, McCallister ripped a double to the gap in right-center.

“It was the perfect pitch,” said McCallister, who was 4-for-7 on the day. “I couldn’t have asked for a better pitch.”

Nor could the Vikings have had a better — or faster — runner on base than Grow, who scored easily from first.

“I told her if there was anything in the gap, you just go for and keep on running,” said first-base coach Keith Nickles. “I’m telling you, she left like a light. It was amazing. I looked over and she was on third already. Oh, man.”

Ellensburg didn’t have the biggest comeback of the day — that honor would have to go to Othello, which erased a 7-0 deficit in its loser-out game against North Mason and won 13-9 — but the Bulldogs’ five-run, seventh-inning quarterfinal rally against Centralia certainly had the drama.

The Bulldogs had been stymied by Centralia hurler Erika Brower, who had a perfect game through four innings. But Ellensburg took advantage of a Mackenzie Hughes RBI single, three walks, a wild pitch, a hit batter and a Centralia error to push across five runs in the top of the seventh. Then, in the bottom half of the inning, left fielder Lizzy Vick foiled a possible Centralia comeback with a sliding catch to end the game.

The real coup of Ellensburg’s day, though, was sending Brittni Gant — normally a first baseman who hasn’t pitched in a game since early in the 2010 season — out to pitch the opener.

“We took the gamble so we could keep (usual starter) Ally (Burgess) fresh,” Kopczynski said. “We hoped we could get a few runs early, give her a little cushion. We were just really hoping to get two innings out of her.”

Gant went 3 2/3 innings — the first three of them perfect.

Fastpitch: Kittitas rallies, but falls to Reardan

May 28, 2011 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — Nate Phillips was disappointed with another two-and-out showing for his Kittitas Coyotes in the Class 2B state fastpitch tournament, but coach was right on the mark when he said his team sure doesn’t go quietly.

“We’ve gone two-and-out the last three years, but we play some of the most entertaining games here,” Phillips said after the Coyotes lost 14-13 in eight innings to Reardan, with Kittitas erasing a 9-5 deficit in the seventh and the teams combining for 13 runs in the final two innings.

“We fought right to the end. That was an accomplishment to come back,” said pitcher Ashley Hayes, who tied the Reardan game at 9-all with a two-run single in the seventh and then gave the Coyotes a 13-11 lead with another two-run single in the eighth.

“We wanted to get to Saturday … but that second game was definitely worth (the trip to state),” Hayes continued. “No one should hang their heads.”

Kittitas could’ve done just that after losing 23-2 to Adna in its opener, and then falling behind Reardan 7-2 and 9-5, but the Coyotes finally picked themselves up.

After Hayes tied the game in the seventh, Sarena Calahan hit a go-ahead two-run single, but Reardan answered in bottom of the frame on Lauren Ray’s two-out, two-run single.

In the bottom of the eighth, Hayes got the first two hitters, but Chantel Heath doubled and scored on a single by Nevada Van Komen, who went to second on the throw home. After an intentional walk and an infield single loaded the bases, Lelia Haines delivered the game-winning, two-run single over first base and just inside the foul line.

“A lot of people didn’t we’d be back, but these girls worked hard to get here,” said Phillips, noting his team also lost a thrilling 11-inning state game to DeSales last season.

“I’m glad they came back this afternoon. That’s something they can be proud of.”

Today’s noon semifinals have quite the familiar feel, with three Central 2B League teams still in contention, although they may get a stern challenge from an Ashlyn Lyons-led DeSales team.

Lyons, a freshman who pitched here as an eighth-grader last spring, struck out 15 in the Irish’s opening-round win over Toutle Lake, and 13 more in a quarterfinal victory over Northwest Christian.

DeSales will meet defending-champion Pe Ell, with 2009 champ and ’10 runner-up Adna facing three-time 2B title-game qualifier Mossyrock. The championship game is at 4 p.m.

Fastpitch: Knights bounce back, stay alive

May 28, 2011 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — Moments after Sunnyside Christian’s heartbreaking, extra-inning loss to two-time defending state champion Colton, coach Sandy Harris was steadfast in her belief that the game wouldn’t negatively affect her team going forward.

“They’ll bounce back,” Harris said after Sunnyside Christian’s 7-5, eight-inning loss to Colton in the first round of the Class 1B state fastpitch tournament at the Gateway Sports Complex at Kiwanis Park.

Following the confident lead of their coach, the Knights went out less than an hour later and quickly dispatched Quilcene 13-3 to keep their trophy hopes alive.

“That was tough; it was a very emotional game,” Harris said of the Colton loss. “But I knew they would be ready (for Quilcene). These girls want to play for a trophy.”

Sunnyside Christian can accomplish that with a victory over Garfield-Palouse in a 2 p.m. consolation game. The winner advances to the third- and fourth-place game at 4.

Colton had an easier time in the semifinals, holding off Selkirk 8-5, and will face Almira/Coulee-Hartline in today’s 4 p.m. championship game. ACH blasted Highland Christian 35-7 in the first round, and then clipped Gar-Pal 4-0 in the semifinals.

For a time Friday, the Knights looked like they could’ve reached the semifinals, going toe-to-toe with Colton, eventually tying the game 5-5 in the fifth when Devi Knotts hit an RBI single and later scored on an error by the Colton first baseman.

But Colton broke through in the top of the eighth for three runs on Erin Weber’s RBI single, Meghan Heitstuman’s RBI groundout and a run-scoring error.

Sunnyside Christian got a run back in the bottom of the inning and had runners at second and third with two outs, but Mikayla Nygren got a strikeout to end the threat.

“They played their best and worked very hard,” Harris said of her team. “I’m pretty happy. I’d be happier if we had won, but …”

The entire team’s mood brightened later in the day as the Knights used an eight-run first to take command against Quilcene. Makayla Morrow and Grace den Hoed both scored three times, and Emily Bangs capped a solid day by going 2 for 3 with two runs and an RBI triple.

“That’s how they’ve approached things all year,” Harris said. “They’ve never given up.”

Fastpitch: Leopards still alive

May 28, 2011 by

SPOKANE, Wash. — Samantha Robillard scattered five hits and struck out 10, and Zillah found enough offense to offset an outstanding pitching effort by Hailey Bator as the Leopards beat Cle Elum 4-1 in a loser-out game in the rain-delayed Class 1A state fastpitch tournament Friday.

Zillah needs two victories today to assure itself of a trophy.

Zillah got one-hit by Jo Rogers in Colville’s 17-0 victory to start the day, but the Leopards bounced back with a 4-1 win over Seattle Christian.

Track: Record win for Naches’ Taylor

May 28, 2011 by

CHENEY, Wash. — Friday’s blustery conditions made throwing the javelin anything but a breeze for Naches Valley’s Kelsie Taylor.

A quartering gust sliced her first throw to the right — her toss nonetheless covered a very respectable 135 feet — but then her second throw blew out of bounds for a foul. “You get one of those throws every once in a while,” shrugged Taylor

Taylor

But then Taylor got one of those throws the good way, one that rifled through a temporarily calm atmosphere for a Class 1A meet record of 142 feet, 10 inches and a state championship for the Ranger junior, who was runner-up at this meet last year. “It felt like a good throw from the beginning,” she said.

That good throw landed Taylor one of two individual girls championships from Yakima Valley schools on the first day of the Class 1A, 2B and 1B meets at Eastern Washington University.

Klickitat senior Samantha Brewer gathered her fifth state title in three years as she edged league rival Liz Vogt of Trout Lake-Glenwood in the triple jump.

Brewer opened with 34 feet, 6 inches and closed on her sixth jump with a 34-6 3/4 to win the title. Vogt, who won state last year with 34-0 3/4, this year settled for second in 34-2.

Brewer

Brewer spent much of the spring battling a quad injury that limited her competition until recently to the high jump and hurdles. “It caused a lot of pain to run,” said Brewer. But now pain-free, she achieved a triple jump career personal best despite the shortened season.

In winning her javelin title, Taylor switched places with last year’s champion, Kristen Schoenherr of Rainier, who bested Taylor by three feet in 2010 with a 132-00 on her final fling.

Both stepped it up this year, Taylor by 13 feet and Schoenherr taking the runner-up spot with a 137-05. Third was Sarah Waszkewitz of Chelan in 136-11. “It was a really good competition,” said Taylor. “I’m proud of Kristen and Sarah.”

The strong marks came in spite of the fickle breezes. “The wind plays a huge factor,” said Taylor. “A lot of your throws stall in the air.”

Naches coach Lonnie Blanchard views Taylor’s success as an outgrowth of hard work, both in-season and off-season. “She’s excellent to coach,” said Blanchard. “She puts a lot of time in the weight room.”

Taylor added a seventh in the shot put with a throw of 35-11 1/2.

In Class 2B, Riverside Christian’s Bethany Imperial placed fourth in the long jump with 16-7 1/2. She also advanced to today’s finals in the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles, and she is the top-seeded competitor in the triple jump.

Liz Vogt wasn’t the only big scorer for Trout Lake-Glenwood. The 3200 tandem of younger sister Valerie Vogt and junior Lindsey Scott placed second and third in respective times of 12:01:05 and 12:46.06, both personal bests.

Track: Venema wins pole vault, RC eyeing title defense

May 28, 2011 by

CHENEY, Wash. — Bickleton’s Nic Venema had to wait out the wind and the rain before winning the Class B pole vault title. And as thunder sounded on the horizon, Riverside Christian made some Class 2B team rumblings of its own.

The elements themselves added to the element of competition at Friday’s first day of the Class 1A/2B/1B state track and field championships Friday at Eastern Washington University. The meets will conclude today.

Venema

Venema, a junior, had to endure two stoppages of competition due to wind and rain, then found himself in a jumpoff with Pomeroy’s Jon Atchley before clinching his championship with a jump of 11 feet, 6 inches. That’s well below his personal best of 12-2.

Venema said the relentless breeze wasn’t a problem, but the rain and temperatures in the low 50s were. “The wind didn’t bother me. It’s just the weather. I’m so cold, it’s just hard to think.” He added, “The cold weather makes the pole really, really stiff.”

Despite all that, Venema, a junior cleared six inches higher than he did in winning the 2010 competition. Sophomore teammate Peter Clinton, in his first pole vault at state, took third in 11-0, just two inches shy of his personal best.

On the Class 2B side, Riverside Christian got a strong 2-3 long jump finish from Kyle Gartrell and Derek Byrne to set up a state-championship run in today’s finals.

Gartrell cleared 22-10 1/2, just shy of the winning jump of 23-0 3/4 by defending state champion Terrell Boyes of South Bend. Byrne was right behind at 22-3 3/4; Gartrell’s jump was a career best by nine inches, and Byrne’s was a season best.

In an accident of timing, Byrne had to take all his jumps right after running an aggressive and top-qualifying race in a heat of the strength-taxing 300 hurdles. He finished in a solid time of 40.48 seconds and was visibly fatigued as he took his final jumps.

“It (the hurdles) took a little more out of him than he had hoped,” said coach Scott Wells. “That strong headwind zapped it out of him on the homestretch.”

RC will come back today with Gartrell in the triple jump and pole vault, where he has the state’s top marks coming out of the regional meet. Byrne has the third highest seed in the javelin, and he qualified in the 100 hurdles as well as the 300 hurdles.

It’s shaping up as a tight battle as the Crusaders seek to defend their team crown. “I still think it’s a tossup between us, Northwest Christian and South Bend,” Wells said. “I feel our kids are on top of their game.”

Kittitas’ 4×400 relay qualified second in 2B with a time of 3:32.62.

In Class 1A, Zillah showed its strength in the speed events. The Leopards’ Logan Olney qualified fourth for today’s finals in the 100 and 200. Olney anchored a 4×400 relay team that qualified second in a 3:29.19, three seconds faster than its qualifying time last week at regionals. Olney also anchored a 4×100 relay that qualified fifth in 44.07.

Kerry Duffy of La Salle ran the third-fastest qualifier in the 100 (11.28) and the fifth fastest in the 400 (50.96).

Track: WV girls in position for big day

May 28, 2011 by

TACOMA, Wash. — West Valley’s girls have all their pieces in position. Now it’s time to turn it loose and play for keeps.

Senior Chantel Jaeger won her prelims in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, looking smooth and in control doing so, and sophomore Lindsay Burns won her heat in the 400 and scored points in the long jump during Friday’s competition in the Class 3A state track and field championships, which conclude today with eight non-stop hours of finals at Mt. Tahoma High School.

With the 4×200 and 4×400 relays that advanced from Thursday’s prelims, the Rams are poised to score heavily in five events today and make a run at their second consecutive state trophy.

Burns

But there’s a lot to deal with as these events unfold alongside the 4A and 2A championship meets, not the least of which is the unstable weather that has swept the stadium with rain, wind and teasingly brief glimpses of the sun for the last two days.

For the second year in a row that type of weather caused problems in the pole vault as Friday’s 4A boys final, featuring state-leader Marcus Schooley of Davis, was rescheduled for this morning.

“You could see it coming the way the day was going,” said Davis coach Rick Clark, referring to Friday’s two earlier events that were sporadically delayed, pushing back the scheduled 4:30 start of the 4A boys. “It’s an early start (8:30 a.m. today) but Marcus handles these things pretty well. It’s supposed to be a little nicer tomorrow.”

That would be just fine with Jaeger and Burns, who warmed up for their prelims often with rain and sun at the same time.

Burns got in her long jump final well before the 400 prelims, which was good because she’s nursing a tender quadriceps strain from last week. While a bit disappointed with her best jump of 17 feet, 3/4-inch, that did earn fourth place and five team points and it was a two-place bump up from last year’s sixth-place finish as a freshman.

“The long jump bothers my quad the most, so that’s a little frustrating she said after running 57.20 in her 400 prelim. “I was hoping for one big jump and I got it, but it was barely a scratch. Now I just want to rest up and be ready for our relays tomorrow.”

Jaeger marshaled her efforts well Friday, winning her 100 heat in 12.49 and her 200 prelim in 25.30 — both into headwinds. She will be the busiest of all today, competing in four finals over the course of the long day — the 4×200 (10:10 a.m.), 100 (1:05 p.m.), 200 (4:10) and 4×400 (5:20).

“Today was just about getting a feel for the track, and now it’s about getting out of this weather,” Jaeger said after one of the heaviest soakings of the day. “I’m excited for tomorrow because those are my last races. I want to run good times, hopefully even PR, and win one.”

Jaeger and Burns watched the winner of the other heat in the 100 and 400 run faster, so they know nothing will come easy.

With 12 of the 18 events still to be contested today, Holy Names of Seattle set a strong early pace with 28 points and has plenty more in the track finals.

Elsewhere for the Valley in Friday’s field-event finals, the top medalists were a pair of CWAC throwers in 2A — Prosser’s Tamara Jones taking third in the girls shot and East Valley’s Jacobe Valenzuela fourth in the boys javelin.

In the final athletic event of her long and stellar career at Prosser, Jones reached 38-5 1/4 in the shot for third — a year after not making it beyond district. After graduation, she will resume playing for her off-season basketball team, the Seattle Blaze, and then head off to Columbia Basin College.

“I was hoping to place as high as I could — any spot would’ve been fine as long as I threw well,” said Jones, who was just off her Valley best of 39-2. “I scratched my first two throws so I had to get one in to make the finals. After that it got a little easier and I improved.”

Valenzuela not only wasn’t here last year, the East Valley senior didn’t even compete in track.

“I came out to run the 100 because I was always fast in football. But then I tried the javelin and that worked out better,” he said. “I didn’t imagine getting this far.”

Back then he didn’t, but after throwing 184-1 last week Valenzuela set his sights on perhaps winning a state title. While his best of 170-2 on Friday seemed disappointing, it was still worth fourth and he earned that throwing a competitor’s javelin.

“The guys from Cheney helped me out because they wouldn’t let me use mine,” he said. “The specs for weight and balance were OK but it was like three centimeters short. That was weird.”

Toppenish’s Angie Zuniga qualified for the 2A finals in the 100 and 200, assuring her medals in the two sprints for the third straight year, and she will also anchored the Wildcats’ 4×100 and 4×200 today.

Ellensburg’s Shannon Bland will join Zuniga in the 100 and 200 finals, and Prosser’s Madison Moore placed second in her 300 hurdle prelim after placing seventh in the pole vault.

Fossum reaches semis

May 28, 2011 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — Naches Valley’s Larisa Fossum put friendship on hold for a bit Friday afternoon and ensured herself a third medal at the Class 1A-2B-1B tennis tournament at the Yakima Tennis Club.

The Rangers senior topped Tenino’s Kirsten Jorgensen — who, along with her family, is staying with the Fossums this weekend — 6-2, 7-5 in quarterfinal play.

“It’s really too bad that they had to meet so early,” said Naches Valley coach — and Larisa’s mother — Teresa Fossum, noting that the two both won their respective district tournaments but fell victims to the seeding process.

Fossum advances to this morning’s semifinal round at 8:30 where she’ll meet Forest Ridge’s Michelle Lui. Lui has dropped just one game in her two matches.

Friday’s action was pushed interrupted for more than an hour because of rain. Some of the action was moved to the YTC’s indoor facilities on Fruitvale Boulevard before all matches returned to the outdoor courts.

The delay coupled with the cool weather hardly made for ideal tennis conditions, but it did little to slow Fossum.

“It’s not too bad once you get on the court and get warmed up,” she said.

The fourth-place finisher a year ago, Fossum reeled off four straight games to close the first set. Then, trailing 5-4 four in the second, she held serve to tie the score and won the last two games to close the match.

She gave Jorgensen a big hug at the net following the match.

Fossum will be joined in the semifinals by SCAC rival Italia Mengarelli, who topped University Prep’s Carrie Rotkis 6-7-5, 3-6, 7-5 in the quarterfinals.

It’s the third time the Spartans senior had played at state but the first time she has medaled.

“I focus all my time on basketball and volleyball,” said Mengarelli, a key cog for the Spartans basketball team which finished no worse than fourth at state during her four years. “Tennis is something I do to keep in shape.”

Mengarelli with play Tonasket’s Megan Byers in the semifinals, also at 8:30 this morning.

Mengarelli

On the boys side, Zillah’s Troy Dunbar will play for fourth and seventh place. It’s the third trip to state for the Leopards junior and his first medal.

Overlake’s Trym Torvund, second a year ago, rolled into the semifinals dropping just two games along the way.

Last year’s third-place finisher, Daniel Ham of Charles Wright, likewise lost just two games in advancing to the final four.

Cascade Christian’s Nathan Anderson, the singles champion last year, and Ty King are in the doubles semis and didn’t lose a game until their fourth set Friday.

La Salle’s Brendan Stewart and Jacob Tri will play for fifth and eighth place while Goldendale’s Keith Bighorn is still in medal contention.

May 28, 2011 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — The West Valley tennis team Friday returned two duos to the semifinal round for the second straight year.

Only this time around, the girls joined the party.

Carly Riehl and Carley Schmidt advanced to the final four of the Class 3A tournament in Kennewick. The tandem, which won the regional title last weekend, won both matches in straight sets.

Likewise, Cooper Anderson and Daniel Wenker needed just four sets to advance to the semifinals. It’s a return trip for both players, although they made it in 2010 with different partners.

Anderson took third place with Jeff Carlson (who graduated last year) while Wenker was fifth with Aaron Farmer.

Farmer advanced to state in singles this year and won his first match before dropping his next two and bowing of the tournament.

West Valley’s other boys doubles team — Mitchell Anderson and Craig Heflick — won their opener before losing two straight.

In Class 2A action at the University of Washington’s Nordstrom Tennis Center, Ellensburg’s Abigail Pellett is in the semifinals for the second straight year. The CWAC district and 2A Eastern regional champion won her matches in straight set.

The two wins ensure Pellett her third straight medal. The senior took fifth last season and was sixth in 2009.

Area doubles teams John Olsen-Austin Wilson (East Valley) and Karley Crawford-Helen Petersen (Prosser) remained in trophy contention.

At the 4A tournament in Vancouver, Davis doubles team Erica and Megumi DeMond fell in the quarterfinals but can still earn a medal.

Eisenhower freshman Claire Bohoskey bounced back from a first-round defeat to stay alive for a trophy.
