Baseball: Sehome hands Chehalis first loss
May 28, 2011 by Roger Underwood
YAKIMA, Wash. — The scouting report on unbeaten Chehalis, John Albert recalled, was actually quite monotonous.
“We’re going over their lineup,” the Sehome senior right-hander said, “and it’s like, ‘Great hitter, great hitter, great hitter.’ The only change would be, ‘This guy’s going D-I, and so is this guy.’”
But while the Bearcats do in fact have two players who are going D-I, Albert’s Mariners are going to the Class 2A state championship game thanks to a 3-2 semifinal victory Friday at Yakima County Stadium.
Sehome meets Burlington-Edison tonight at 7 for the title.

While Sehome’s state history is more extensive — the M’s won crowns in 2007 and 2008 — Chehalis’ was more recent. The defending champs were 24-0 coming into Friday, due in no small part to pitcher-first baseman Robert Pehl and shortstop Erik Forgione, both of whom have signed to play at Washington.
Pehl produced three of his team’s seven hits, but Albert kept the other Bearcats largely in check, striking out four, hitting two and walking none in a complete-game performance that saw Sehome (19-7) claim the tense, see-saw battle by scoring two sixth-inning runs with two-outs.
With the M’s down 2-1, Albert drew a leadoff walk against Pehl and moved to second on a groundout. Hayden Knight then singled to left on an 0-2 pitch, scoring Albert to tie the score, and Knight came all the way around when Travis Boyd lined a triple over right-fielder Bryce Hanson’s head.
Sehome had broken through for a 1-0 lead against Pehl in the fourth. Colin Peterson, who’d reached on an error, scored on Boyd’s double to right. But Knight, who had singled ahead of Boyd, was thrown out at the plate after Peterson scored, and Boyd was then caught in a rundown between second and third before being tagged out.
The Bearcats took the lead in the top of the sixth as successive doubles by Pehl and Mitch Gueller scored one run, though Gueller was later retired on a failed suicide squeeze. Justin Wilson, who whiffed on the aforementioned bunt attempt, singled with two outs and then scored on Keylen Steen’s double to the wall in left-center.

Burlington-Edison 8, Clarkston 3: Burlington-Edison rolled to a big lead early and cruised to an 8-3 victory over Clarkston on Friday in the Class 2A state baseball semifinals.
The win sends B-E (17-8) into Saturday’s 7 p.m. championship game against Sehome, which beat previously unbeaten Chehalis 3-2 earlier Friday.
B-E’s Reed Perry tossed the complete-game victory, getting into only mild trouble in the seventh inning, when Clarkston rapped three of its hits and scored all its runs. Otherwise, Perry struck out seven and took advantage of two double plays to shut down potential Bantam rallies in the third and fourth innings.
The Tigers scored all eight runs in the first four innings, and put the game away with three runs in the fourth. Six of B-E’s eight runs were earned as the Tigers pounded 10 hits.
Dylan Boe paced B-E with a 3-for-4 effort, and Dalton Schwetz added two hits and two RBIs.
Layton Bush led Clarkston with a 2-for-3 game.

Two and out for YVCC baseball
May 28, 2011 by YH-R Sports
LONGVIEW, Wash. — Yakima Valley’s first NWAACC Tournament baseball appearance since 2000 was both brief and inglorious.
After falling 9-3 to Lower Columbia in a first-round game late Thursday night, the Yaks were eliminated by Mount Hood in a Friday loser’s bracket game, 7-4, at Story Field.
Thursday, in a game that started an hour and 20 minutes late and was twice delayed by weather-related issues, YVCC struck out 15 times against LC starter Jeff Ames, who allowed only five hits and one unearned run over eight innings.
Will Chavarria had two hits and Jose Sermo doubled for YVCC, which took a 1-0 lead in the third before surrendering nine unanswered runs.
Friday against Mount Hood, the Yaks pounded out 12 hits only to see the Saints roll up 18 safeties off four YVCC pitchers.
Tyler Berman was 3 for 5 with two RBI in the final game of a stellar two-year Yakima Valley career. Cameron Padron doubled and J.R. Weigel and Dusty Kerns had runs batted in.
The Yaks, who shared the East Region championship with Columbia Basin, finished their season 32-12.

YAKIMA, Wash. — A banner season for Central Washington’s fastpitch team continues to reap rewards.
Two Wildcats, Samantha Petrich and Kelsey Haupert, were named NCAA Division II all-Americans on Thursday by Daktronics, Inc.
For Petrich, the accolade came after she was named West Region player of the year, also by Daktronics. The senior shortstop from Chehalis also was runnerup to Grand Valley State’s Katie Martin in voting for national player of the year, and previously had been named CWU’s female athlete of the year for the academic year of 2010-2011.
Petrich batted .455 with 13 home runs and 41 runs batted in. She also compiled a .942 fielding percentage over 190 defensive chances at shortstop.
During the regular season, in which Central won its second straight GNAC championship and accompanying D-II regional playoff berth, Petrich set a conference record for both on-base percentage at .579 and walks with 36.
Coming to CWU from Lower Columbia College, Petrich finished her two-year Wildcat career with a .413 batting average, 29 homers and 105 RBI.
Haupert, an Olympia product who began her college career at Purdue, was a second-team all-American last year. This spring she led all of Division II with 21 homers while batting .451 and totaling 53 RBI.
She became Central’s career homer leader in only two seasons with 39 and concluded her career with a .399 average and 118 RBI.
Only one other D-II school — Rollins College of Florida — placed more than one player on the 13-player all-American first team.
The Wildcats finished their season 34-16.
