Golf notes: Honesty earns Gravbrot a spot in Sports Illustrated

June 29, 2011 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — One of golf’s enduring qualities is the integrity shown by those that play.

Eric Gravbrot provided a shining example of that in winning the Class 3A state tournament last month, and his honesty earned him recognition in the June 27 issue of Sports Illustrated.

The recent West Valley High graduate was listed in the magazine’s weekly “Faces in the Crowd” section.

Gravbrot, as the item noted, was trailing by three strokes on the eighth hole during the second and final round when he “called a penalty on himself when only he saw his ball move after he addressed it,” the magazine wrote.

Even though it made his task more challenging, Gravbrot didn’t hesitate to note the penalty on himself. The move may have motivated Gravbrot, who then shot 5-under over his remaining 10 holes to not only win the state title, but also post the lowest score (7-under 137) in any of the five state levels.

Crimp 13th in Sr. Open qualifier

WOODINVILLE, Wash. — Ellensburg’s Keith Crimp shot an 80 to tie for 13th place in the U.S. Senior Open qualifying event Wednesday at Bear Creek Country Club.

Kent Potts from Desert Aire Golf Course in Mattawa tied for 33rd after shooting 84.

Tom Sovay from Mukilteo and Jim McNelis of Gig Harbor both shot even-par 72 to earn the two qualifying spots for the U.S. Senior Open July 28-31 at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio.

Gonzales scores ace in Idaho

POST FALLS, Idaho — John Gonzales from Yakima recorded a hole in one during his round Monday at the Links Golf Course. He used a 4-iron to ace the 180-yard 17th hole.

Tod Berghoff witnessed the shot.

Daniels records Cherry Hills ace

GRANGER, Wash. — Chris Daniels Sr. had an ace during his round Wednesday at Cherry Hills Golf Course. Daniels used a wedge to ace the 78-yard fifth hole.

Tom Taylor, Virgil Myers and Harley Riel witnessed the shot.

Bears club four home runs to top Spokane

June 28, 2011 by

SPOKANE, Wash. — A day after barely hitting the ball out of the infield in a shutout loss, Yakima didn’t just find its swing on Tuesday.

The Bears flew the fences.

In dire need of some pop in its lineup, Yakima broke out in a huge way with four home runs in the first four innings and went on a beat the Spokane Indians 7-5 in their Northwest League series opener at Avista Stadium.

With just one round-tripper through their first 11 games, the Bears opened the flood gates Tuesday with solo homers from Jae Yun Kim, Zach Jones, Garrett Weber and Daniel Pulfer — an barrage that offered a nice tonic following Monday’s 10-0 home humbling against the Tri-City Dust Devils.

Even with the early long-ball show, the Bears found themselves clinging to a 5-4 lead through five innings. But Yakima got what it needed to secure its fourth win from a trio of relievers and some clutch hitting.

With two outs in the sixth inning, Jimmy Comerota singled in Pulfer for a 6-4 lead and Jones made it 7-4 when he darted home on a wild pitch. Pulfer, batting leadoff, finished 3 for 5 to spark Yakima’s 12-hit offense.

Yakima starter Teo Gutierrez worked five innings to push his record to 2-0, and his victory was preserved by the stout relief effort of Andrew Zizinia, Kable Hogben and Evan Marshall. In four combined innings, the trio allowed one run and two hits and struck out five.

Before it broke out the bats, Yakima played small ball for a quick lead in the top of the first. Tyler Bream reached base on catcher interference with two outs, took third on Comerota’s single and then stole home.

Yakima and Spokane resume the three-game series today at 6:30 p.m.

Martin moves to the front of Women’s City Tournament

June 28, 2011 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — It’s probably a good thing that today is an off day in the Women’s City Golf Tournament.

Rest up, ladies, Thursday’s final round could be quite a shootout.

Eight-time winner Pat Martin climbed to the top of Tues-day’s 36-hole leader-board but she is just one stroke ahead of Chris Scacco and three up on Cindi Stewart heading into Thursday’s final round at SunTides Golf Course.

Martin shot a round of 79 on Tuesday at Apple Tree Golf Course, giving her a two-day total of 160. She opened Monday with an 81 at Yakima Elks.

Scacco matched Martin’s 79 at Apple Tree and she sits in second at 161 one stroke off the pace. Stewart’s 81 positioned her third at 163 heading into the rest day.

Nancy Eglin, the four-time reigning City champion, is fourth at 165.

Martin, Scacco, Stewart and Eglin will be paired together on Thursday, starting at the 18th hole at 8 a.m.

Debbie Nethery, the first-round leader with her 80 at Elks, followed up Tuesday with 89 and slipped to sixth.

Barbara Fortier is the two-day net leader at 137.

Devils dust Bears, 10-0

June 27, 2011 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — Among the positives the Bears could point to through their first 10 games was that in none of their seven losses had they been blown out.

To Yakima’s chagrin, not to mention that of an announced 1,198 fans at Yakima County Stadium, that distinction ended in the 11th.

Tri-City, stunned the evening prior when the Bears rallied for five ninth-inning runs and a walkoff win, came out swinging Monday night and didn’t let up, pounding out 16 hits en route to a 10-0 triumph.

Yakima’s clubhouse, alive with optimism some 24 hours earlier, was predictably placid this time.

“We couldn’t execute anything tonight,” manager Audo Vicente said quietly. “We had bad pitching, couldn’t generate any offense and had some defensive lapses. That’s a bad combination.”

If the Bears’ Sunday win wasn’t their most impressive of the season, it clearly had been their most inspiring. It had also given them a chance to claim their first series.

Instead, Yakima (3-8) will travel to Spokane for three games having lost seven of nine, including its most one-sided defeat, before coming home Friday for the first of three against Boise.

A trio of Dust Devils — Tyler Massey, Jared Simon and Jayson Langfels — had three hits apiece while Massey, Jordan Ribera and Ryan Casteel drove in two runs each.

The Bears, so encouraged by their aforementioned late-inning uprising, reverted to previous offensive struggles.

They managed only five hits — or as many as they’d gotten in the ninth inning Sunday — and were blanked for the third time this year and second time on the six-game homestand.

Yakima put just three runners in scoring position, two in the first inning in which they had the bases loaded with one out.

Bright spots were Zach Jones and Danny Pulfer, each of whom was 2 for 4. Mike Blake, ragged initially in relief of Greg Robinson, retired his last four hitters before Justin Albert worked a 1-2-3 ninth.

Against starter Brad Wilson, Tri-City (6-5) scored a run on two hits in the first, added two more on three hits and a Bear error in the third, used another hit and error to tally a run in the fourth and got a quick strike on Ribera’s one-out, line-drive solo homer in the fifth.

The big fly was Ribera’s second of the year and boosted his RBI total to 11, which ranks among the league leaders.

Through all of that, Yakima trailed only 5-0. Then came the seventh.

Robinson recorded just one out while the Devils hammered out five hits, including back to back doubles off the right-field wall.

Blake was summoned after a fourth straight hit off Robinson, wild-pitching home the fourth run of the frame while a fifth would plate on Tri-City’s seventh hit of the inning.

“It was a rough night, but that’s baseball,” Vicente said. “One day everything can be all sunny and the next it can get really ugly. Today happened, but today is over. We have to be ready to play baseball tomorrow.”

BEARS UPDATE

Next game

Opponent: Spokane Indians.

When, where: 6:30 p.m. today, Avista Stadium, Spokane.

Radio: KUTI (1460).

Probable pitchers: Yakima RHP Teo Gutierrez (1-0, 3.65) vs. Spokane LHP Victor Payano (0-0, 2.25).

Notes

UNHITTABLE: Bears right-hander Kable Hogben was playing cards with several teammates Monday after batting practice. It wasn’t known if the ace reliever was playing Texas hold-em, but he clearly has been holding Northwest League hitters.

Hogben on Monday was named the Northwest League’s pitcher of the week for June 20-26, and why not?

In eight innings of relief this season over four appearances, the 6-foot-3, 188-pound Australian has allowed no runs on only three hits. He has no walks and 14 strikeouts.

Including last year, when Hogben posted an 0.72 earned-run average over 371?3 innings, fanning 43 and walking just seven while earning 10 saves, the 22-year-old has compiled an 0.59 ERA over 451?3 innings as a Bear.

HUMAN VACUUM CLEANER: Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson was known as the Human Vacuum Cleaner for his extraordinary defensive play at third base, but Yakima’s Jimmy Comerota might be in line for a similar nickname.

After handling 101 fielding chances at first base without an error, Comerota played left field Sunday and made a skidding catch of a foul popup on the warning track.

In addition to not committing an error, Comerota has saved his teammates from several infractions at first with scoops out of the dirt. He also has robbed opponents of multiple hits with diving stabs of shots down the line.

The former Rice University standout said he played several infield positions in college, but spent most of his time at first and played only sparingly in the outfield.

VIPS IN TOWN?: After a slow start last year, several Bears put Ty Cobb on the Yakima County Stadium pass list and kept him there after several ensuing victories.

Or as veteran manager Bob Didier quipped, “He was one of the guys I played with.”

Tri-Cities’ visiting Dust Devils might have taken a similar tact after Sunday’s loss here, in which Yakima scored five times in the bottom of the ninth inning for a 6-5 victory.

Bears officials said the Dust Devils had Jennifer Aniston and Megan Fox on their pass list for Monday night’s game.

Phillips: Best parts of fishing trips aren’t always the catch

June 27, 2011 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — Sometimes a fishing trip isn’t all about catching fish. Sometimes the fish-catching is just a nice added bonus.

Such was the case when my sons, Kyle and Kevin, and I jumped on a plane and headed to the land of the midnight sun last week. Yes, we were going up to do some salmon and halibut fishing, but we were also going to see some of Alaska and to spend some quality time together.

The idea came about a couple of years ago when Kevin suggested he would like to go to Alaska sometime. And while Kyle had a chance to go with me to Alaska’s Prince of Wales Island a few years back, neither he nor Kevin had ever been to mainland Alaska.

Our plan was to do it last summer, but as is the case with many things, we all got too busy and it just never happened.

I decided there was never going to be the right time, so with some added pushing from my wife Terri, we started making plans for a trip when both the boys and I could work it into our busy schedules.

It just so happened we were heading north the day after Father’s Day, and would be there during the summer solstice, when there would be more than enough daylight to see all there was to see.

Perfect timing. Well, perfect timing for everything but the fishing.

Fishing in the Alaska is supposed to be Nirvana. A place where you catch so many fish you get tired of reeling them in. Big fish, too — bigger than any you have ever caught.

There is some truth to that, of course. But many parts of Alaska are experiencing some of the same problems we are here in the Northwest. Salmon runs in some parts of Alaska are way down. Fisheries are facing emergency closures on many rivers. It is hurting their economy big time.

Still, knowing the fishing was not probably going to be great, we hooked up with Mel Erickson of Alaskan Gamefisher out of Soldotna, and he and guide Bruce Hewitt did their best to put us on some fish.

On the drive from Anchorage to Soldotna we saw mountain goats, moose, eagles and some of the prettiest country in the world. We stopped and did the tourist thing at Portage Glacier and had a great time just catching up on everything in our busy lives as we drove in the rental car.

Our first day of fishing was for halibut in Cook’s Inlet near Homer. And we had a great day. We did actually catch so many fish, our arms ached. Of course, reeling up four-pound dropper weights from 200 feet of water might have had a little to do with that, too.

We all caught our two fish limits of halibut — most in the 25-pound range — and Kyle wrestled a nice big 75-pounder into the boat that helped load down our fish box considerably.

After halibut fishing we did more of the touristy stuff and had lunch in the neat fishing village of Homer, again just spending time together like we used to when the boys were younger.

The next day we fished on the world-famous Kenai River. Fishing on the Kenai has been tough — not just this year, but for several. We felt really lucky when Hewitt, who lives and guides in the Tri-Cities when he isn’t guiding during the summer in Alaska, put Kevin on a beautiful 40-pound Kenai River king. Kevin’s fish was one of the fewer than 10 caught on the river that day. Pretty sad when you consider there were dozens and dozens of guide boats on the river full of anglers from around the world hoping to catch a salmon.

Our final day of fishing was on the Kasilof River, about 12 miles west of the Kenai. Again, we saw lots and lots of drift boats, with very few fish caught. On that day we were not one of the lucky ones.

But we still had a good time, watching the eagles, talking with other anglers and just hanging out together.

Even with the fishing being poor, with our limits of halibut and Kevin’s big salmon, we brought home nearly 100 pounds of fillets. But more importantly, we spent five great days together before Kevin hustled off to his life and job in Dallas, and Kyle started his marathon, no-days-off summer with his fruit business.

I didn’t catch many fish, but it was sure one great trip. Sometimes a fishing trip is more than just catching fish.
