Bears power past S-K for first win of second half

July 31, 2011 by

KEIZER, Ore. — Lining up seven hits in a string of eight at-bats spanning the second and third innings, the Yakima Bears bolted to an early seven-run lead and cruised to a 9-2 victory over Salem-Keizer on Saturday at Volcanoes Stadium.

The Bears also got plenty of defense, turning three double plays, and pitching with starter Yiomar Camacho joining two relievers in a five-hitter with eight shutout innings.

Outfielder Marc Bourgeois led the offensive charge, going 4 for 5 with three runs and one of Yakima’s four doubles. Daniel Pulfer was 3 for 4 and Henry Zabala drove in three runs as the Bears outhit the home team 16-5.

Camacho scattered four hits over six innings for his first win, and Michael Blake and Sammy De Los Santos took care of the final three innings with three strikeouts, no walks and one hit.

The Bears tagged S-K starter Brandon Allen for 11 hits and chased him after three innings with a 7-0 lead.

With Zabala on second with his seventh double of the season, Yakima issued its first barrage against Allen in the second inning with consecutive two-out, run-scoring hits by Tyson Van Winkle (single), Pulfer (double) and Westley Moss (single).

And there was plenty more.

In the third inning the Bears resumed with four singles in a row, capped by Zabala’s hit to right that scored two and pushed the margin to 5-0. Pulfer later added another two-out RBI, singling home Zabala for a 7-0 cushion.

Saturday’s win was Yakima’s first in the five-game series, which concludes today with a 5:05 start.

Bellingham wins state Legion title

July 31, 2011 by

SELAH, Wash. — John Albert’s leadoff home run in the bottom of the 11th inning lifted Bellingham to a 10-9 victory over the Spokane Bandits in Saturday’s Senior Legion state championship game at Carlon Park.

The two teams battled for 20 innings total on Saturday with Spokane forcing a second title game by knocking off previously unbeaten Bellingham 9-5 in the afternoon.

Albert, a Sehome grad who was Bellingham’s winning pitcher on Tuesday, was 4 for 6 and his game-winning solo shot was the team’s third home run in the game.

Teammate Anthony Pitsch clubbed a grand slam in the third inning for his fourth home run in three days, three of them coming against the Bandits. Ben Wilson also homered for Post 7 in the eighth inning, keying a three-run rally to erase Spokane’s 8-5 lead.

Both starters went the distance in the lengthy nightcap as winner Hayden Knight struck out 12 and allowed only four earned runs for Bellingham, which had walk-off home runs in two of its last three games.

Bellingham (40-11) advances to the Northwest regional tournament in Billings, Mont. on Aug. 4-8. The Bandits (27-15) finished second for the second year in a row.

The same torrid hitting that Spokane used to knock out Yakima Valley on Friday continued in Saturday’s first title game. The Bandits sprayed 19 hits and took the lead for good with four runs in the fifth inning.

Gerhard Muelheims and Josh Martin both had four hits as the top four batters in the Bandits lineup went 12 for 19.

Going out with a bang

Pak’s run ends with high-scoring affair ||

SELAH, Wash. — This is the kind of loss that burns in the belly. And the Yakima Valley Pepsi Pak know the feeling all too well.

With a season’s end at stake, the Pak pounded out a season-high 20 runs, belted two home runs including a grand slam and lashed six doubles. But it wasn’t enough.

For the second year in a row and in exactly the same situation and circumstance, the Spokane Bandits outslugged the Pak for a 24-20 marathon victory in the Senior Legion state tournament Friday night at Carlon Park.

A year after eliminating Yakima Valley from the final four with a similarly wild 17-14 win, the Bandits will play for the state title once again — this time against unbeaten Bellingham. Today’s championship game starts at 4 p.m., and if the Bandits manage to knock off Post 7, a second game would start 45 minutes later.

Just over a week after beating the Bandits 8-6 in the regional round on the same field, the Pak just couldn’t hold down Spokane’s offense, which had base runners constantly swarming like gnats under the bright stadium lights.

With five college players, and a total of eight veterans from the squad that finished second last year to Pacific Tech, the Bandits piled up 26 hits and scored four runs in the second, third, fourth, fifth and seventh innings.

This was the kind of night Spokane had: No. 9 batter Blake Bozett was 5 for 6 with a triple, three runs and four RBI. David McNeill, a Lewis & Clark grad who just finished his freshman year at Biola University, clubbed a three-run homer in the first inning — quickly spoiling the Pak’s 4-0 start — and finished with five RBI.

For all of Spokane’s relentless fireworks, Yakima Valley nearly matched the torrid pace. The Pak built a 12-7 lead after Hugo Lemus’ grand slam highlighted a seven-run outburst in the third, and YV had its own hot No. 9 batter — catcher Steven Hillier was 3 for 5 with a double, home run and four RBI.

After both teams put up four runs in the seventh, the Pak trailed 24-17 and finally blanked Spokane for a frame in the eighth when ace D.J. Smith came on after Tuesday’s complete-game gem.

In the ninth the home crowd came alive when the Pak put up three more runs, loaded the bases and brought the tying run to the plate.

That was enough for Spokane to summon its ace, and lefty Sage Poland from Corban University via Lewis and Clark High, got the final out.

Tyler Gallaway and Michael Wyatt, the Pak’s 1-2 batters, were a combined 6 for 10 with three runs each. Wyatt reached base seven times.

Kurt Lindemann and Lemus, the Pak’s 3-4 batters, combined to drive in eight runs and score five.

In reaching the state’s final four for the fifth consecutive season, Yakima Valley finished the summer 29-17 and 4-2 in the postseason.

State legion: Bellingham will play for title

July 30, 2011 by

SELAH, Wash. — Zach Slesk delivered two clutch hits in the final two innings, and scored on Anthony Pitsch’s game-winning, two-out home run in the bottom of the ninth as Bellingham eliminated Hanford in a wild Senior Legion state tournament game Friday at Carlon Park.

Bellingham remained unbeaten and needs to win just once today to claim the state championship.

Friday’s game was unpredictable with the lead changing hands five times, including three in the final 11/2 innings when the teams combined for 12 runs.

Down 10-8 entering the bottom of the eighth, Bellingham took the lead on Slesk’s bases-loaded triple, with Benjamin Wilson adding a two-run single for a 13-10 lead.

Hanford scored four unearned runs in the top of the ninth to regain the lead at 14-13, but Bellingham had one final answer in the bottom half of the frame.

Eric Ho got a one-out single, stole second and scored the tying run on Slesk’s double. One batter later, Pitsch homered.

Pitsch finished 3 for 4 with a homer and two doubles, and four runs and two RBI. Wilson was 4 for 5 with three RBI, and Mitchell Tripp added a three-run homer in a five-run first for Bellingham.

For the Flames, A.J. Hoskins was 2 for 4 with three runs, and Colin Serkowski was 1 for 3 with three runs and two RBI.

Busy weekend in Ellensburg

July 30, 2011 by

Whisky Dick, sprint triathlon, 10K all on tap ||

YAKIMA, Wash. — Ellensburg will be the center of this state’s running-swimming-biking community this weekend with three races centered in or around the city, highlighted by Sunday’s venerable Whisky Dick Triathlon.

For years the Whisky Dick, now in its 29th year, was the only show in town on whatever July Sunday it took place. This weekend, though, it will share the spotlight with today’s third annual Ellensburg Sprint Triathlon and Sunday’s Ellensburg 10K Run. Each of the races are being overseen, from registration to results, by Auburn-based BuDu Racing.

Third-place finisher John Wiberg, right, shakes hands with runner-up Robert Pritchett while winner Lane Seeley, left, looks on following the 2010 Whisky Dick Triathlon. (Andy Sawyer/Yakima Herald-Republic)

The man everybody will be chasing in Sunday’s race figures to be Drew Magill, a 46-year-old from Bellevue whose five 2010 triathlon victories included the Ellensburg Sprint Triathlon. Magill didn’t compete in the next day’s Whisky Dick, but this year he is entered in both, which would make for a challenging double.

His biggest challenges could well be last year’s Whisky Dick runner-up and fifth-place finishers, Robert Pritchett and Steve Moore, respectively.

On the women’s side, the Whisky Dick lineup will feature a couple of past champions with lengthy resumes in the race — Heidi Hubler of Bonney Lake, who won the race in 2007 and 2008, and Amy Jo Turi of North Bend, who won three of the previous five races before Hubler’s two-year reign.

Today’s sprint triathlon, in which Magill will attempt to defend his title, begins at 8 a.m. and ends at the same location, Irene Rinehart Riverfront Park off E. Umptanum Road alongside the Yakima River southwest of Ellensburg. The “sprint” aspect refers to the comparatively shorter stage distances (quarter-mile swim, 13 3/4-mile bike, 2.7-mile run).

Sunday’s Whisky Dick begins at 8:30 a.m. at Vantage with a significantly more arduous task facing the participants — a one-mile swim route in the Columbia, followed by a 28-mile bicycle ride that includes 12 miles of thigh-killing uphill to the top of the Whisky Dick Ridge, and finally a 6.2-mile run.

The 10K run will begin Sunday at 9:30 a.m., beginning at the Whisky Dick’s bike/run transition area at the Ellensburg public pool and following the same course the Whisky Dick participants will run an hour or two later.

Bears fade against Salem-Keizer

July 30, 2011 by

KEIZER, Ore. — Yakima’s Bears had a field day against Salem-Keizer starter Cameron Lamb.

It was a shame that Lamb only lasted three innings.

Four Salem-Keizer relievers combined to allow just one more hit and one run over the final six innings, with the final three hurlers throwing 41/3 innings of hitless relief, allowing the Volcanoes to rally for a 10-7 victory.

Yakima (13-29 overall) jumped to a 6-0 lead after 21/2 innings, highlighted by David Narodowski’s three-run homer in the third and Westley Moss’ two-run single in a three-run second.

But Salem-Keizer got half of those runs back in the bottom of the third to start its comeback. The Volcanoes trimmed the margin to 7-5 after four and then overtook the Bears with a four-run sixth.

Leonardo Ochoa tied the game at 7-7 with a two-run homer in the sixth, and later Mike Murray’s two-out single scored two runs, helped by an error on left fielder Narodowski.

Yakima turned in a sloppy effort, committing six errors, leading to three unearned runs, and Bears pitchers walked four and hit three batters.

Salem-Keizer’s bullpen, meanwhile, was nearly flawless. Brian Maloney allowed a hit and a run while walking four in 12/3 innings of work, but then Brennan Flick threw two hitless innings with a walk, Jack Snodgrass threw 11/3 hitless innings with a walk, and Phil McCormick threw a hitless ninth, walking one, to earn the save.

Yakima outhit the Volcanoes 11-8, with Carter Bell, Garrett Weber, Tyler Bream and Steven Rodriguez collecting two hits each.
