Notes
IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING: Those in search of an answer as to why lights-out closer Kable Hogben was still with the Bears need wonder no longer. The lanky Australian has been promoted to South Bend of the long-season Class A Midwest League.
After a 2010 season in which Hogben compiled a team-high 10 saves and a 0.72 earned run average, he this year went 1-0 with one save over nine appearances and 17 innings, allowing only six hits while striking out 27 and walking only one. His ERA was 0.53.
NEWCOMERS: Outfielder Marc Bourgeois and infielder Carter Bell were activated for Wednesday night’s game. Bourgeois, from Granby, Quebec, and free-agent signee, started Yakima’s first seven games and batted .267 with three doubles and a triple before being removed from the roster for undisclosed reasons.
Bell, from Victoria, British Columbia, was an 11th-round draftee last month from Oregon State.
Both were in Wednesday night’s lineup — Bourgeois batting fifth and playing left field and Bell hitting second and playing third base.
THE FIRST HALF FROM HERE: The Bears have 13 games left in the first half of the Northwest League season, seven at home and six on the road.
Having gone 1-7 on a just-completed eight-game road trip, Yakima will host Salem-Keizer for five before traveling to Tri-City and Boise for three contests in each city. The second of three home meetings with Tri-City on July 25 will conclude the first half.
When July ends, the Bears will have played 19 of 30 games away from home. Next month they’ll play 18 of 29 in Yakima County Stadium and will follow by playing three regular season-ending games in September at home.
FALLOUT FROM INDIANS-C’S DUSTUP: Monday’s bench-clearning fight between Spokane and Vancouver at the Indians’ Avista Stadium has resulted in six players being suspended and 51 fined — both believed to be Northwest League records.
After a mild confrontation a day earlier, a full-fledged brawl erupted when Spokane’s Rougned Odor and Vancouver’s Shane Opitz exchanged words following Odor’s attempted breakup of a double play by sliding aggressively into second base.
Indians’ pitcher Matt West was reportedly dealt the heaviest punishment by league president Bob Richmond, a six-game suspension.
The teams meet again on Aug. 2 in Vancouver.
