Pak suffers a one-two punch

Bellingham hits, pitches way past Pepsi Pak ||

SELAH, Wash. — With two days down and two teams gone from the Senior Legion state baseball tournament, two things reverberated loudest at Carlon Park on Thursday.

The Twin City Titans, winners of 50 games and a strong pre-tournament favorite, were quickly shown the door and Bellingham, wow, those boys can sure pitch.

And hit. Bellingham can do that, too.

The Yakima Valley Pepsi Pak got a full dose of Bellingham’s full power in the nightcap as the Post 7 crew rolled up 15 hits while two pitchers struck out 14 in an 11-3 winner’s-bracket victory.

What was a two-run margin after seven innings became a runaway when the Northwest League champs plated six runs — all with two outs — in the bottom of the eighth.

Bellingham and the Spokane Bandits, the tournament’s final two unbeaten teams, play today at 4 p.m. Two more teams will be eliminated today and Yakima Valley will try to avoid that fate at 7 p.m. against the Spokane Blue Devils.

Bellingham starter Tanner Olson, who threw a regional shutout last week against Centralia, cruised out to a 4-0 lead before the Pak eventually wore him down and rallied within 4-3 with two outs in the top of the seventh inning.

But coach Don Hennigs summoned Hayden Knight and he slammed the door by retiring all seven batters he faced, five by strikeout.

“Tanner’s been our No. 2 all season and he was pretty solid today, but the Paks made some good swings,” Hennigs said. “We’ve always liked our pitching depth and Hayden came in and did a great job. The strikeout to end the seventh (with two Pak base runners) — that was huge.”

Equally big was how Bellingham responded to Yakima Valley’s rally, getting a run back for a 5-3 lead on Bobby Funkhouser’s two-out RBI single.

“We added six (runs) late, but I told the guys the biggest spot in the game was that run in the seventh,” Hennigs said. “They got back in it, but we answered back. This team has done a great job of that all season.”

Olson, a lanky 6-foot-3 right-hander, totaled nine strikeouts and Knight added five. In four postseason games, Bellingham pitchers have put up zeros in 29 of 33 innings.

Olson gave up just one hit in the first five innings, but the Pak finally broke through with Andrew Gonzalez’s solo homer to lead off the sixth. Kurt Lindemann added a two-run double in the seventh to cut the margin to 4-3, and YV chased Olson when Gonzalez drew a two-out walk.

But on came Knight, who not only stopped the rally with a strikeout but fanned the side in the eighth.

“We’ve beaten two very good teams from two great programs so far,” said Hennigs, whose team opened Tuesday with a 14-4 win over the Kennewick Bandits. “We’re playing our best ball at the perfect time.”

Scoring 10 of its 11 runs with two outs, Bellingham got three hits from John Albert, Zach Slesk and Ben Wilson and has 33 hits in two games.

Yakima Valley (28-16) played today’s loser-out opponent, the Spokane Blue Devils (31-18), twice in Selah during the Hagert tournament last month and split, winning 6-5 and falling 7-6.

Spokane Bandits rally past Hanford

July 28, 2011 by

SELAH, Wash. — Hanford’s eight and a half innings of top-notch baseball was all washed away in a stunning ninth-inning rally by Spokane.

Scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth, the Bandits overtook Hanford 7-6 in Wednesday’s first winner’s bracket game at Carlon Park.

Spokane, which scored six of its runs in the final three innings, started the ninth with a single from Gerhard Muelheims and a double by Beau Bozett.

David McNeil then hit a grounder, with Hanford throwing home but not in time to get Muelheims. One out later, Cameron Poland hit an RBI single to tie the game, and, after an intentional walk, Matthew Miller hit a sacrifice fly to center to plate McNeil with the winning run.

Muelheims and Bozett were both 3 for 5, and Kyle Peckham was 2 for 4 including a solo homer.

A.J. Hoskins and George Steele both had three hits for Hanford.

Bears’ early momentum fades in loss to S-K

July 28, 2011 by

KEIZER, Ore. — Yakima let an early lead slip away and then had a late comeback thwarted as Salem-Keizer rallied to win the series opener between the teams Wednesday night.

After the Bears tied the score with a run in the top of the eighth — and missed a chance for more — Salem-Keizer’s Joseph Staley hit a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the inning to give the Volcanoes a 5-4 victory.

Yakima, which fell to 13-27 overall and 0-2 in the Northwest League’s second half, grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the second, highlighted by Tyler Bream’s two-run home run.

But Salem-Keizer got a run back in the bottom of the frame, and then scored once more in the fifth and took a 4-3 lead in the sixth on Garrett Buechele’s two-run homer.

Things stayed that way until the eventful eighth.

Yakima looked to have a shot at a big inning as it loaded the bases with no outs on a Garrett Weber walk, a Carter Bell single, and Steven Rodriguez being hit by a pitch.

Marc Bourgeois followed with a RBI fielder’s-choice grounder that forced Rodriguez at second. Bourgeois then stole second, putting runners at second and third with one out, but David Narodowski struck out and Bream popped out to first.

In the bottom half of the inning, Joseph Panik and Brett Krill hit one-out singles. One out later, Staley ripped his double to left, scoring Panik, but Krill was thrown out at the plate by Bourgeois.

Yakima threatened in the ninth as Justin Hilt drew a leadoff walk and Westley Moss hit a one-out single, but Weber flew out to center and Bell struck out.

Bream and Moss had two hits each to pace Yakima’s nine-hit effort.
