Cross Country: Cadets on home turf

Eisenhower boys seeking a Sunfair repeat ||

YAKIMA, Wash. — Eight hours of cross country races, a record 106 teams and nearly 2,500 runners and four decades of history.

Saturday’s Sunfair Invitational has almost too much to offer, and the 38th annual edition at Franklin Park has the makings of one of the best ever.

Meet director Phil English would probably like to just step back and watch the beast he has created unfold, but he’s in charge of one of the event’s main storylines as his Eisenhower’s boys seek to repeat as champion on their home course.

It takes seven runners at the top of their game to capture a Sunfair team title, and it takes a supreme effort over a challenging course to win any flight much less the elite features, the girls going at 3 p.m. followed by the boys finale at 3:30.

Here’s a look at who those winners might be on Saturday. For more detailed information, see sunfairrun.com

Cadets defending their park

Eisenhower’s boys have gone 3-0 in September invitationals and they’re ranked No. 1 in Class 4A with unbeaten Santos Vargas at the front of the pack.

The Cadets have four veterans who ran varsity flights last year, but they will also have two untested freshmen in the first three flights.

Two of those veterans — Vargas and Jaziel Rodriguez — won their flights last year, sparking Eisenhower to a three-point victory over Kamiakin.

It could well come down to those two again.

The Braves dominated the New Balance Festival in Oregon two weeks ago, claimed six of the first seven spots in an all-CBBN 3A meet and are led by standout Anthony Armstrong.

“With the unusual format (scoring seven runners rather than five), it puts a little pressure on our younger kids,” English acknowledged. “But we’ve been racing well, getting better each week and we expect a good day. It’s a great test to see where we are at the halfway point in the season.”

Eisenhower’s girls, fifth a year ago, are ranked second in 4A and will be up against the top three 3A teams — Glacier Peak, Shadle Park and Kamiakin.

Girls elite race just that

Last year’s final girls flight saw three runners dip under 18 minutes for the first time on the three-mile layout. This year could be deeper and faster.

Defending champion Amy-Eloise Neale of Glacier Peak got most of her 17-second victory margin last year over the final mile and she is fresh off winning the Stanford Invitational, covering 5,000 meters in 17:09 a week ago.

Neale, who competed in the World Junior track and field meet last summer, is the clear favorite but she has two Spokane runners — North Central’s Katie Knight and Shadle Park’s Kendra Weitz — who have become 3A rivals pushing each other to national-caliber heights.

In the 3,200 state track final last May, all three crushed the existing meet record with Neale (10:12.33) leading Knight (10:15.02) and Weitz (10:20.09). Two days later, Neale edged Knight in the 1,600, 4:46.56 to 4:46.83.

Eastside boys dominance

After getting your breath back from watching the loaded girls finale, get ready for a boys showdown that will feature three eastside aces who could threaten to break 15 minutes, a barrier broken only five times in Sunfair history.

Kamiakin’s Anthony Armstrong, Mead’s Andrew Gardner and Wenatchee’s Jacob Smith all have the credentials to do it, and Armstrong is at the top of the list.

After leading the state last spring in the 1,600 (4:10.64) and 3,200 (8:57.36), Armstrong has cruised to three wins to start his cross country season, including a 15:00 victory over 5,000 meters at the New Balance meet.

Gardner, who bolted onto the scene two years ago with a state freshman track record of 9:01 in the 3,200, announced his fitness with a scorching 14:38 win over three miles at the Mountain West Classic in Montana last week.

Smith has already been to Franklin Park this season, winning a CBBN 4A meet in 15:29, and last week he claimed the Nike Pre-Nationals title in Oregon, running 5,000 in 15:10.

Panthers back in the park

Gardner’s presence represents a return to Sunfair by the Mead boys, who once gave new meaning to the word dominance.

The Panthers from Spokane aren’t currently at that level but they’re still pretty darn good, ranking fifth in 4A.

Running in their trademark neon green jerseys, Mead’s boys won nine consecutive Sunfair titles from 1988 to 1996 and recorded a perfect score of seven in ‘93 and ‘96.

In the program’s last visit here, the Panthers won their 11th Sunfair title in 2002.

Jesuit going for first threepeat

No girls program has ever won three straight Sunfair titles, but Jesuit of Portland is going to take a shot at it on Saturday.

The Crusaders from Oregon set an all-time low girls score last year with 11 points, and they tallied just 12 points in ‘09.

But Jesuit graduated five big-time seniors, including 2009 Sunfair champ Annamarie Maag, and extending its streak of nine consecutive Oregon 6A state titles may be a tall order. South Eugene, one of the teams hoping to end that run, is in the field Saturday.

Local report: CWU soccer wins third straight

September 30, 2011 by

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Carson McKole scored the tying goal and assisted on a go-ahead tally Thursday as Central Washington won its third straight GNAC women’s soccer match, 3-1 over Northwest Nazarene.

West Valley graduate Hillary Franks also had an assist as the Wildcats improved to 4-1-0 in conference play and 5-2-2 overall.

After Nazarene (2-3-0, 4-5-0) got on the board via Celina Mortensen’s goal, McKole tied it with an unassisted tally three minutes later to ignite a surge in which CWU would score three times in six minutes.

Franks was credited with an assist on Central’s second score, which came on an NNU own goal in the 16th minute. McKole then assisted Amy Pate’s score in the 18th minute, which ended the scoring.

Kori Butterfield made six saves for the Wildcats, who host Montana State Billings on Saturday.

Prep report: Run defense on Davis’ to-do list

September 30, 2011 by

YAKIMA, Wash. — With its thrilling overtime win over Richland freshly in hand, Davis’ unbeaten football team quickly got a firm and urgent message from coach Rick Clark.

Back to work.

The Pirates, a new addition to this week’s 4A state poll at No. 10, have a trip to winless Walla Walla today and the coaching staff wants all eyes on this game and not ahead to next week’s rivalry clash with Eisenhower.

Regardless of Wa-Hi’s 0-4 record, Davis needs work on its run defense and the Blue Devils have the league’s second-leading running back in Jonah Hoe.

“It’s a glaring area of need and we’re working on it,” Clark said. “I think we’re the worst team in the league and that obviously needs to improve. That is a focus this week.”

Overall, Davis ranks third in defense but that’s because its secondary is so good, relinquishing just 71 passing yards a game. On the ground, however, the Pirates are yielding a porous 212 yards.

Richland did much better than that, chewing up 315 yards of Zaepfel Stadium grass, but Davis offset that with a remarkable array of big plays. The average distance of Deion Wright’s five touchdown passes was 48 yards, and I’m still trying to figure out that first one — Cooper Kupp’s grab-and-dash 73-yarder that deflected off two players before he snagged it.

More important than any statistic was Davis’ grit, which overcame three deficits and a Richland no-huddle offense that always seemed on the verge of simply wearing down the Pirates.

“These guys can play with their backs to the wall,” said Clark, whose program is 12-4 over its last 16 games. “We made plays when we had to, and that’s the big thing about this group. For the most part, we played the whole game Friday with our backs to the wall.”

After Friday’s Homecoming victory, the Pirates got more good news concerning senior Murray Bradley, who was taken away in an ambulance just before overtime started. The two-way starting lineman suffered from abdominal cramps, Clark said, and was released from hospital care later that night.

Another note about Friday’s win was how gratifying it was for the seniors, many of whom two years ago lost back-to-back overtime games against Eisenhower and Pasco.

Richland gets no break this week. The Bombers host fifth-ranked Chiawana tonight.

Ike faces 4-0 Panthers

For the second week in a row, an unbeaten CBBN 4A team is coming to Zaepfel Stadium tonight. This time it’s Eisenhower’s turn to step up.

Coming off their 55-31 non-league win over Evergreen in Vancouver last week, the Cadets face a young Wenatchee squad that has picked up steam each week. The Panthers have enjoyed some fortuitous scheduling — their last three opponents are a combined 0-12 — but 4-0 is still 4-0 and that should keep Ike from looking ahead to next week’s Davis showdown.

All of Wenatchee’s primary playmakers in last week’s 51-26 win over Moses Lake are sophomores — RB Spencer Smith, WR Isaiah Brandt-Sims and QB Dillon Sugg.

Keep an eye on No. 21, Brandt-Sims. He won the Class 4A state 100- and 200-meter track titles last spring as a freshman.

Ike’s offense is averaging 41.5 points through four games, which is ahead of pace for the 1964 school record of 38.7 over nine games.

What a debut

Off to an 0-4 start and battling injuries, Highland’s football has obviously had its struggles in the first month. But a shuffling in the lineup produced a couple of big numbers in last week’s 49-14 loss to La Salle.

Sophomore quarterback Parker Stohr passed for 254 yards and nearly all of that went to junior Trey Trepanier in his first start at wide receiver. Trepanier had been the quarterback.

“It’s something that we’ve been looking forward to, getting Parker and Trey on the field together,” said coach Ryan Scott. “It’s been a great competition at quarterback. Injuries helped lead to this, but Trey made the move (to receiver) and had a great night.”

Trepanier’s 233 yards on seven catches is a school record, topping Scott Twardoski’s 202 yards (also with seven catches) in 1989 against Cle Elum.

Runaway Rams

While West Valley’s unbeaten volleyball team finished the first swing through CBBN 3A play with a comfortable two-match lead, there were some interesting developments going on behind the Rams and in the 4A league.

Bouncing back from two straight losses, Southridge defeated Kamiakin for the first time in the Braves’ gym on Tuesday. It may have been a sweep but it was a battle, the Suns winning 25-21, 29-27, 26-24.

In the 4A league, Chiawana finished the first half 6-0 with the program’s first win — home or away — over Richland. The Riverhawks prevailed 25-18, 27-29, 25-18, 26-24 to end Richland’s 18-match win streak in league play.

West Valley, meanwhile, built records of 7-0 in league and 13-0 overall heading into the second round of CBBN play on Thursday. The third-ranked Rams, who are 33-2 in individual games, could get a look at No. 1 Mt. Spokane in the Spokane Crossover on Oct. 8.
