Volleyball: Rams roll to 29-0 record

West Valley wins district championship ||
YAKIMA, Wash. — Don’t serve Linnea Phillips short. It may seem tempting since West Valley’s libero covers the backrow so well, but even a rain-drop softy 20 feet in front of her probably won’t find the floor.
“I love to dive for the ball,” she said with a smile. “That’s one of my favorite plays.”
Mostly because Phillips can cover areas of a volleyball court that don’t seem coverable, which is standard operating procedure for the unbeaten and top-ranked Rams, who did Saturday what they’ve done all season.

Win going away.
With all facets of its game geared up and at full speed, West Valley captured the CBBN 3A district title on its home floor, sweeping Kamiakin 25-14, 25-19, 25-19 in the semifinals and Kennewick 25-16, 25-15, 25-11 in the title match.
“When you’re the team to beat you have to be ready for everybody’s best shot,” said WV coach Katie Hinckley. “Today we handled that real well. We were focused and ready to go.”
While pushing their season record to 29-0, the Rams were not seriously pressed in any phase. Morgan McDowell once again led the outside offense with 35 kills in the two matches, Sarah Joffs and Hannah Marang were formidable in the middle, setter Julia Nathe put together 67 assists and Phillips had 46 digs.
“People say the target is on us but we try to turn that around,” Phillips said. “We’re not playing afraid to lose. We’re always giving 100 percent and fighting for every point. That’s our game.”
After outlasting Southridge in five games in the other semifinal, Kennewick opened with a pesky effort that saw the Lions that a 10-6 lead in the first game of the final. But with Carly Riehl serving, the Rams forged ahead with a 7-0 run and they never trailed for the rest of the match.
In the final game, Kennewick was within 11-7 when the 6-foot-1 Joffs took over with two kills and two blocks during a dominant rotation through the front line. When she exited the Rams were up 18-9.
“I liked our consistency today,” Hinckley noted. “That’s the strength of this team — we don’t have many lows.”
West Valley will enjoy the comfort of its own gym for another week with the regional finals coming to town next Saturday. The Rams have a first-round bye and will play in Saturday’s semifinals at 1 p.m. against the winner of Tuesday’s North Central-Kamiakin match.
Second-ranked Mt. Spokane is the GSL’s top seed and also has a first-round bye. The Wildcats will play in Saturday’s second semifinal at 3 p.m. against the winner of Tuesday’s Kennewick-Southridge match.
The top three advance to state.
“We’re playing together so well now, we’re like a family,” Phillips said. “We’re excited about next week and another chance to play Mt. Spokane.”

Kudos to local gridders; Reflections on a great World Series
October 29, 2011 by Roger Underwood
First things first, while reflecting on a memorable week of sports highlighted by a classic World Series.
Congratulations to both Eisenhower and Davis on stellar football seasons that have landed both teams in the Class 4A postseason mix.
Some considered the Cadets to be a year away from being a serious player in the CBBN 4A with 22 non-seniors on their 38-player roster, but here they are with a solid second-place standing behind unbeaten and third-ranked Chiawana and a six-game winning streak.
Stellar play at the skill positions plus the emergence of a dominant offensive line, as detailed by Scott Spruill in his account of Friday night’s rout of Walla Walla, have made Ike’s attack especially formidable.
And Davis has fought through a rash of injuries that might have finished a lesser team to win six games.
But while I’m at it, kudos are in order for all local teams that have won championships — Prosser in the CWAC (the Mustangs have developed an imposingly balanced offense under coach Benji Sonnichsen); Cle Elum in the SCAC West (the Warriors running game is uber impressive); and White Swan in the Central Washington 2B (playing a tough non-league schedule clearly paid off for the Cougars).
Best of luck in the playoffs, guys, but also take time to enjoy the moment. Championships are not easy to come by — just ask Central Washington’s Blaine Bennett.
Or the Texas Rangers’ Ron Washington.
I genuinely enjoyed the recently-concluded Series, especially the repeated rallies of Thursday night by St. Louis that made the Cardinals’ Game 7 win seem almost anticlimactic.
Almost.
There is nothing in sports, at any level, like a deciding game, and this Series realized my first wish by going the distance. And while I have a high level of respect for Washington and Nolan Ryan, I was also hoping Tony La Russa, Albert Pujols and the Cardinals would prevail — for my parents, who were lifelong St. Louis fans, if nothing else.
My next hope is that Albert does what’s best for his legacy if not his wallet, and stays in St. Louis.
FROM THE QUOTE FILE
“I’ve had plenty of days of my life where I thought I wouldn’t be even close to being a big leaguer. I’m here because of everybody around me. They’ve put so much trust in me to accomplish not only baseball but just stuff in life, and to do this is — I’m just full of joy, finally.”

A fine line for Ike
October 29, 2011 by Scott Spruill
Cadets’ high-powered offense helped along by stellar front ||
YAKIMA, Wash. — Eisenhower’s offensive glory boys were at it again Friday night, tearing up and down Zaepfel Stadium’s turf like it was downhill and wide open.
Which means Kaleb Garza and his plow-horse boys had another solid day at the office, protecting their prolific quarterback and paving the way for their irrepressible running back.
“Right now, the way we’re playing, teams don’t know what’s coming,” said Garza, Ike’s senior center. “We’re executing everything just about perfect.”

That’s the way it looked from the trenches, the sidelines, the bleachers and any direction on Friday as the Cadets flew to a 53-3 victory over Walla Walla to close out CBBN 4A play with their sixth straight win.
Quarterback Kolney Cassel threw for 260 yards and five touchdowns — three to sophomore Ridge Harmon — and running back Trevon Harris ran for a season-high 196 yards to keep the Cadets’ momentum in high gear heading into next week’s trip to Spokane for a regional playoff crossover against Ferris.
Ike’s steamrolling offense, which scored touchdowns on four of its first five possessions and finished with 480 yards, has obviously sustained such speed with its skill players but the offensive line has been a huge revelation and the power behind the big numbers.
“I knew we were going to have a winning season, and maybe a little better if things went well. But this is crazy,” said senior Jacob Herr, Garza’s wingman at left guard. “It feels great the way we’ve been moving the ball, getting up and down the field. It feels like we can do anything.”
Garza and Herr were starters on the offensive live last year, and senior tackle Mike Jones joined them with experience as a defensive starter.
Their mentorship of the younger side of the line — junior tackle Dylan Rowden and sophomores Miguel Mendoza (guard) and Andy Soto (tight end) — have turned a unit with several question marks at the beginning of the season into the engine that drives the CBBN’s best offense.
“If we protect Kolney, he can make a lot of plays,” said Garza, who makes all the snaps in Ike’s shotgun-style Pistol offense formation. “And if we make the blocks for Tre, we’re even tougher to stop. That’s what’s exciting about the way we’re playing — we’ve got a lot of ways to make big plays.”
Cassel bounced back easily from missing last week’s game with a mild concussion, connecting on 16 of 25 passes with scoring strikes to Harmon (7, 11, 34 yards), Denzel Jones (71) and Darius Pati (5). Jones also returned an interception for a score and had over 100 yards in punt returns.
Harris and Jones have now scored 20 touchdowns each.
“The great thing about this group is that in (nine) games they’ve only given up four sacks,” said Ike head coach Dan Eyman, whose offensive line coach is Matt Keeler. “That’s pretty incredible considering how much we throw the ball.”
That’s 279 passing plays in nine games.
“That’s our job,” Garza said. “and we love it.”
Eisenhower (5-1, 8-1) had already locked up the CBBN’s No. 2 seed in next Friday’s 4A regional playoff crossovers and will take on GSL runner-up Ferris (8-1) at Joe Albi Stadium. The Ike-Ferris matchup will start at 8 p.m. as the second game of a doubleheader.
GSL champ Mead (8-1) will play in the first game at 5:30 p.m. against the CBBN’s No. 3 seed, which will be the winner of Tuesday’s tiebreaker between Davis, Wenatchee and Richland.
