Cougars roll to conference crown

White Swan claims first outright title since 1962 ||
WHITE SWAN, Wash. — Alex Sampson began what has turned out to be a quite historic White Swan football season with 52 metal staples in his right leg and no certainty whatsoever that he would see the field from anywhere but the sideline.
On Friday night, when he and his Cougar teammates completed their drive to their first outright league title in a half-century, Sampson could see everything.
And, seemingly, do just about anything.

He ran for 173 yards and a touchdown on just seven carries, caught one touchdown pass, threw a touchdown pass and made an interception as White Swan routed Lake Roosevelt 30-0 to cap their unbeaten run through the Central Washington 2B League.
“The most fun thing for me on the football field? Running the ball,” Sampson said with a grin. “I can see the whole field. When I’m the backfield, it’s like I can see the end zone already, like I can see three moves ahead before it happens.
“To be a good running back, you don’t need speed. You just need vision.”
The victory clinched White Swan’s first league title since it finished in a three-way title atop the Valley A League in 1993. The Cougars hadn’t won an outright league title since 1962, when White Swan went 9-0. This year, they went unbeaten (5-0) in league play.
There were no state playoffs in 1962, but this year’s Cougars (6-3 overall) have already assured themselves their first postseason excursion since back-to-back trips in 2008 and 2009. Before that, though, they’ll play a seeding game next weekend against the winner of the Central Washington League’s Northern Division, which will be decided in a three-way playoff Tuesday involving Brewster, Oroville and Manson.
The ultra-explosive Sampson almost didn’t get the chance to help the Cougars make their title run. After the compression syndrome that required surgery on that right leg last year, doctors initially told him he would likely miss the entire season. He was in the lineup by the second game.
On Friday, Sampson helped the Cougars win an absolutely lopsided game in which the time of possession was even more one-sided — weirdly enough, though, in Lake Roosevelt’s favor.
The Raiders’ patient single-wing offense had the ball for 38 of the game’s 48 minutes, but had no points to show for 9- and 7 1/2-minute drives. White Swan, meanwhile, was all quick-strike, with touchdown runs by Niko Nanez and J.J. Nanez and Sampson’s heroics, which included his 51-yard touchdown bomb to Nathan Nobbs that began as a reverse.
“(The Raiders’) power game, grinding it out with that three yards and a cloud of dust, is not always easy to stop,” White Swan coach Andy Bush said when told of his team’s minimal time of possession. “That’s to their credit — and maybe a little bit to our explosiveness. We definitely have some power — some thunder and lightning.”
For the Cougars’ league foes, there’s not much to look forward to. While a handful of White Swan’s best defenders are seniors, most of their offensive firepower will return next year.
“I didn’t really know what to expect at the beginning of the year, but after we got started I realized we had something,” said linebacker Roy Watlamet, one of the team’s top defenders and — like fellow linebacker Derrick Nanez, who suffered a dislocated elbow on Friday — one of the few irreplaceable seniors in the Cougar lineup.
“It feels good,” Watlamet said. “I told myself when I was younger I’d help bring something good to White Swan.”
Consider it done.

Warriors wrest title from Zillah
October 29, 2011 by YH-R Sports
CLE ELUM, Wash. — For three years, Zillah has ruled the SCAC West thanks in large measure to a punishing ground game.
Friday, Cle Elum used that same formula to end the Leopards’ stranglehold on the West.
Mitchell Millsap ran for 202 yards and a touchdown, Michael Newman added 113 rushing yards and three total touchdowns, and fifth-ranked Cle Elum broke away in the second half for a 44-13 victory.
“It’s a big win for our program,” Warriors coach Tony Kretschman said. “Zillah’s got a good program. We’re happy we were able to come through and win the league.”
Cle Elum finished 6-0 in the West and improved to 8-1 overall heading into next week’s SCAC crossover game against River View at Cle Elum. Zillah fell to 4-2 in the West and 6-3 overall but still locked up the West’s No. 2 seed and a home game next week against Burbank.
After a close first half, in which the Warriors led 17-7, Cle Elum took over in the third quarter, scoring four touchdowns, including one from all three facets of the game.
Mislay started things with a 31-yard scoring run, and Newman later scored on a 6-yard run.
After Zillah scored to pull within 31-13, Newman returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a TD, and Ryan Smart capped the Warriors’ scoring by returning a fumble 15 yards for a score.
Behind Millsap and Newman, Cle Elum rolled up 407 rushing yards, with those two accounting for 315 on just 23 carries — a 13.7 per-carry average. Jake Gall added another 61 yards on 10 carries.
“Our running game came up big,” Kretschman said. “We take pride in running the ball.”
Things started nicely for Zillah as Kurt Calhoun returned the opening kickoff 85 yards for a score, but little went the Leopards’ way after that.
Zillah’s running game was held relatively in check, collecting 138 yards, and the Leopards managed just one pass completion for 34 yards on the rainy night.
Wright, Kupp set records in victory
October 29, 2011 by YH-R Sports
HERMISTON, Ore. — Behind school-record efforts from Deion Wright and Cooper Kupp, the Davis Pirates emphatically ended their three-game losing streak.
Wright threw for 490 yards and seven touchdowns and Kupp had a school-record 230 receiving yards and four touchdowns Friday night as Davis rolled past Hermiston 61-41 in the non-league contest.
Davis (6-3 overall) will take part in a tiebreaker with Wenatchee and Richland on Tuesday night at Moses Lake to determine the CBBN 4A’s Nos. 3-5 seeds. Friday, Wenatchee lost 27-13 to Chiawana, and Richland beat Moses Lake 34-26, leaving all three times tied for third at 3-3 in league.
The Pirates will head into that tiebreaker with some momentum thanks to their huge offensive effort Friday.
Wright surpassed his own school record for passing yards in a game — a 462-yard effort at Eastmont in the first game this season — and the seven touchdowns matches the second-best effort in Valley history and is just one behind the all-time record set by Prosser’s Kellen Moore.
Wright, who finished 18 of 28, averaged 27.2 yards per completion.
Kupp, who rolled up his yardage total in just nine catches, had TD grabs of 65, 41, 10 and 13 yards.
Wright also threw touchdown passes to Carlos Perea-Vijarro, a 65-yarder on the Pirates’ first offensive play of the game, Austin Lynn (10 yards) and Addison Mercer (16).
Running back Austin Wagner rushed for 184 yards on 16 carries, including scoring runs of 84 and 6 yards.
Hermiston’s Bobby Adams ran 46 times for 260 yards and three touchdowns.

Who deserves the Week 9 Game Ball?

College football: Potent WTAM awaits Wildcats
October 29, 2011 by Roger Underwood
YAKIMA, Wash. — There is a specific reason that Blaine Bennett is convinced his team must play its best game of the season today in order to win.
It’s because Bennett is convinced that West Texas A&M is the best team his Central Washington Wildcats will have opposed when the squads kick off at 4 p.m. (PDT) in Kimbrough Memorial Stadium.
“They’re better than Humboldt (State) and they’re better than (Texas A&M) Kingsville,” Bennett said Thursday night, referring to teams that have dealt the Wildcats three of their four losses. “I’ve seen them all on tape, and West Texas A&M is the best team our players will see this season.”
So the order is tall for CWU (3-4), which after losing to Humboldt for the second time this fall and seeing its hopes for a third-straight GNAC title end, set its sights on a 10th straight winning season.
Winning today against a 5-2 WTAM squad that is ranked 20th nationally and sixth regionally seems clearly to be Central’s tallest remaining hurdle. The Buffaloes of Canyon, Texas, which is just south of Amarillo, have lost only to NCAA Division I foe Colorado State (26-24), and to Abilene Christian, the latter squad ranked 13th in the nation in Division II.
“They’re very potent offensively,” Bennett said. “They put up a lot of impressive numbers.”
Among them are 466 yards and 35.9 points per game. Sophomore quarterback Dustin Vaughan has passed for 300.4 yards per outing and has thrown for 17 touchdowns with only three interceptions.
Four of his receivers have at least 25 catches, led by senior Brittan Golden with 32 receptions for 595 yards and five scores.
Bennett also spoke highly of junior running back Khiry Robinson, who has averaged 7.5 yards per rush.
“What we’ll have to do,” Bennett said, “is cover well in the secondary and slow them down. We also need to do a better job of securing the football than we did last week, even though we still won, and we have to convert third down situations better to keep our offense on the field and theirs off it.”
To that end, Central will run quarterback Jose Mohler less than it tried to do last week in the junior transfer’s first start at Dixie State. Its efforts to get Mohler outside to utilize his speed and agility were largely unsuccessful.
“We weren’t efficient trying to get Jose out on the edge.” Bennett said, “But he did throw the ball well, so we’ll try to mix the run and the way we’ve tried to in the past.”
Central will be without starting offensive left tackle Jon Murbach and reserve linebacker Abraham Muheize, who have been lost for the season with arm injuries.
The Wildcats will visit Simon Fraser next week before closing their season at home on Nov. 12 against Dixie State. They have not had a losing season since 2001 and haven’t lost five games in a season since 2006.
