Prep girls basketball roundup: Gruber helps Ellensburg to win

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Senior post Nathalie Gruber put together 15 points and eight rebounds to help a balanced Ellensburg crew rally for a 48-45 victory over Selah in CWAC girls basketball Thursday night.
Melanie Swanson and Alexa Orcutt chipped in 13 points apiece as the Bulldogs picked up their first conference win.
Tori Dexter and Cheyenne Merritt led Selah with 11 points each.
EAST VALLEY 56, EPHRATA 40: At Ephrata, Mikaela Zimmer tallied 12 points and Yasi Mohsenian and Tassia Merkle added 11 apiece as the Red Devils moved to 6-0 in league and 8-0 for the season.
GRANDVIEW 52, TOPPENISH 33: At Toppenish, Wash. Payton Parrish’s big 18-point, 18-rebound double-double led the Greyhounds, who held Top-Hi to eight points in the middle quarters.
Mikaela Espinoza also scored 18 points for Grandview.
PROSSER 49, QUINCY 23: At Prosser, Wash., Karissa Flores turned in a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds and Sydney Mercer hauled down 12 boards for the Mustangs.

EISENHOWER 43, EATONVILLE 39: At Yakima, Wash., senior Elizabeth Armenta’s 11 points and eight rebounds helped the Cadets avenge a loss to Eatonville from Wednesday night.
Eisenhower (2-7), which rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit, made 12 of 16 free throws in the final period with Devin Guerra-Burnett going 6-for-6.
LAKE CITY 72, DAVIS 40: At Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Jasymn Smith set a school record with nine 3-pointers and scored 29 points to lead the Idaho team (8-5).
Cierra Juarez paced Davis (3-5) with nine points.
CLE ELUM 45, KITTITAS 40: At Kittitas, Wash., Carlee Creager broke loose for 24 points for the Warriors (5-4), who rallied in the second half.

SunDome Shootout roundup: Slack, Pascal lead Leopards past Rodgefield

YAKIMA, Wash. — Robert Slack scored 18 points and Derrell Pascal added 15 to lead Zillah to a 53-42 victory over Ridgefield on the first day of the 12th annual SunDome Shootout prep basketball tournament on Thursday.
The tournament continues today with another seven boys games and seven girls games.
Despite producing just four points in the opening period, the Leopards woke up and took the lead with a 20-point third quarter to stretch their season record to 7-1.
Zillah will play White River today at 6 p.m.
GRANGER 51, COLVILLE 35: Andrew Reddout and Esau Cervantes scored 15 and 14 points, respectively, for the unbeaten Spartans, who pulled away with a 20-point third quarter to push their season mark to 8-0.
WHITE SWAN 55, DEER PARK 37: Lawrence Fiander poured in 27 points to help the Cougars improve to 6-1.
Johnny Zuniga chipped in 10 points for White Swan, which held Deer Park to 11 points in the first half.

Cayla Jones added 12 points, hitting 6 of 9 free throws, for the Cougars (6-1), who led 41-24 after three quarters.
LA SALLE 52, VASHON ISLAND 19: Karly Sattler pitched in four 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 18 points for the 6-1 Lightning.
La Salle made six treys overall and connected on 10 of 15 free throws.

Roadrunners outlast YVCC
OREGON CITY, Ore. — Amir Royal and Dabrail Henton scored 20 points each Thursday and Yakima Valley hit the century mark in its Clackamas Holiday Invitational matchup with Linn-Benton.
Unfortunately for the Yaks, the Roadrunners hit the century mark, plus three.
Linn-Benton got 37 points from Joseph Vance and 29 from Brady Brent in a 103-100 triumph over YVCC, improving to 4-6 while the Yaks slipped to 7-5.
Johnnie Diggs came off the bench to score 16 points for Yakima Valley, shich shot 53 percent from the field including 43 percent (10 for 23) from 3-point range.
But YVCC made only 14 of 21 free throws while Linn-Benton converted 24 of 30. Yakima Valley was eliminated .

Defending JC champs down Yaks
LONGVIEW, Wash. — Simone Jordan scored 17 points and Ashley Swetzof came off the bench for 15, but Yakima Valley lost sharpshooter Brittney Newcomb to an ankle injury and was overwhelmed by defending national junior college champion North Idaho 73-53 on Thursday in the Lower Columbia Holiday Classic.
The sixth-ranked Yaks, who meet LCC at 1 p.m. today, slipped to 9-3.
Newcomb, averaging 17.9 points a game and coming off a 31-point performance Wednesday night, suffered an ankle injury during the second half and will be out of action for at least two weeks, according to coach Cody Butler.
YVCC is already missing scoring leader Brandi Henton (24.7), who will have an MRI on her injured right knee Tuesday.

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — With another balanced offensive effort that had four players score in double figures, Davis’ boys defeated Coeur d’Alene 58-50 in Wednesday’s semifinals of the North Idaho College Invitational.
Devonte Luckett led the way with 14 points and was followed closely by aymond Navarro (13), David Trimble (12) and Carlos Perea-Vijarro (11) as the Pirates improved to 6-1.
Trimble turned in a double-double with 11 assists.
Davis will play unbeaten Post Falls (8-0) today at 7:30 p.m. in the title game. Post Falls defeated Lake City 44-37 in Wednesday’s first semifinal.

LONGVIEW — Brittney Newcomb was once again nearly unstoppable on Wednesday, pouring in 31 points and claiming six steals as Yakima Valley’s women rolled to a 66-49 victory over Centralia in the first round of the Lower Columbia Holiday Classic.
Newcomb connected on 12 of 18 shots, including 6 of 8 from 3-point distance, as the sixth-ranked Yaks improved to 9-2 and moved into today’s semifinals at 6 p.m. against North Idaho.
YVCC, which opened a 33-19 lead at halftime, got seven or more points from four other players and eight rebounds apiece from Alex Brewster and Ashley Swetzof.
Sam Zapien chipped in nine points with one of the Yaks’ eight 3-pointers and two blocked shots, and Simone Jordan collected seven points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals.

RICHLAND — With three champions, 11 placers and 2091?2 points, Sunnyside captured the 18-team Winter Cup for the second straight year at Hanford High School on Wednesday.
Isaac Guerrero (138), Isidro Ramirez (145) and Austin Carmen (220) won titles for the Grizzlies, who also had three runner-up finishers.

YAKIMA — The sixth-grade Toppenish Wildcat boys basketball team went undefeated in its age bracket in the ninth annual Bring Your Game tournament in Yakima.
After edging the Wilson Cavs in overtime in the semifinals, Toppenish defeated the Yakima All-Stars 55-23 in the final.
A week earlier, the team took the sixth-grade title in the 21-team Yakima Valley AAU Three Rivers Fall league.
Team members are Hayden Greene, Josue Garcia, Parker Reynolds, Adonis Shaul, Victor Veliz, Kelly Zick, Isaiah Perez, Victor Johnson and Sergio Garcia. The team is coached by James Perez, Daniel Sanchez, and Trevor Greene.

BASKETBALL: The Martin Luther King Community Planning committee is hosting the Martin Luther King Jr. Share The Dream 2012 youth basketball tournament on Jan. 13-15. Kids ages 13-18 will participate on Jan. 14 from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. and on Jan. 15 from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. at Davis High School. Kids ages 12-and-under will participate Jan. 13-15 from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. at OIC Gymnasium. The registration cost is $5 per participant. Registration closes on Jan. 12.
