Local report — Area boxers draw, lose in EQ bouts

January 24, 2012 by

TACOMA, Wash. — Yakima welterweight boxer Nate Serrano suffered his first defeat as a professional while another Yakima welterweight, Randell Corpuz, came away disappointed with a draw at last Saturday’s boxing card at the Emerald Queen Casino in Tacoma.

Serrano forced most of the action in his semi-main event fight against California’s Roberto Crespo, but that didn’t sway the judges. One judge scored the fight a draw at 57-57, while two favored Crespo 58-56, giving him the majority decision and dropping Serrano’s record to 3-1 with two KOs.

Corpuz (2-1-1) was held to a draw by California’s Rashad Hughes in a fight Corpuz felt he had easily won.

“I was the aggressor. He was backing up the whole time,” said Corpuz, who bled heavily for the last two rounds from a head-butt that required five stitches and was also hampered by a hand injury suffered in his previous bout. “Without me, there wouldn’t have been a fight.”

Corpuz’s only setback as a pro came in his debut, losing a close decision to Serrano.
