Today it will be for so much more.

For the second time in four years, Wapato and Grandview will try to eliminate each other from the trophy round in a 9 a.m. loser-out clash today in the Class 2A state tournament.

Battling back from their first-round setbacks, the Greyhounds (17-9) first ousted Tumwater 58-48 on Thursday and then the Wolves (18-6) sent River Ridge packing, 69-54.

“Roy (Garcia) will have his guys ready, we sure know that, and it will be an intense game,” said Wapato coach Adam Strom. “Grandview can run and shoot and they’re quick to the ball — a lot like us.”

Each team won on its home court this season. Grandview prevailed 75-74 on Dec. 11 as Adrian Vela broke loose for 27 points, and Wapato won 68-57 on Jan. 23 with five players scoring in double figures.

In the 2007 state 2A tournament in Tacoma, Grandview eliminated Wapato in the Friday loser-out round, 42-36.

“It will definitely be an exciting game,” Strom said, “but I sure wish it was on Saturday so we’d both get trophies.”

Today’s winner will play the Mount Baker-Clarkston survivor on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. for fifth and eighth place.

NEVER SAY DIE: Early in the second half of their Thursday loser-out girls game, the Kingston Buccaneers were trailing by 20 points against a Squalicum lineup filled with taller, quicker, better-skilled athletes. And to the Buccaneers, that simply didn’t matter.

“We weren’t going down without a fight,” said Elle Sander, one of three Kingston seniors .

And they sure didn’t. Scrapping every step of the way, Kingston actually rallied from that 38-18 deficit to pull within 48-44 with 1:13 remaining before the Storm put the game away at the free-throw line.

“We haven’t had to do that (rally from a large deficit) very often before,” said coach Penny Gienger, “but I knew we had fight in us.”

Gienger, who left a long career as Bainbridge coach after last season, became the Bucs’ coach on an interim basis when the previous coach resigned just days before the season began. Considering the fire the Bucs demonstrated on Thursday, it’s not surprising Gienger holds them in high regard.

“They were a breath of fresh air,” Gienger said. “This was one of my favorite seasons ever.”

YOUTH BOOST: In combating River Ridge’s much taller lineup on Thursday, Wapato’s boys got a nice lift from 6-foot-3 Austin Balderas, a freshman.

Called on with increasing frequency in the postseason, the young post made 3 of 5 field goals, got to the foul line twice and grabbed two rebounds in just over 10 minutes.

“Austin will be something special,” said Wapato coach Adam Strom following his team’s 69-54 win over the Hawks. “In my five years here, he’s our first legit back-to-the-basket post player. He’s got great hands and a good mind for the game — plus he plugs up the middle for us.”

River Ridge had its own impact ninth-grader in guard Brad Wallace, who led the Hawks with 16 points.

IN THE NAME OF THE GRANDFATHER: Burlington-Edison’s Katelyn Mataya plays a mean game of basketball, and it’s in her blood.

Her late grandfather, Frank Mataya Sr., is believed to be the only athlete ever to earn 12 varsity letters at Washington State University, and he did it in an era when freshmen were not eligible for varsity letters. That meant three letters in each of four different sports, if you can believe that — football, basketball, baseball and track.

Katelyn isn’t wasting any seasons herself. Just a sophomore, she already has five varsity letters.

SHORT JUMPERS: The Lynden boys’ 59-31 quarterfinal victory over Deer Park on Thursday was their 100th state tournament victory in school history. “We’re proud to be part of that tradition,” Lynden coach Brian Roper said. “We respect the players and coaches who came before us.” … After six 3-pointers on Wednesday and three on Thursday, Taylor Ulrich, a senior forward on the Squalicum girls team, is 9-for-19 on treys through two games. The tournament record for made 3’s is 13, held by two players, one of whom — Elma’s Katie Colard — has five treys in two games.

Top-ranked River Ridge was shooting just 20 percent and trailing Lynden by seven in the fourth quarter of the 9 a.m. opener when a legacy of sorts stepped up and saved the day for the Hawks.

Junior Kelsey Russell, younger sister of 2008 tournament MVP Sophie Russell, buried two 3-pointers with 4:41 and 3:42 left and Samira McDonald hit another trey with 18 seconds to go as River Ridge rallied for a 47-44 victory.

Prior to those shots, Russell and McDonald were a combined 0-for-10 from 3-point distance. River Ridge (23-1) survived 19.7-percent shooting.

“19.7 — I love that,” said first-year coach Tom Kelly, “because maybe now we’ll start playing well.”

Kelsey Russell started as a freshman with her sister on the ’08 title team, which beat Ellensburg in the final. That was the second straight state championship for Sophie Russell and the Hawks.

Despite graduating three seniors off last year’s title team, Lynden (18-7) was all River Ridge could handle, building a 39-32 lead with six minutes left. Riley Beard, a 6-foot senior post, was a big reason with her 20-point, 11-rebound double-double. Beard was 10-for-10 at the foul line.

MISSING LINKS: One of the top teams in the 2A girls bracket, Burlington-Edison has a 21-3 record and a date in today’s quarterfinals against Eatonville, but the Tigers will have to play without one of the best players — something they have already had to deal with.

Junior guard Kristine Thoe, a 14.0-point scorer during the season, went down with a knee injury in the final two minutes of the Tigers’ 60-44 opening-round victory over Clarkston and had to be carried from the court to the trainers’ work area. She was taken to see a local orthopedic specialist, and the news wasn’t good.

“They’re about 90 percent sure it’s her ACL,” Tigers coach Mike Buckholz said, noting that she was definitely out for the rest of the tournament. “That’s our third one this year.”

Burlington lost shooting guard Molly Breckenridge, who was averaging about nine points, with a torn ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) just before the end of the regular season. Also out with an ACL injury is sophomore forward Tierra Houston, who is still on the state-tourney roster but, like Thoe, isn’t able to play.

NORTHWEST HOOPS: One of the interested observers at the SunDome on Wednesday was Phil Barnhart. Longtime basketball aficionados might know Barnhart as one of the standout players on Cashmere’s 1977 state championship team, which a statewide panel assembled by the Herald-Republic in 2003 voted as the best in Class 1A history. More recently, though, he has become known by a growing number of high school players and college coaches as man behind the NorthwestHoops.com site.

Barnhart started the site about nine years ago, he says, as “a labor of love,” and to help draw attention to the region’s players. “The Northwest was kind of underrecruited when I started,” says Barnhart, whose paying customers (at $24.95 a year) now include recruiters from nearly all of the Pac-10 and Big Sky university staffs. During the season he is often contacted by recruiters from out-of-state universities looking to put together a schedule of games they should attend while on a recruiting swing through the state.

Barnhart’s site ranks teams, as well as players by position and class year. Among this year’s seniors, Barnhart has Ephrata’s Patrick Simon as the No. 3 forward for all classifications, with Burlington-Edison’s Evan Coulter the No. 5 point guard. (At No. 8: Eisenhower’s James Lopez.) He had Squalicum’s Keith Stackhouse alternately at No. 4 and 5 among “combo” (shooting) guards last year before Stackhouse had shoulder surgery that cost him nearly this entire season.

Wonder whether Barnhart knows his stuff? Well, his site’s rankings picked the final 1A boys’ top three — Cascade Christian, Meridian and Vashon — in the preseason.

WINNING UGLY: Sometimes even a win isn’t enough to please a coach who expects more out of his team. Hence, Fife coach Mark Schelbert’s frustration following his team’s 58-55 Wednesday victory over Grandview, vaulting the Trojans into a quarterfinal against third-ranked Burlington-Edison.

“I don’t know if it was butterflies or we were still sleeping, but we were NOT ready to play today,” Schelbert said. “If we don’t remedy that, we’re going to be on the short end against Burlington.”

SHORT JUMPERS: Deer Park’s 64-58 first-round victory over Wapato was the program’s first boys win at state since 1955. The Stags went 0-2 in six appearances since beating Palouse 77-68 in the 1955 Class B state tournament. … First dunk of the day went to 6-foot-3 River Ridge guard Joel King, whose reaction to it was so subtle and unexcited — though it came just a split-second before the buzzer ending the first quarter — that it was fairly obvious it wasn’t his first taste of jam. … Stat of the day had to be Wapato’s Cody Nickoloff, who averaged 3.5 points during the season but on Wednesday shot 7-for-8 from the field, hit his only 3-point attempt and finished with a team-high (and, for Nickoloff, season-high) 17 points. It was only the second time he’d scored in double digits all year. … Lynden’s 39-36 win over River Ridge in the boys tournament was the program’s 14th consecutive first-round state victory. … This is how much Clarkston’s Kellie McCann-Smith wanted to get her team to state: The Nebraska-bound guard scored 38 points on 15-for-21 shooting in the Bantams’ winner-to-state, loser-out game against Cheney. … Squalicum’s Derek Dickerson made eight 3-pointers and scored a career-high 32 points in Saturday’s district win over Burlington-Edison — three days after having his appendix removed.

After Ryan Dornik’s two free throws with 14.8 seconds left put the Yaks in overtime, YVCC committed some untimely turnovers in the extra session and fell to Tacoma, 81-79 in the Toyota Center.

The defeat left Yakima Valley 17-13 and sixth in the tournament. Third-place Tacoma, which came into the tourney ranked second, finished 25-4.

Freshman guard Jordan Kidd, who capped a stellar tournament performance with a game-high 23 points, scored the first basket of overtime but fouled out with 1:36 left.

After the Titans snapped a 74-74 tie by scoring four of the next six points to take the lead, they left YVCC with a chance when Royal Tee Lexing missed two free throws with 12.7 seconds left. Caden Skelton’s deep 3-pointer missed, however, just prior to the buzzer.

“It’s always disappointing when you lose your last game,” Yaks coach Ray Funk said, “but it’s especially disappointing when you lose your last two by two points each.”

Yakima Valley had lost a Monday semifinal to Lower Columbia 72-70.

Terrell Evans came off the bench to score 20 points for the Yaks while Willie Blodgett had 12 and Dornik 11. Chris Holmes led Tacoma with 15 points and 13 boards.

“When you consider where we were at different stages of the season,” Funk said, “sixth in the NWAACC isn’t all bad. And we have some solid guys to build around next year.”

Friday’s NCAA Division II West Region quarterfinal game will mark the first time these programs will face each other in a D-II postseason game.

The 7:30 p.m. contest at Sam Carver Gymnasium in Bellingham will mark the 241st meeting between the schools, but the last time they met in the postseason was 1998, when Central defeated the Vikings 88-84 to qualify for the NAIA National Tournament.

The next season, both teams made the jump to D-II.

Central (16-10) will also be trying to end Western’s recent run of dominance in the series. The Wildcats lead the all-time series 151-89, but they have lost nine of the past 12 meetings, and 10 of the past 11 games played in Bellingham.

That includes two losses to the Vikings (25-5) this season — 84-70 on Jan. 23 in Ellensburg, and 90-86 on Feb. 28 in Bellingham.

Friday’s winner will play the winner of the 5:30 p.m. quarterfinal featuring Cal Poly Pomona (22-6) and Dixie State (20-5) in one of Saturday’s semifinals. The region championship is at 7 p.m. Monday.

The other first-round pairings have GNAC champion Seattle Pacific (22-5) facing Pacific West Conference co-champion Brigham Young-Hawaii (20-5) at 12:30 p.m., and California Collegiate Athletic Association foes Cal State San Bernardino (22-7) and Humboldt State (22-7) meeting at 2:30 p.m.

The other signees are Cedarcrest’s Kori Butterfield, Tumwater’s Caitlin Calnan, Tahoma’s Tarah Duty and Kaylee Osterman, Montesano’s Rebecca Lane, and Kentwood’s Mackenzie Meyers.

“We have found girls who have either played in systems similar to ours, have played together for a long time, or have ties to Central through their coaches,” coach Michael Farrand said.

Keller, an outside midfielder, was a first team all-Columbia Basin selection this past season when she collected 14 goals and 12 assists.

“I have always liked her desire to compete, Farrand said. “She is fast, tenacious, and will bring added depth and competition to the outside midfielder position.”
