Fast-paced Attack scores in Yakima
May 20, 2012 by YH-R Sports
YAKIMA, Wash. — The 10th annual Yak Attack 5v5 Soccer Tournament wrapped up late Sunday afternoon.
The two-day event drew a record 240 teams from the region to Chesterley Park, competing in 21 youth divisions and an adult coed division in a 5-on-5 fast-paced format on smaller fields and with dance music blaring. Chesterley Park was divided into 18 fields, with three of the fields even smaller for the U-9 and U-10 boys and girls divisions.
Yakima Youth Soccer Association is the host for the event and results can be found at www.yakattack.org.
Yaks ride pitching to NWAACC tourney berth
May 20, 2012 by YH-R Sports
Miller, Vetsch quiet Walla Walla in deciding game||
YAKIMA, Wash. — Despite having their backs to the wall the last two days of the East Region playoffs, the Yakima Valley baseball team’s confidence never wavered.
And they needed just one word to explain that unflinching conviction.
Pitching.
The Yaks knew they had plenty of it and despite playing their fifth game in just three days, there was a belief that their hurlers would come through one final time in Sunday’s elimination game against Walla Walla.
And Carson Miller delivered big time — with a little late help from Jacob Vetsch — in leading Yakima Valley to a 4-1 victory and the East Region’s No. 1 seed into the NWAACC Tournament that begins Thursday in Longview.
“It starts with pitching,” Yaks head coach Ken Wilson said. “Anybody on our staff can get the job done and the last two days was a testament to that.
“I have confidence in our pitching, our pitchers have confidence in themselves, and the team has confidence in them.”
For Miller, Sunday’s outing was redemption after the right-hander lasted just two innings in Friday’s 5-1 loss to Walla Walla that dropped the Yaks into the consolation bracket, forcing them to win three games Saturday and Sunday in order to advance.
Miller was brilliant Sunday, allowing eight hits, walking just one and striking out four in his 71?3 innings of work. He threw an even 100 pitches, 68 for strikes.
“His location was working today,” Wilson said. “(Friday) he didn’t have the control he had today.”
Vetsch, a West Valley High graduate, came on to get out of a jam in the eighth, and then was nicked for an unearned run in the ninth before wrapping things up.
Yakima Valley gave Miller some early offense, taking some of the pressure off.
The Yaks scored twice in the first inning, and then added their other two runs in the fourth, and that was enough of a cushion for Miller and Vetsch.
J.R. Weigel went 3 for 4 with a run, Kyle Thompson and Will Chavarria both had two hits and scored a run, and Reid Martinez and Tyler VonDracek each had an RBI.
“It’s about momentum,” Wilson said. “Our pitchers are throwing well and our defense was playing well so we needed to keep building on that. Today, we continued building momentum.”
After routing Walla Walla 11-1 on Saturday to force today’s deciding contest, Wilson said his players didn’t come into Sunday’s game expecting another romp.
“They were pretty focused,” he said. “They knew what the prize was and talked Saturday night about finishing things (Sunday).”
Yakima Valley (33-14) earns the East Region’s No. 1 seed and will open the NWAACC Tournament against Chemeketa.

Baseball: Yaks push it to the limit
May 20, 2012 by YH-R Sports
YAKIMA, Wash. — It’s not often you can cite the top of the first inning as being the turning point in a baseball game, but a case for just that can be made in Yakima Valley’s elimination game against Walla Walla on Saturday.
After dispatching Treasure Valley 6-1 in a loser-out East Region playoff game earlier at Parker Field, the Yaks faced Walla Walla, needing to not only win Saturday but again today to advance to the NWAACC Tournament.
But things didn’t look good out of the gate as Walla Walla loaded the bases with just one out, forcing Yaks coach Ken Wilson to make a pitching change.
Joe Valley dodged the bullet with a strikeout and fielder’s choice groundout, and the Yaks quickly seized on that momentum-shifting escape, scoring twice in the bottom of the frame and 11 times in the first four innings en route to an 11-1 victory.
That sets up a loser-out game between the teams at noon today at Parker Field, with the winner earning the region’s No. 1 seed. The winner will open the NWAACC Tournament against Chemeketa on Thursday in Longview.
“They were confident that we can play with them,” Wilson said of Saturday’s victory. “And what helps build that is to have some quality pitching.”
That pitching depth showed against Walla Walla, with the bullpen working out of two bases-loaded threats in the first three innings.
The second came in the third, with the Yaks up 5-0, as Walla Walla’s first three hitters reached. Wilson called on Seth Darling, who struck out Jarrod Turner, who was also the first-inning strikeout victim, and then got Shane Dixon to fly out to left fielder Kyle Thompson, who then gunned down Neal Schuck at the plate for the inning-ending double play.
That was also Walla Walla’s last meaningful scoring threat, not that it mattered much as Yakima Valley’s offense didn’t slow down until it reached double digits in runs.
Among Yakima Valley’s key hits in those early frames were infield RBI singles by Shawn Wardian in the first and Kyle Thompson in a three-run second, and a two-run single by Jake Fife and an RBI double by Will Chavarria in a four-run fourth that essentially settled matters.
“We had some very solid, clutch hitting,” Wilson said.
The Yaks (32-14) could’ve rolled up even more runs, but Walla Walla managed to turn four double plays in the first four innings.
Thompson and Chavarria both finished 3 for 4, with Thompson scoring twice and Chavarria driving in two, and Fife, Reid Martinez, Tyler Von Dracek and Shawn Wardian each collected two of the Yaks’ 16 hits.
• Against Treasure Valley, Kyle Garvin, Brett Druffel and Jacob Vetsch combined to scatter eight hits.
Cameron Padron led the offense, going 3 for 4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Wardian added a two-run single, and Martinez and J.R. Weigel were both 2 for 4 and combined to score three runs.

Baseball: Rangers return to final four
May 20, 2012 by YH-R Sports
MOSES LAKE, Wash. — After missing out on regionals last season, Naches Valley more than made up for that shortcoming in Saturday’s Class 1A regional tournament.
Getting stellar pitching in both games, including two clutch relief performances from Koleman Johns, the Rangers defeated Orting 9-1 and then edged Colville 4-0 to earn a spot in the state final four, which will be Friday and next Saturday at Yakima County Stadium.
“After not making it to regionals, it was a goal of ours (to get back) this year,” Rangers coach Bill Walker said. “They really have some pretty high expectations and some pretty high goals. Now they get to enjoy another final four.”
The semifinal spot is Naches Valley’s fifth in the past six seasons. The Rangers (21-2) will face Meridian at 1 p.m., after Cashmere and Kalama open things at 10 a.m.
In Saturday’s other regional game, Colville eliminated La Salle 12-7.
Naches Valley’s sweep Saturday was sparked by its pitching.
Against Orting, Noel Gonzalez allowed a run and six hits, striking out nine in six innings to improve to 10-0. Johns came on and recorded three strikeouts in the seventh.
“Noel has pitched well for us all year,” Walker said.
In the Colville game, starter Cole Gilman struck out six in 4 2/3 innings, but left with runners at first and third and the Rangers clinging to a 1-0 lead. Johns came on and got a strikeout to end the threat and then finished up, getting six punchouts in 2 1/3 innings, giving him nine in just 3 1/3 innings for the day.
“I couldn’t be happier for the way Koleman Jones came on in relief both games and pitched outstanding,” Walker said.
Naches Valley finally got some breathing room against Colville with a three-run seventh as the Rangers recorded four straight two-out hits.
“We’re getting a lot of key hits at key times,” Walker said. “Our seniors are stepping up.”
Against Orting, Gilman, Cameron Walker and Nathan Giles drove in three runs each.
COLVILLE 12, LA SALLE 7: The Lightning held its own — except for one inning. Colville erupted for 11 runs in the third inning, collecting seven hits and cashing in on four walks.
La Salle (15-9), which scored seven runs despite getting just three hits, was led by Max Frame, who had two RBI. Kevin Smith, Aaron Stewart and Connor Andringa each drove in a run.

Soccer: Davis falls to CV in OT
May 20, 2012 by YH-R Sports
SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — For two-thirds of Saturday’s Class 4A state soccer quarterfinal at Central Valley, it looked as if Davis would extend what was already the school’s most successful season.
Then, in just a few minutes, the Pirates’ dominance was for naught.
The Bears rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit, scoring a pair of second-half goals within three minutes of each other to tie the score and force overtime. Chris Stokesbary then netted his second goal of the game to send Central Valley to a 3-2 victory and the state semifinals next week in Puyallup.
“We pretty much controlled the action,” Davis coach Armando Garcia said. “We just didn’t respond in the second half.”
Davis took a 1-0 lead just four minutes into Saturday’s contest on Homar Renteria’s goal. Cesar Rodriguez extended the Pirates advantage with a goal 20 minutes later on an assist from Williams Pineda.
The Pirates, making the program’s first quarterfinal appearance, finished the season with a 13-5-1 record. Central Valley takes a 13-3 record into the final four.

Toppenish sophomore Servando Fuentes scored in the 75th minute to bring the Wildcats within 2-1.
“We had some opportunities but just couldn’t finish,” said Toppenish coach Uriel Gonzalez. “We matched up well and controlled a lot of the match.”
Top-Hi goalkeeper Oliver Sanchez made six saves.
“The boys gave it everything they had,” said Gonzalez, whose team had a 17-match win streak before finishing the season 18-2. “They represented Toppenish well.”

Track: Sunnyside, WV make their mark in javelin
May 20, 2012 by YH-R Sports
RICHLAND, Wash. — State berths were brutally hard to come by for West Valley and Sunnyside athletes during Saturday’s finals of the CBBN-GSL 3A regional track and field meet.
Until a trio of boys javelin throwers came along and swept all three Tacoma-bound spots at Fran Rish Stadium.
Sunnyside’s Eric Amaro and Miguel Guzman punched their state tickets for the second year in a row with a 1-2 finish and West Valley’s James Swanson will tag along thanks to his third-place effort.
Amaro, who was also sixth in the 110 hurdles, had a winning throw of 167-5.
The Grizzlies qualified two other boys for state — sophomore Elijah Pena, who placed third in the 110 hurdles at 15.67, and junior Eduardo Salmeron, who placed second in the triple jump at 42-81/4.
West Valley, which had a champion Friday in pole vaulter Zane Irvine, got state-qualifying third-place finishes from Chase Mears in the 800 and Tierney Silliman in the 100.
Mears dropped his career best to 1:55.06, and Silliman clocked 12.75 in the final after posting a season-best 12.57 in Friday’s prelims. Silliman, a freshman, just missed a state berth in the 200, placing fourth in 25.71.
