YAKIMA, Wash. — Former Prosser High and Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore has signed with the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent, according to multiple reports on Saturday.

The Idaho Statesman’s Chadd Cripe reported that Moore confirmed the signing via text message.

The Lions had not confirmed the signing late Saturday.

Moore would be the third quarterback on the Lions’ roster along with starter Matthew Stafford and backup Shaun Hill. Their third-string QB in 2011, Drew Stanton, left in free agency, according to the team’s website.

Moore would join former Boise State wide receiver Titus Young on the Detroit roster.

Many draft pundits downgraded Moore, who went 50-3 as a starter in college, due to his relatively small stature at 6-feet tall and lack of arm strength.

“The NFL guys would be the first to tell you that,” Boise State coach Chris Petersen told the Idaho Statesman. “They really feel like certainly at that position there’s a minimum cutoff and if you’re not that, they’re not willing to take too much of a chance.”

“I do think there are a lot of teams who were extremely intrigued by him and who would have loved to get him on their roster,” Petersen said. “The Lions are the ones who are extremely fortunate. They’re going to get a good player. … If a team gives him a legitimate chance to learn the system and get reps, I really believe he will be in the NFL for a while.”

YAKIMA, Wash. — Marshall Kent’s remarkable year just keeps getting better.

The Yakima bowler’s freshman year at Robert Morris University in Chicago has yielded a rare sweep of the college awards, which were announced Wednesday.

Kent, 19, was named the men’s most valuable player, rookie of the year, a first team all-American and an academic all-American by the National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association.

Kent

He was also selected the men’s player of the year by the Bowling Writers Association of America.

“I just came into this year trying to do the best I could and I got way more out of it than I could have asked for,” Kent said in a story posted on www.bowl.com. “I had a lot of help from my teammates this season. My mental game became about 10 times stronger this year, and that’s because my teammates helped me out a lot with that.”

Jim Kent, Marshall’s father, said this is the first time a bowler has been named MVP and top rookie in the same year.

“It’s just absolutely amazing. I’m speechless,” Jim Kent said. “I knew he had a great year but to sweep the awards ….”

Earlier this year, Kent won the United States Bowling Congress Team USA trials, making him just the second bowler from Washington to earn a spot on Team USA. He’s also a member of Junior Team USA.

As a result of that trials victory, Kent competed in the U.S. Open in February, and will take part in the World Championships in June as well as the represent the U.S. in the World Cup in November.

With Robert Morris, Kent won two individual tournament titles and has a 216.5 average heading into the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships that began Thursday.

Robert Morris is the top-ranked team in the field of 16. There were 24 Baker games Thursday to determine seeding for match play that begins today and continues through Sunday.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Who won the Women’s National Basketball Association draft? Gonzaga knows.

Bulldog forwards Kayla Standish and Katelan Redmon were both selected Monday to play at the next level, and Standish says it was their coaches who helped bring them there.

“I think the coach staff let me show my versatility,” said Ellenburg’s Standish, who was chosen midway through the second round, and 19th overall, by the defending WNBA champion Minnesota Lynx.

Gonzaga's Kayla Standish in action against Rutgers in the second half of an NCAA tournament first-round women's college basketball game Saturday, March 17, 2012, in Spokane, Wash. (AP Photo/Elaine Thompson)

“Our posts are interchangeable, so we have free rein to what we could do, Katelan and me.”

That would be Katelan Redmon, who was chosen with the final pick of the draft by the New York Liberty.

In one afternoon, the Gonzaga program doubled its contribution to the pro game.

“It is amazing to have had a player drafted three straight years.” Gonzaga coach Kelly Graves, who joined Standish at the draft, held at ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Conn. “That doesn’t happen often, anywhere, so I am thrilled. Our program is coming of age.”

Standish joins former Zags Courtney Vandersloot and Vivian Frieson as players who have been drafted into the WNBA. Vandersloot, in her second year in the league, was the third overall draft pick by the Chicago Sky in 2011. Frieson was Gonzaga’s inaugural player drafted, going 31st to the Tulsa Shock in the 2010 draft.

Now comes the hard part – leaving.

“We start camp next week,” said Standish, “so I’m packing up and leaving Spokane sooner than I thought.”

And while Standish’s final draft slot was “not exactly what I’d heard, I could have been picked last and be happy to just be picked.”

Standish, a 6-foot-2 forward, averaged a team-high 16.4 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks last year as the Bulldogs reached the Sweet 16. She was also named to the all-West Coast Conference first team.

“I am thrilled for Kayla,” Graves said. “I think she is a player that has worked hard and improved and for her to be rewarded by being drafted is phenomenal. I believe her best basketball is ahead of her and I wouldn’t be surprised if she surprises people as she moves forward. Kayla has so much to give to a team.”

And while playing for the best team in the league “is a little intimidating,” Standish said she feels that she can offer the Lynx a lot of versatility on offense.

The Lynx are loaded with talent, even more so after picking up six players in Monday’s draft. “But if I have a good camp, I’ll have a good chance of making the team,” Standish said.

Her biggest goal? Playing better defense, “because the WCC hasn’t had a lot of big post players to defend.” Standish will get her chance right away in camp against Maya Moore, last year’s WNBA Rookie of the Year.

Redmon will also join a winner; the Liberty went 19-15 and reached the playoffs last year.

Redmon, a 6-foot-1 forward transfer from Washington who played at Lewis and Clark High School, averaged 13.4 points and 5.8 rebounds last year for the Zags. Her 81.3 percent free-throw shotting was tops on the team.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled for Katelan,” Graves said. “She has worked hard and I can see her going and winning a spot. She is impressive. The WNBA is the type of game that is right up her alley.”

The WNBA season begins May 18.

Up front, I will never be an overt John Calipari fan. But the fact is that Kentucky’s master recruiter also did an exemplary coaching job in leading the Wildcats to the NCAA championship.
Anyone who can take a team that young, and with individuals who all had been the dominant offensive forces at their respective high schools, and mold them into a cohesive unit that that defends like this team did must be commended.
Dick Vitale spoke to Calipari’s communication skills after Monday night’s title-game victory over Kansas, and it’s true that the same type of salesmanship that can attract athletes from disparate backgrounds — two from Portland (Terrence Jones, Kyle Wiltjer), one from Chicago (Anthony Davis) and one from New York (Doron Lamb) — can also foster a collective purpose.
Even if it’s only for one season.
Rick Pitino even acknowledged that, while several recent Kentucky teams were not to his liking, this one was.
Me, too.

Masters week is always special, even for some who have never played or cared about golf.
There are always multiple intriguing storylines, and many would have existed even if Tiger Woods hadn’t recently ended his PGA Tour victory drought.
Since he has, the anticipation is that much greater.
There is no singular rivalry to compare with Arnold Palmer vs. Jack Nicklaus, as there was when I was a kid learning the game at Fisher Park, but it’s still the Masters.
And Tiger, apparently, is once again Tiger.

YAKIMA, Wash. — JASMINE STOHR (La Salle), a senior on the Lewis-Clark State women’s basketball team, was named Frontier Conference player of the week for the fourth time this season.

The 6-foot Stohr, who missed several games with a knee injury this season, totaled 22 and 18 points in the final two regular season games to earn the honor. She then added 22 points in Wednesday’s victory over Montana Tech to open the conference tournament for the 13th-ranked Warriors (26-4).

Earlier this month, Stohr became the fourth player in program history to reach the 2,000 mark in career points.

KINZI POTEET (Grandview), a junior on the Boise State women’s basketball team, scored a career-high 18 points in the Broncos’ 61-53 Mountain West Conference victory over Wyoming last Saturday.

Poteet’s performance keyed a BSU rally from a 13-point deficit, the Broncos’ biggest comeback of the season.

CHANTEL JAEGER (West Valley), a freshman at Montana State, placed seventh in the 200 and eighth in the 400 and ran on the fourth-place 4×400 at the Bky Sky Conference indoor track meet last weekend. She was previously named Big Sky track athlete of the week for winning the 200 at the Bobcat Open in 24.56 seconds, which ranks fourth all-time at MSU.

GRAHAM VAUX (Davis), a senior at Eastern Washington, clocked 8:26.33 for 3,000 meters at the UW Indoor Invitational in Seattle. DANA WELLS (Riverside Christian), a junior at Washington State, lowered his 200-meter best to 21.90 at the Vandal Collegiate Meet.

YAKIMA, Wash. — When Arianna Mohsenian played basketball at East Valley, a four-year, 1,000-point career that ended in 2008, there was someone in the crowd at every game who she wanted to impress.

Her coach, Robi Raab, for sure. Her supportive parents, naturally. And her teammates, no doubt.

But mostly it was her little sister, Yasi.

East Valley's Yasi Mohsenian handles the ball against Wapato Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012. (Andy Sawyer/Yakima Herald-Republic)

“I wanted to be a role model for her,” she says without hesitation. “Yasi was the young one and always got dragged to my games, but it was great to have her there. I thought about her a lot. It helped me stay focused on doing the right thing.”

Arianna showed the way, Yasi eagerly followed.

And for sisters separated by four years who never got the chance to play on the same team, the Mohsenians are sharing an athletic symmetry that makes them seem like twins.

They are both senior guards with mirrored skills — lockdown defense, never-out-of-position footwork and 3-pointers just when the time is right. And neither has lost a game this season.

Arianna is in her second year as a full-time starter at George Fox University in Newberg, Ore., where the women’s basketball team is 20-0 and ranked third nationally in NCAA Division III.

Yasi, who entered East Valley the fall after her sister left, is now a senior on a 16-0 team that is the top-ranked Class 2A team in the state.

“We’ve been having so much fun keeping track of each other,” Yasi says. “We play on the same nights a lot and my parents bring an I-Pad to my games so they can watch both of us. We’re really close, we’ve always been that way.”

So close that Raab didn’t have to ask Yasi what jersey number she wanted as a freshman. It was Arianna’s No. 12.

So close that Yasi didn’t mind following her older sister into the same sports — soccer, basketball and track and field. She didn’t think or worry about the pressure of comparisons.

“I just wanted to follow in her footsteps,” Yasi says. “Growing up I always looked up to her and thought of her as a great player. So I didn’t expect myself to be as good as her.”

Arianna Mohsenian (21) has helped lead George Fox University to an undeated record and No. 3 national ranking in NCAA Division III. (Photo courtesy of George Fox University)

Yasi has done just fine.

In 2011, the younger Mohsenian was a first-team CWAC basketball pick as a junior, she qualified for state in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter distance races in the spring and was named the CWAC’s offensive player of the year in soccer last fall.

This season she’s bumped her team-leading scoring average to 13.1 points with four conference games remaining.

“We’ve been shooting really well, and our defense has been great,” she says. “But we’re not satisfied with anything. We know we can get better in every aspect of the game.”

Meanwhile, at George Fox, Arianna is a senior leader enjoying the rewards of four years of unwavering hard work. She typically defends the opponents’ point guard and ranks second on the team in 3-pointers and assists.

The Bruins won the D–III national title in Arianna’s freshman year and reached the quarterfinals in each of the last two seasons.

“When you come up through high school defending awesome players like Kayla Standish and Claire Raap, that’s great experience,” Arianna says. “It’s been a real growing experience for me here and I’ve loved it. Just like Yasi and her team, we’re excited to see how far we can go.”

Arianna does wish she could have had at least one year with her sister at East Valley, but acknowledges the benefit of having no overlap.

“That would’ve been so cool because we did the same three sports,” says Arianna, who will graduate in April with a degree in elementary education. “But maybe it was best for her to be on her own. I did get to coach her some on summer teams and that was fun.”

Coaching also came in the form of a warning about trying to live up to somebody else’s standards.

“It wasn’t really deep or anything, but we definitely had some talks about Yasi being her own person,” Arianna says. “I had some concerns that coaches would expect the same things from her and compare us too much. But I think she has totally rocked on her own.”

Good words, but Yasi did want to live up to her sister’s standards. She loved the idea.

“I wanted to be like her because I admired so much about her,” Yasi says. “She was my perfect role model in everything.”

YAKIMA, Wash. — Trishi Williams, a junior from Mabton on the Western Washington women’s basketball team, has scored in double figures during the Vikings’ last five games including a 20-point, eight-rebound, five-assist outing last month in an 85-71 win at Central Washington.

The 5-foot-9 Williams has played in all 19 games while starting nine for the Vikings (8-3 GNAC, 14-5 overall), who list only one senior on their roster. She’s averaging 10 points, third-highest on the squad, shooting a team-best .576 from the field, and is Western’s top rebounder at 7.3 per game.

KINZI POTEET (Grandview), a junior on the Boise State women’s basketball team, has been a bright spot in two of the Broncos’ recent losses. She had a team-high seven rebounds in a defeat at the hands of Wyoming and scored seven points and grabbed seven boards in a loss to UNLV.

For the season, Poteet is averaging 6.2 points and 6.6 rebounds, the latter figure ranking second on the team. The Broncos are 11-11.

MATT BORTON (West Valley), a redshirt freshman on the Idaho men’s basketball team, ranks third on the Vandals in field goal shooting at .453 and is also third in 3-point shooting percentage at .375.

Borton has played in 19 of Idaho’s 21 games, averaging 3.7 points and 2.9 rebounds in 14 minutes of playing time. The Vandals are 11-10.

JASMINE STOHR (La Salle), a senior at Lewis-Clark State College, has been sidelined by a knee injury suffered last month and will miss the rest of the regular season. Stohr had been leading the NAIA Frontier League with a 19.9-point scoring average. Eighth-ranked LCS (19-3) is hopeful Stohr can recover from the sprain in time for the postseason.

DANA WELLS (Riverside Christian), a junior at Washington State, won the 200-meter dash in a career-best 22.28 seconds in a five-team indoor track meet Saturday in Pullman. Teammate BRETT BLANSHAN (Selah) was second in the 200 (22.35) and second in the 60.
