YAKIMA, Wash. — Jake Fife’s two-hitter in the first game propelled Yakima Valley to a 4-0, 6-1 doubleheader sweep of Walla Walla on Saturday at Parker Field, and gave the Yaks a share of the East Region title.

Columbia Basin was 4-0 against the Chukars while YVCC was 2-2.

WENATCHEE, Wash. — Will Chavarria’s 12th-inning sacrifice fly boosted Yakima Valley to an 8-7 win over Wenatchee Valley on Saturday and enabled the Yaks to escape with an East Region doubleheader split.

YVCC, which lost the first game 8-0, remained third in the tightly bunched East going into today’s home game against second-place Columbia Basin.

Selah right-hander Jake Fife will pitch for the Yaks (12-7) in the 1 p.m. start at Parker Field. The game was originally scheduled as the second of a doubleheader last Wednesday, but was rained out.

Yakima Valley took a 7-5 lead into the bottom of the ninth in the nightcap, but a leadoff double and RBI single got the Knights within one and a bases-loaded walk tied it. Carson Miller got the final out with the sacks still full and pitched through the 11th before Fife closed.

YVCC scored the game-winner when Kyle Mall led off with a single, took second on a passed ball and third on a wild pitch. Chavarria scored him with one out.

Sam Trout, who had three of Yakima Valley’s five hits in the opener, went a combined 5 for 8 including an RBI double in the second game. Kyle Thompson had three hits in the nightcap while Ryan King doubled twice.

Counting today’s game, the Yaks will play seven of their nine remaining games at home.

YVCC swept, falls out of first

ONTARIO, Ore. — Unable to hold leads in both games, Yakima Valley was swept by Treasure Valley 6-5 in 11 innings and 6-4 in a baseball doubleheader between the NWAACC East Region co-leaders at the start of Saturday.

The opener was particularly stinging for the Yaks (7-5 league) since they got nine stellar innings from Jake Fife and then took a 5-1 lead in the top of the 11th, with the four-run rally capped by Will Chavarria’s two-run double.

But the Chukars answered with five in the bottom of the 11th, with Chase Miller’s two-run single tying the game, and Mitch Skaggs scoring the winning run on an error by third baseman Kyle Mall.

Fife allowed just three hits, walked two and struck out five in his outing.

Yakima Valley grabbed a 4-0 lead after 31/2 innings of the second game, helped by J.R. Weigel’s solo homer, but the home team again had a response, scoring once in the fourth, tying things with three in the fifth and plating the winning runs in the seventh.

In the fifth, Ryan Wright singled with the bases loaded and an error by left fielder Kyle Thompson allowed the third run to score.

The go-ahead run in the seventh scored on a bases-loaded walk by Carson Miller, and an insurance run came home on Brady Harris’ RBI groundout.

YAKIMA, Wash. — An early season knee injury didn’t stop high-scoring Brandi Henton from returning to the Division I ranks.

The 5-foot-9 standout, who averaged nearly 25 points per game for Yakima Valley before her season ended just nine games in, signed a letter of intent Friday to play for Boise State.

“I thinks it’s a testimonial to what kind of player she is,” YVCC coach Cody Butler said. “She only played nine games and still gets to play at the Division I level.”

The Modesto, Calif., native was the Big West Conference freshman of the year at Long Beach State, where she averaged 12.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per game before transferring to YVCC.

Butler also announced the addition of East Valley’s Mikaela Zimmer to the Yaks.

The 6-foot forward averaged nearly 10 points per game for the Class 2A state runners-up, and earned first-team all-CWAC honors.

She will join Red Devils teammate Jamie Hodgson, Wapato’s Sammi Jo Blodgett and Amber Jones of White Swan as freshmen for YVCC, which finished second in the NWAACC tournament.

“Local, quality kids are the important thing,” Butler said. “It’s always good to recruit kids from successful programs because they expect success.”

YAKIMA, Wash. — When Dean Wagenaar took on the principal and athletic director jobs at Sunnyside Christian 11 years ago — in addition to being head coach of the school’s storied boys basketball program — one question kept being revisited:

How long, he wondered, can I keep this up?

The answer came this week when Wagenaar stepped down as basketball coach with a hefty resume that includes six Class B and 1B state championships and a 374-91 record in 18 seasons.

“Eleven years ago I didn’t know how long I’d have the energy to handle all these commitments. This just felt like the time to pull back some,” Wagenaar said. “It’s a difficult thing to do, but the time is right.”

Wagenaar’s Knights won Class B titles in 2002 and 2005 and then dominated the new 1B class, capturing titles in 2007, ’08, ’10 and ’11. The 2007 team went 26-0. He leaves the program with a 14-year streak of qualifying for the state tournament.

“I’ve been tremendously blessed here,” he said.

COLLEGE FASTPITCH

Yaks split with Big Bend

YAKIMA, Wash. — Karyssa Marbet pitched a four-hitter and Jessie Ihly clubbed a two-run double Friday as Yakima Valley beat Big Bend 6-1 for a split of its East Region fastpitch doubleheader at Dunbar Field.

Big Bend won the first game 8-7 in 10 innings.

Marbet struck out four and walked two in the nightcap. Ihly’s double highlighted a four-run first inning that gave the Yaks (2-8 region, 8-9-1 overall) all the scoring they’d need.

Arlene Futch was 3 for 4, capping a 6 for 10 day as YVCC pounded out 32 hits over the two games. Courtney Cable also was 6 for 10 and totaled four RBI.

The Yaks produced 21 hits in the opener, but committed five errors and had several baserunning mistakes. Big Bend won with two runs in the top or the 10th, during international tiebreaker play, scoring what proved to be the winning run on an error.

YVCC scored one in the bottom of the inning on Cable’s RBI single, but could not advance her past first.

Yakima Valley continues region play at noon today with a doubleheader against Spokane.
