Wildcats fall to Anchorage, 82-65 ||

ELLENSBURG — Central Washington was without its second-leading scorer and rebounder and top shot blocker Saturday night in its GNAC matchup with Alaska Anchorage, and Kevin Davis’ absence was costly for the Wildcats.

Anchorage’s Taylor Rohde, a 6-foot-9 senior, scored 25 of his game-high 31 points in the second half as the Seawolves pulled away for an 82-65 victory in Nicholson Pavilion.

“With Anchorage, you have to pick your poison,” said CWU coach Greg Sparling. “We drew up a game plan designed to limit their threes (3-pointers) because they have three kids shooting better than 40 percent and threes add up in a hurry. I’m really pleased with the way our kids executed the game plan. And we just missed a lot of shots.”

The defeat dropped CWU (4-7 GNAC, 10-9 overall) into a three-way tie with Northwest Nazarene and Saint Martin’s for sixth place in the conference. The top six teams qualify for the GNAC’s postseason tournament.

Without the 6-9 sophomore Davis, who suffered an ankle injury during Thursday night’s win over Alaska Fairbanks, the Wildcats started 6-5 Roby Clyde at center and moved Toussaint Tyler from shooting guard to forward with Jordan Coby replacing Tyler in the backcourt.

Tyler scored a game-high 22 points and point guard Lacy Haddock added 14, but CWU shot just 42 percent from the field while the Seawolves (9-2, 15-4), connected on 59 percent (33 of 56).

Rohde was 13 for 19 and also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds as UAAA outboarded Central 34-22.

The Wildcats visit Northwest Nazarene next Saturday night.

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Central Washington had some highlight-film performances during Wednesday night’s regionally televised game with Western Washington, most notably a couple of Roby Clyde monster dunks.

The Vikings, however, shot much better and made fewer errors en route to a 99-86 GNAC victory in Sam Carver Gym.

For CWU, the loss was its fifth in six games, and its sixth in the last seven meetings with its cross-mountain rival. The Wildcats are 2-6 in the conference and 8-8 overall.

Western, ranked 22nd nationally, took over sole possession of first place in the GNAC at 7-1 and improved to 16-3 overall.

Point guard John Allen led WWU with 32 points, hitting 12 of 14 shots including 4 of 6 from 3-point range. Collectively the Viks shot 56 percent (36 of 64) compared with Central’s 43 (32 for 75).

Lacy Haddock topped the Wildcats with 20 points while Kevin Davis and Toussaint Tyler had 16 each, and Davis and Clyde grabbed 13 rebounds each.

The Wildcats, who trailed 41-35 at halftime, were within 70-64 near the 7:00 mark. But Allen scored Western’s next 12 points, keying a 12-4 burst that left the Vikings up 82-68 with 4:02 to play.

“We took some bad shots and made some critical turnovers during that stretch,” Central coach Greg Sparling said. “And once they had that roll we had to start fouling to extend the game.”

The Wildcats, whose trip from Ellensburg on Tuesday night took more than six hours, will bus to Burnaby, B.C. today for Saturday night’s game at Simon Fraser.

“What we have to do over the next 10 games,” Sparling said, “is take better shots and take better care of the basketball, get into the conference tournament and then make some noise in that deal.”

YVCC men fall to Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. — It tough enough to beat a good team on the road. It’s virtually impossible to pull it off when you can’t make a basket and the other seemingly can’t miss.

That was the case in the first half of Yakima Valley’s NWAACC East Region game at Spokane on Saturday.

The Sasquatch made half of their 20 3-points attempts in the opening 20 minutes, while YVCC shot under 30 percent overall as the home team opened a 26-point cushion at the break en route to a 91-72 victory.

“I think the team’s coming together,” YVCC coach Cody Butler said. “We eased Brit back into it, played her about 15 minutes, and in the second half Simone made four consecutive steals layups that just broke their spirit.”

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Dean Nicholson was of firm belief that the dawn of a new day would substantially improve one’s view of the previous 24 hours, no matter how unsightly they may have been.

“Things look better in the morning,” the legendary Central Washington coach was known to say.

Central Washington's Kevin Davis, right, has his shot blocked by Seattle Pacific's Scott Morse during the first half of Thursday's GNAC game at Nicholson Pavilion in Ellensburg.||ANDY SAWYER/Yakima Herald-Republic

Even so, what happened Thursday night in Nicholson Pavilion would not, under any chronological revision for Wildcats fans, look pretty.

On a night when CWU hoped to jump-start its season and surge toward a fifth consecutive NCAA Division II playoff berth, the Wildcats claimed precious few battles and came nowhere close to winning the war in a 76-49 loss to Seattle Pacific.

And the score wasn’t the worst of it for CWU.

The Wildcats were outrebounded 54-19 and shot only 27 percent from the field en route to their fourth straight defeat.

At 1-5 in the GNAC and 7-7 overall going into Saturday night’s home matchup with Montana State Billings, Central’s postseason hopes must be considered remote at best.

The Falcons, meanwhile, have won four straight, seven of eight and their last two by a combined 61 points. While improving to improved to 5-2 and 13-3, SPU showed evidence of its season-opening 69-68 exhibition shocker at Division I Arizona.

Sophomore guard David Downs, a prime player in the Falcons’ 76-63 upset here in a first-round D-II regional game last March, totaled 20 points, six assists, five rebounds and two steals.

SPU, which shot 55 percent against Central’s pressing, trapping man-to-man defense, got 16 points and 10 boards from 6-foot-11 Andy Poling and 13 points on 6-for-6 field goal marksmanship from 6-8 freshman reserve Cory Hutsen.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-53496" title="CWU v.
Jordan Coby was CWU’s lone double-digit scorer, coming off the bench for 15 points.

Central came into the game as the conference’s highest-scoring team at 84.1 points per game, but developed no offensive rhythm against what early on was a 2-3 SPU zone defense that changed to man-to-man.

Its scoring and field goal percentage totals were the program’s lowest in eight years, and the minus-35 rebounding margin was the most one-sided for at least 32 — statistics were incomplete prior to 1980-81.

The Falcons had allowed a GNAC low 55.7 points per outing.

“It’s hard to believe,” a somber CWU coach Greg Sparling said. “I would never have imagined that this team could be outrebounded that badly. They got 18 offensive boards (computing to 19 second-chance points), and at least three of those came off missed free throws which is totally, totally, totally unacceptable.”

At least it wasn’t a wire-to-wire blowout.

The Wildcats led 5-0 and 12-11, and were within 24-21 late in the first half before a 15-3 SPU run to intermission that was capped by a Downs three-ball.

In the process of scoring 16 first-half points, Downs was 4 for 4 from long distance.

Ahead 39-24, the Falcons then scored their first six points of the second half on layups and their advantage ballooned to as many as 33.

“That run bothered our guys for the rest of the game,” Sparling said. “That put us back on our heels.”

Said Coby, who was 4 of 9 from the field including 3 of 6 from 3-point range, “I still thought at the start of the second half that we had some energy. But they just added onto their lead and we couldn’t overcome it.”

SEATTLE PACIFIC — Wall 3-6 0-0 7, Anderson 3-4 1-2 7, Andy Poling 7-14 2-5 16, David Downs 7-11 2-2 20, Dorman 1-2 0-0 3, Washburn 0-1 0-0 0, Stockton 0-3 2-2 2, Carel 0-0 0-0 0, Todd 0-0 0-0 0, Moll 0-0 2-2 2, Morse 2-6 0-0 4, Cory Hutsen 6-6 1-4 13, Niang 1-2 0-0 2. Totals 30-55 10-17 76.

CENTRAL WASHINGTON — Johnson 1-5 0-2 3, Clyde 2-4 0-0 5, Davis 2-9 3-4 7, Haddock 2-8 0-0 5, Tyler 3-11 1-2 8, Gross 0-2 0-0 0, Starr 1-2 0-0 2, Jordan Coby 4-9 4-4 15, Lieser 0-1 3-6 3, Magee 0-1 1-2 1, Nelson 0-4 0-0 0. Totals 15-56 12-20 49.

Halftime — SPU 39-24. 3-point goals — SPU 6-15 (Wall 1-3, Anderson 0-1, Downs 4-5, Dorman 1-1, Washburn 0-1, Stockton 0-2, Morse 0-2); CWU 7-17 (Johnson 1-2, Clyde 1-2, Haddock 1-1, Tyler 1-3, Starr 0-1, Coby 3-6, Lieser 0-1, Magee 0-1).
CWU falls to 1-4 in GNAC

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Jody Johnson and Lacy Haddock combined to score 50 points Saturday night, but Central Washington had trouble defending and rebounding against Northwest Nazarene and absorbed a 98-96 defeat in GNAC men’s basketball in Nicholson Pavilion.

The loss dropped Central, the defending conference champion, to 1-4 in the GNAC and 7-6 overall.

Johnson totaled 26 points and Haddock 24, with Jordan Coby adding 11 and Kevin Davis 10 as Central shot 53 percent for the game.

The Wildcats were only 27 of 40 from the foul line, however, compared with 22 of 27 for Nazarene (2-3, 8-5), and yielded 15 offensive rebounds that led to 22 Crusaders points.

“We’ve got to be able to stop penetration,” said CWU coach Greg Sparling, “and we can’t keep giving up second-chance points when we get stops. Those two things are killing us.”

Aside from a blowout defeat at Alaska Anchorage, Central has lost 91-80 in overtime at Alaska Fairbanks and 77-75 to conference-leading Western Oregon.

With the score tied 47-47 at halftime, the Wildcats scored first in the second half to take the lead. Nazarene regained the advantage soon thereafter, however.

After NNU’s Jonathan Hawkins made one of two free throws with two seconds left, Haddock’s long 3-pointer bounced off the front rim as time expired.

Central hosts Seattle Pacific on Thursday night.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska — The official high temperature for Fairbanks on Saturday was 25 below zero, and it probably seemed even colder for Central Washington.

The Wildcats saw Alaska Fairbanks’ Dominique Brinson send their GNAC game into overtime with a long 3-pointer, then watched the Nanooks score the first eight points during the extra session en route to a 91-80 loss.

Central, which suffered a 37-point defeat Thursday night at Alaska Anchorage, fell to 1-3 in conference play and 7-5 overall.

“We had a hand in the kid’s (Brinson’s) face, he was fading away on a 21-footer and he got nothing but net,” said CWU coach Greg Sparling. “I just watched it on tape. So then they’re all going crazy and they have all the momentum in overtime, and we couldn’t get anything going.”

Sophomore center Kevin Davis posted his sixth double-double of the season with 23 points and 13 rebounds while also blocking four shots, but the Wildcats missed three of four free throws during the final 33 seconds of regulation — any of which would have iced the game.

“It’s not like they were bricks,” Sparling said. “They were all in-and-outs.”

Toussaint Tyler had 13 points and a career-high nine assists, Lacy Haddock scored 11 points and Jody Johnson 10 for CWU, which shot only 41 percent from the field including 2 of 12 from 3-point range.

Tyler and Johnson were especially cold, shooting a combined 5 for 25.

“We’ve had two games in the GNAC now (including a 77-75 home loss to Western Oregon) where we were in a great position to win but couldn’t close the door. So now we just have to get back off the frozen tundra and get home.”

Brinson led the Nanooks (1-3, 4-9) with 20 points while Stefan Tica had 19.

Central hosts Northwest Nazarene next Saturday night.

LAS VEGAS — Rollins might have arrived in Las Vegas as the 10th-best Division II team in the nation, but it left winless against the state of Washington.

Bradon Magee came off the bench to score 20 points Friday night, sparking Central Washington to an 88-80 victory over the Tars in the Great Western Shootout at The Arena at South Point.

Central’s victory came one day after Rollins was dumped 80-61 by Western Washington.

The Wildcats (7-3) took charge with a 13-5 run, featuring three 3-pointers, to stretch a one-point advantage to 76-67 with 6:27 remaiing. Rollins (7-2) never got closer than four points after that.

In addition to Magee, Jordan Coby had 15 points, all on 3-pointers, and six assists, Lacy Haddock had 13 points, and Kevin Davis 12 points. Jody Johnson grabbed a game-best 13 rebounds.

“Everybdy got to play and everybody scored,” said CWU coach Greg Sparling. “Kevin Davis made the all-tournament team and Jody was absolutely huge on the boards for us. We built a nice lead and, at the end, we took care of the ball and made our free throws.”

A key to Central’s win Friday was a turnaround from the foul line.
