ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Sparked by a 3-point barrage from Sophie Russell and Jessica VanDyke, Central Washington’s women upset Seattle Pacific 80-75 in a GNAC women’s basketball game Saturday night at Nicholson Pavilion, snapping a nine-game losing streak to the Falcons.

Russell and VanDyke were both 5 of 11 from 3-point range en route to team-best totals of 19 and 18 points, respectively, as Central (7-14, 4-10) beat Seattle Pacific (15-8, 9-6) for just the second time in the past 21 meetings.

Russell and VanDyke were part of a balanced attack that also had Alex Dunn (16 points) and Stacy Albrecht (12) reach double figures.

“We really came together as a team,” said first-year Central coach Shawn Nelson, who enjoyed the best victory in his young Wildcat tenure. “Everybody wearing a Wildcat uniform tonight contributed, especially during the final five minutes when we could have packed it in.

“We stepped it up and took it to a level where we should be able to be at on a consistent basis.”

Central overcame a 13-point first-half deficit, and played with poise late in the game. The Wildcats never trailed in the final 5 minutes, although the game was tied twice in that span, and they opened a seven-point lead three times, including twice in the final minute.

Katie Benson led Seattle Pacific with 22 points and 10 rebounds.

Wildcats fall to Anchorage, 82-65 ||

ELLENSBURG — Central Washington was without its second-leading scorer and rebounder and top shot blocker Saturday night in its GNAC matchup with Alaska Anchorage, and Kevin Davis’ absence was costly for the Wildcats.

Anchorage’s Taylor Rohde, a 6-foot-9 senior, scored 25 of his game-high 31 points in the second half as the Seawolves pulled away for an 82-65 victory in Nicholson Pavilion.

“With Anchorage, you have to pick your poison,” said CWU coach Greg Sparling. “We drew up a game plan designed to limit their threes (3-pointers) because they have three kids shooting better than 40 percent and threes add up in a hurry. I’m really pleased with the way our kids executed the game plan. And we just missed a lot of shots.”

The defeat dropped CWU (4-7 GNAC, 10-9 overall) into a three-way tie with Northwest Nazarene and Saint Martin’s for sixth place in the conference. The top six teams qualify for the GNAC’s postseason tournament.

Without the 6-9 sophomore Davis, who suffered an ankle injury during Thursday night’s win over Alaska Fairbanks, the Wildcats started 6-5 Roby Clyde at center and moved Toussaint Tyler from shooting guard to forward with Jordan Coby replacing Tyler in the backcourt.

Tyler scored a game-high 22 points and point guard Lacy Haddock added 14, but CWU shot just 42 percent from the field while the Seawolves (9-2, 15-4), connected on 59 percent (33 of 56).

Rohde was 13 for 19 and also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds as UAAA outboarded Central 34-22.

The Wildcats visit Northwest Nazarene next Saturday night.

ALASKA ANCHORAGE — Thompson 2-4 2-2 6, Lauwers 0-2 0-1 0, Taylor Rohde 13-19 5-6 31, Steve White 5-8 2-2 12, Fossman 3-7 0-0 8, Lonnie Ridgeway 4-4 4-4 12, Jackson 1-1 0-0 2, Demissie 3-6 0-0 7, Hearn 1-1 0-0 2, Gibcus 1-4 0-0 2.
ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Jody Johnson continued his stellar play for Central Washington on Thursday night, scoring 17 points and grabbing eight rebounds as the Wildcats stayed in GNAC Tournament contention with a 74-69 victory over Alaska Fairbanks in Nicholson Pavilion.

The win, CWU’s third in four games, improved the Wildcats to 4-6 in conference play and 10-8 overall, boosting them into a sixth-place tie with Saint Martin’s.

The top six teams qualify for the GNAC tourney.

Johnson, the former Yakima Valley Community College standout, added two assists and two steals after a career-high 33 points in a Saturday night win at Simon Fraser.

YVCC men fall to Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. — It tough enough to beat a good team on the road. It’s virtually impossible to pull it off when you can’t make a basket and the other seemingly can’t miss.

That was the case in the first half of Yakima Valley’s NWAACC East Region game at Spokane on Saturday.

The Sasquatch made half of their 20 3-points attempts in the opening 20 minutes, while YVCC shot under 30 percent overall as the home team opened a 26-point cushion at the break en route to a 91-72 victory.

The Yaks (2-1 region, 9-6 overall) had three players in double figures, led by the 19 points of Dabrail Henton. DeShawn Battle added 17 points and Johnnie Diggs 16.

But Yakima Valley made just 11 of 37 first-half shots and finished 24 of 69 overall (35 percent), including 4 of 18 (22 percent) from 3-point range.

Spokane (2-1, 13-3), meanwhile, finished 15 of 36 (42 percent) on treys, led by Preston Wynne, who made 7 of 14 long-range shots en route to 26 points.

Brad Bagby added 19 points and Tyler Edwards 15, with those two combining for five triples.

Jordan, Newcomb power Yaks

SPOKANE — Simone Jordan scored 21 points and perimeter sharpshooter Brittney Weaver returned from an ankle injury to score 12 as Yakima Valley crushed Spokane 64-44 in an East Region women’s game Saturday.

Kaylah Gonzales added 10 points for the fourth-ranked Yaks, who improved to 2-1 in the region and 12-4 overall.

Jordan missed only three shots on the day, going 7 of 10 from the field including 2 of 2 from 3-point range, and made all five of her free throws. She also came up with seven steals, all in less than 20 minutes of court time, while Jaimi Cox had five.

Yakima Valley’s lead was only 30-26 at halftime, but the Sasquatch (0-3, 5-10) shot only 33 percent and totaled 27 turnovers for the game.

“I think the team’s coming together,” YVCC coach Cody Butler said. “We eased Brit back into it, played her about 15 minutes, and in the second half Simone made four consecutive steals layups that just broke their spirit.”

CWU falls to 1-4 in GNAC

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Jody Johnson and Lacy Haddock combined to score 50 points Saturday night, but Central Washington had trouble defending and rebounding against Northwest Nazarene and absorbed a 98-96 defeat in GNAC men’s basketball in Nicholson Pavilion.

The loss dropped Central, the defending conference champion, to 1-4 in the GNAC and 7-6 overall.

Johnson totaled 26 points and Haddock 24, with Jordan Coby adding 11 and Kevin Davis 10 as Central shot 53 percent for the game.

The Wildcats were only 27 of 40 from the foul line, however, compared with 22 of 27 for Nazarene (2-3, 8-5), and yielded 15 offensive rebounds that led to 22 Crusaders points.

“We’ve got to be able to stop penetration,” said CWU coach Greg Sparling, “and we can’t keep giving up second-chance points when we get stops. Those two things are killing us.”

Aside from a blowout defeat at Alaska Anchorage, Central has lost 91-80 in overtime at Alaska Fairbanks and 77-75 to conference-leading Western Oregon.

With the score tied 47-47 at halftime, the Wildcats scored first in the second half to take the lead. Nazarene regained the advantage soon thereafter, however.

After NNU’s Jonathan Hawkins made one of two free throws with two seconds left, Haddock’s long 3-pointer bounced off the front rim as time expired.

YAKIMA, Wash. — No news was considered good news Thursday regarding injured Yakima Valley women’s star Brandi Henton.

A day after an MRI on Henton’s damaged right knee was deemed inconclusive by local doctors, a similar conclusion was reached by another radiologist, according to YVCC coach Cody Butler.

At issue is whether the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), injured Dec. 18, needs to be completely repaired.

If it does, Henton’s one-season Yakima Valley career is over. But if an arthroscopic procedure can fix the problem, the 5-foot-9 guard could be back in action this month.

Butler said Thursday the MRI has been sent to Henton’s hometown of Modesto, Calif., where her mother, Lisa, will have it analyzed by doctors.

“Her mom was an athlete who had knee surgeries and is familiar with this type of thing,” Butler said. “If they still can’t tell (what needs to be done), she could get scoped next week and they’ll determine at that time what type of procedure needs to be done.”

He said Henton has been fitted for a brace in the event that she’ll be able to play later this season.

A transfer from Long Beach State, Henton averaged 24.7 points through nine games for the defending NWAACC champion Yaks with a high of 42. She already has attracted recruiters from several upper-echelon NCAA Division I programs and Thursday was offered a scholarship by Butler’s alma mater, the University of Nevada.

Meanwhile, YVCC’s second-leading scorer, Brittney Newcomb, is listed as day-to-day by Butler due to an ankle injury sustained on Dec. 29.

“It’s possible that she could play Saturday,” he said, “but we’re going to be extremely judicious with her and play it safe. We need her more at the end of the season than we do right now.”

A mainstay on last season’s title team, Newcomb has averaged 16.92 points over 12 games and is one of the NWAACC’s best 3-point shooters.

Yakima Valley, ranked fourth in the most recent NWAACC coaches poll, is 10-3 and begins East Region play Saturday, along with YVCC’s men, at Wenatchee Valley. No news was considered good news Thursday regarding injured Yakima Valley women’s star Brandi Henton.

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Alex Dunn posted a triple-double of 13 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists Saturday as Central Washington got its first GNAC victory over the season by beating Alaska Fairbanks 97-74 in Nicholson Pavilion.

Dunn, a 5-foot-7 junior, transferred to Central from Carroll College in Helena, Mont., when Carroll’s coach, Shawn Nelson, took the job at Central last May.

She was 6 of 12 from the field and converted her only 3-point attempt as the Wildcats were 12 of 34 from long distance.

It was only the second triple-double in Wildcats history, and Dunn became the fourth player in the 11-year history of the GNAC to accomplish the feat.

Sophie Russell led five CWU scorers in double figures with 23 points while also grabbing seven rebounds to aid a 51-39 Wildcats advantage on the glass.

Jessica VanDyke had 18 points and true freshman Melanie Valdez 16 while going 8 for 8 from the foul line. Another freshman, Courtney Johnson had 11 points.

After building a 39-32 intermission lead, Central (1-3 GNAC, 4-7 overall) outscored the Nanooks (0-3, 4-9) 58-42 in the second half.

Russell had 19 points over the final 20 minutes, hitting 3 of 5 3-pointers.

“(The strong half) was sparked by Sophie Russell, and of course Alex, who got everybody involved and rebounded extremely well from her guard position to set us up for some transition baskets,” Nelson said.

Shooting 54 percent during the second half, CWU finished at 43 percent overall, its second-highest total of the season.

Autumn Greene and Jacqueline Lovato scored 19 and 18 points, respectively, for Fairbanks.
