YAKIMA, Wash. — When Dean Wagenaar took on the principal and athletic director jobs at Sunnyside Christian 11 years ago — in addition to being head coach of the school’s storied boys basketball program — one question kept being revisited:

How long, he wondered, can I keep this up?

The answer came this week when Wagenaar stepped down as basketball coach with a hefty resume that includes six Class B and 1B state championships and a 374-91 record in 18 seasons.

“Eleven years ago I didn’t know how long I’d have the energy to handle all these commitments. This just felt like the time to pull back some,” Wagenaar said. “It’s a difficult thing to do, but the time is right.”

Wagenaar’s Knights won Class B titles in 2002 and 2005 and then dominated the new 1B class, capturing titles in 2007, ’08, ’10 and ’11. The 2007 team went 26-0. He leaves the program with a 14-year streak of qualifying for the state tournament.

“I’ve been tremendously blessed here,” he said.

COLLEGE FASTPITCH

Yaks split with Big Bend

YAKIMA, Wash. — Karyssa Marbet pitched a four-hitter and Jessie Ihly clubbed a two-run double Friday as Yakima Valley beat Big Bend 6-1 for a split of its East Region fastpitch doubleheader at Dunbar Field.

Big Bend won the first game 8-7 in 10 innings.

Marbet struck out four and walked two in the nightcap. Ihly’s double highlighted a four-run first inning that gave the Yaks (2-8 region, 8-9-1 overall) all the scoring they’d need.

Arlene Futch was 3 for 4, capping a 6 for 10 day as YVCC pounded out 32 hits over the two games. Courtney Cable also was 6 for 10 and totaled four RBI.

The Yaks produced 21 hits in the opener, but committed five errors and had several baserunning mistakes. Big Bend won with two runs in the top or the 10th, during international tiebreaker play, scoring what proved to be the winning run on an error.

YVCC scored one in the bottom of the inning on Cable’s RBI single, but could not advance her past first.

Yakima Valley continues region play at noon today with a doubleheader against Spokane.

Game 1

TURLOCK, Calif. — Maria Gau’s masterful four-hitter got Central Washington started impressively during Friday’s Tournament of Champions fastpitch tournament, but the Wildcats were unable to follow their 3-1 win over Humboldt State with victories.

Central later lost 5-0 to UC San Diego and 5-4 to San Francisco State.

Gau struck out eight and walked none against Humboldt, improving her record to 6-8 as Cassi Ellis homered and drove in three runs. Ellis and Bre Thomas had three hits apiece.

UC San Diego, ranked 20th nationally, got a combined three-hitter from Michelle Escamilla and Camille Gaito and snapped a scoreless tie with two runs in the sixth inning and three more in the seventh. UCSD improved to 27-10.

Against San Francisco State, a five-run third inning was Central’s undoing. Gau was unable to complete the frame, allowing nine hits and five earned runs.

Heidy Wells homered for CWU while Ellis drove in two runs.

CWU swept at MSU Billings

BILLINGS, Mont. — Chris Hashimoto drove in four runs in the first game and Brandon Wang was 3 for 3 in the second, but Central Washington was nonetheless swept Friday by last-place Montana State Billings 11-10 and 4-2 in a GNAC baseball doubleheader.

Hashimoto hammered a game-tying, two-run double in the fourth inning and a go-ahead two-run homer in the sixth.

But after CWU (5-5 GNAC, 9-13 overall) scored three times in the top of the ninth for a 10-7 lead in the opener, the Yellowjackets (3-5, 10-10) responded with a vengeance in the bottom of the inning.

Central did not record an out, and the game ended on a three-run homer by MSUB first baseman Blake Loran.

In the second game, three CWU errors led to three unearned runs and a 4-0 deficit after three innings.

The teams are scheduled to play another doubleheader starting today at noon.

Central athletes lead at Western

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Central Washington’s Manny Melo compiled a 127-point decathlon lead and Tayler Fettig topped heptathlon standings after the first day of the Western Washington Multi-Events track and field meet Friday at Civic Stadium.

Melo, a junior from Battle Ground, led CWU athletes to a top-four ranking as teammates Brandon Roddewig, Andrew Venema — a junior from Bickleton — and Colin Alexander followed in order.

Central (8-11 GNAC, 9-15 overall), which lost the opener 5-0, ended a five-game losing streak with the second-game victory.

Jen Schwartz went 3 for 3 with a double and two RBI, and Cassi Ellis had a two-run double in the second game for Central, which capitalized on five Western errors in the game, with all six of Central’s runs unearned.

Jenna DeRoiser threw a three-hit shutout and Kristen Allen hit a two-run double in the opener, and Amanda Flores homered in the second game for Western (4-12, 6-20).

BULL RIDING

Prosser bull solid at PBR event

Buckey, Craig Wentz’s bucking bull out of Prosser, did his job over the weekend at the Professional Bull Riders’ “15/15 Bucking Battle” in Albuquerque, even if it wasn’t up to the lofty standards the bull has established for itself over the last few months.

The rider who drew Buckey, Renato Nunes, lasted only 3.06 seconds before Buckey deposited him on the arena floor in the Saturday event (which was televised live on CBS on Sunday morning).

That helps Buckey’s “buckoff percentage,” which is over 77 percent, but his judges’ score was 43.75 (22.0 from one judge, 21.75 from the other). But it won’t help his status as a legitimate contender for the PBR’s Bull of the Year honors, as it ended his run of five straight 45-or-better outs — including one at last October’s PBR Finals. Buckey’s score was not one of the top 15 in the event.

YAKIMA, Wash. — Woody Woodcock recorded his first hole-in-one on Saturday by using a 6-iron to ace the par-3 sixth hole at Yakima Country Club.

The shot was witnessed by Charlie Eglin, Art Giussi, Joe Buchanan and Rob O’Brien.

BURNABY, British Columbia — The Wildcats took leads into the bottom of the seventh inning in both games of its fastpitch doubleheader Sunday against Simon Fraser, but a pair of walk-off home runs by Sammie Olexa ruined the Wildcats’ day, as the Clan defeated the Wildcats 2-1 and 8-5.

Carrina Wagner hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning of the opener for Central (7-10 GNAC, 8-14 overall), and sophomore pitcher Maria Gau held the lead until the seventh inning, as she took a two-hit shutout bid into the final frame.

After a leadoff single to Simon Fraser’s Megan Durrant, Olexa hit a walk-off home run. CWU’s Liz Jusko was the only player with more than one hit for either team, going 2-for-2.

In game two, Central took a 3-2 lead in the fourth and added two insurance runs in the seventh, but three-run frames by the Clan in both the seventh and eighth innings, capped by Olexa’s second homer, enabled Simon Fraser (14-6 GNAC, 18-7 overall) to complete the sweep.

Carrina Wagner hit a solo home run in the fourth for Central, her sixth of the season.
