ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Near the top of Blaine Bennett’s wish list for Central Washington’s spring football camp was the emergence of one or more consistent wide receivers.

Ladies and gentlemen, meet Greg Logan.

Not to say that the redshirt sophomore will be the next Johnny Spevak or Brian Potucek, or that others among CWU’s receivers will not excel next season.

White team quarterback Ryan Robertson looks to pass during Central Washington University football's spring game in Ellensburg, Wash. Saturday May 12, 2012. (Andy Sawyer/Yakima Herald-Republic)

But Logan, a walk-on from Graham-Kapowsin, was among the most impressive performers Saturday in CWU’s annual Crimson-White game in Tomlinson Stadium.

The 5-foot-10, 175-pounder, playing on the first offensive unit, caught four passes including a 37-yard scoring strike as the White team — consisting primarily of the No. 1 offense and No. 2 defense — prevailed, 13-10.

“We had a lot of receivers make plays today,” Bennett said. “Greg Logan made two or three nice catches, Anthony Spain had a nice day and Leon LaDeaux made some plays.”

But while Spain and LaDeaux were mainstays on last year’s squad, Logan had quite literally been under the radar.

His most prominent play came midway through the second half, when on third and 20 from the Crimson 37 yard line, Ryan Robertson connected with Logan on an over-the-middle route. After catching the ball in traffic at about the 10, he spun through multiple defenders and scored.

Asked if his outing would mean upward movement on the depth chart, Logan said, “I hope so. We have a lot of receivers who can make plays on this team, but we also have some sets with five wideouts. So I hope I can get on the field and get some chances, because I think our team’s going to be really good.”

Robertson, the incumbent starting quarterback who’s coming off a severe hip injury from last year, hit 9 of 14 passes for 150 yards and two TDs. His first score came on a 53-yard flea-flicker to Dalton Thomas.

“Best I’ve felt in a long time,” the redshirt senior said. “Our O-line is solid, our running backs ran hard and our receivers made plays. I’m just excited about the season.”

Among the newcomers to make an impression was junior quarterback Jeff Nelson, a transfer from Sierra College in California. The 6-3, 220-pounder hit 6 of 8 throws for 91 yards, including a perfect deep-sideline bomb to Stevie Will that covered 66 yards for the game’s final score.

Defensive standouts included Kittitas High graduate Louie Bruketta, a senior linebacker with two tackles, and East Valley’s Cody Nickoloff, a redshirt freshman linebacker who had one stop for a two-yard loss.

The day was marred, however, by a fight between offensive lineman Jon Murbach and defensive lineman Jarrel Johnson. After cooler heads prevailed, with the clock winding down, Bennett decided to call it good.

“You never like to see guys get in little scuffle like that,” Bennett said, “but overall I’m very pleased with today and the way our spring went overall. We got a lot of things done.”

CWU, coming off a 4-6 year, convenes on Aug. 8 for early drills and opens the 2012 season Sept. 1 at Texas A&M-Kingsville.

White 0 7 6 0 — 13
Crimson 0 3 7 0 — 10

White — Dalton Thomas 53 pass from Ryan Robertson (Sean Davis kick).

Crimson — FG, Josef Kistler 35.

White — Greg Logan 37 pass from Robertson (kick blocked).

Crimson — Stevie Will 66 pass from Jeff Nelson (Kistler kick).

INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS

RUSHING — White: Ishmael Stinson 9-43, Louis Davis 7-31, Colin Walsh 1-5, Sean Davis 1-(minus 11), Robertson 4-(minus 19). Crimson: Randall Gordon 4-16, Bryce Davis 5-15, Devon Davis 2-2, T.J. Early 1-(minus 5), Darius Banks 3-(minus 12).

PASSING — White: Robertson 9-14-0-150, Walsh 3-8-1-26. Crimson: Nelson 6-8-0-91, Banks 1-6-1-8, Early 0-2-0.

YAKIMA, Wash. — It has not been an especially warm spring in the Kittitas Valley, and Blaine Bennett is cool with that.

All the better to evaluate Central Washington’s spring football season, which concludes with Saturday’s noon spring game at Tomlinson Stadium.

The Wildcats will be divided into crimson and white teams, head coach Bennett said, with one squad comprised primarily of the first-team offense and the second-team defense and the other featuring the No. 1 defense and No. 2 offense.

“We always try to have some fun with our spring game,” Bennett said, “but we also try to keep it somewhat competitive. That’s why we don’t have a player draft. And we divide the staff equally, too.”

Among the encouraging news Bennett reported was no serious injuries, and that quarterback Ryan Robertson has shown few ill effects from a dislocated hip suffered last Oct.15.

“Ryan has had a nice spring, and so has Darius Banks,” Bennett said, referring to a junior transfer quarterback from Fullerton (Calif.) College. Robertson, who will be a redshirt senior when CWU convenes Aug. 8 for fall camp, remains the No. 1 QB, Bennett said.

Elsewhere, Bennett said tackle Donnie Johnson, ends Jerod Baker and Gabe Bruno (transfer from Butte, Calif. College) and linebackers Stan Langlow, Riley Wall and John Koopman have excelled on a defense that’s being rebuilt under the tutelage of new coordinator Malik Roberson. True freshman Cedrique Chaney has impressed in the secondary, too.

Offensively, tackle Mike Nelson has played well along with true freshmen Nic Cooper at running back and Taylor McAllister at wide receiver.

“We’re really pleased with a lot of our freshmen and sophomores,” Bennett said, adding that consistent play from Central’s receivers is still being sought.

The game will consist of 30-minute halves with a running clock, and Bennett said a camp for youth 5 to 14 years old will be held from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Cost is $10.

Admission will be donation of a non-perishable item to the FISH Community Food Bank.

Central’s season starts Sept. 1 at Texas A&M-Kingsville.

YAKIMA, Wash. — This will be a different spring for Blaine Bennett.

In addition to answering the annual questions, filling the usual holes and making the requisite changes during Central Washington’s spring workouts, which begin Monday, Bennett will for the first time in his four-plus years as CWU’s head coach try to bring the Wildcats back from a losing season.

Central Washington quarterback Ryan Robertson throws the ball under pressure from Humboldt State’s Chris Peterson during the first half on Oct. 23, 2010, at Tomlinson Stadium in Ellensburg. (Sara Gettys/Yakima Herald-Republic)

By most accounts Central underachieved in 2011, losing twice to Humboldt State and also to Simon Fraser — the upstart Clan’s first NCAA Division II victory — en route to a 4-6 record.

After controlling the GNAC during Bennett’s first three seasons in Ellensburg, CWU went only 4-4 in a conference so lightly regarded nationally that newly crowned champion Humboldt was not chosen for the playoffs despite finishing 9-1.

And for Central, which had reached the postseason in three of the previous four years, hopes for a playoff berth evaporated with an 0-3 start.

So yes, it will be a different spring for Bennett. But not necessarily because the Wildcats are coming off an abnormal autumn.

“We were very disappointed that we didn’t have the kind of year we wanted, or the kind of year we expected,” Bennett said. “But I don’t think that changes anything you do in the spring. Whether you win a championship or you don’t, every spring means a new team.”

How good the new Wildcats will be when the new season starts on Sept. 1 at Texas A&M-Kingsville — the first of three straight road games — depends on a number of factors to be impacted during 15 practices over the next 27 days.

Among the most vital are how thoroughly quarterback Ryan Robertson has recovered from a dislocated right hip suffered last Oct. 15, and whether he will be up to challenges from two junior college transfers.

Offense figures to be Central’s strong suit, since only one senior (wideout Justin Helwege) started the season finale against Dixie State and the defense has been decimated by graduation and attrition.

In addition to the loss of seniors such as West Valley’s Taylor Tanasse and Kittitas’ Mike Reno, both standout linemen, safeties Genesis Fonoimoana and Deionte Gordon will also be missing despite being juniors last season.

Fonoimoana has left school, Bennett said, and Gordon has been suspended for this season, at least, for undisclosed transgressions. Fonoimoana was named all-GNAC second team after leading CWU with five interceptions, but missed a game for violation of team rules. Both had transferred from junior colleges in California.

For Robertson’s part, the 6-foot-4 senior has pronounced himself fit — mostly — for the spring.

“I’m not 100 percent, but I’m pretty danged close,” he said, mentioning that while his injury didn’t require surgery it prevented him from walking for nearly two months. “I’m starting to throw and take drops. I’m expecting to participate fully in spring ball.”

So are Darius Banks and Jeff Nelson, juniors from Fullerton and Sierra colleges, respectively, in California.

“They’re different types of players,” Bennett said. “Banks hasn’t played in a couple of years, but he’s a talented athlete. Nelson is a little more like Ryan, more of a pocket thrower.

“Ryan has the advantage, obviously, because of his knowledge of our system and his experience here. These two guys, if they’re not competing for the starting spot, should give us some backup options.”

Linebackers Stan Langlow, John Koopman and Stetson Shearer represent the Wildcats’ most experienced defensive area. And the kicking game should be efficient with placekicker Sean Davis and punter Josef Kistler back, though top return men Gaisie and Armahd Lewis are gone.

Joining Banks and Nelson among California JC transfers, meanwhile, are defensive end Gabe Bruno of Butte College; receiver Stevie Will of Riverside Community College; safety Osayande Aikhionbare of Glendale Community College; and linebacker Holman Faatili of Long Beach City College. Faatili is a Bellingham native.

Central, which prior to last year had not had a losing season since 2001, has scheduled its spring game for May 12. Its home opener is set for Sept. 22 against GNAC newcomer Azusa Pacific.

YAKIMA, Wash. — Taking his seat at a table with an NCAA name card in front of him, Blaine Bennett looked a bit uncomfortable.

That Central Washington had lost, 21-20 to Northwest Missouri State in a 2009 Division II quarterfinal game only minutes earlier, was no doubt a contributing factor.

But on an afternoon of distinct dis-appointment for the Wildcats — a potential tying extra point was blocked with six seconds to play — a relatively new CWU tradition gained instant credibility.

“My first comment,” Bennett said, “is that everyone should stand up when Buddy Wood walks into a room.”

Wood, a senior linebacker, had that day concluded a legendary Central career with 19 tackles. He also wore No. 44, and players who have best exemplified Wood’s spirit have since been chosen to sustain his image.

Thursday, senior linebacker John Koopman became the newest No. 44.

“It was a no-brainer,” said Mike Reno, a Kittitas graduate who made the selection after wearing the number last year as a senior. “John as been here from day one — he’s been here longer than I have, actually. He’s worked extremely hard to make himself a better player and team leader, and he’s overcome a lot in terms of injuries.”

A 6-foot-1, 215-pounder from Enumclaw, Koopman is in his sixth year at Central after redshirting his first season and being granted a medical redshirt year when an injury prematurely ended his 2008 season.

He became a special teams standout in 2009 and 2010, then emerged as the Wildcats’ second-leading tackler at middle linebacker last season with 30 solos and 28 assists.

“John was an excellent choice for all the right reasons,” Bennett said. “He has overachieved at the linebacker position after working his way up to a starting role. He’s become an impact player for us and has been outstanding in both the weight room and the classroom. He’s an excellent student who will graduate with a very good GPA, and he has seen these other players wear No. 44 so he knows what it represents.”

Primarily, Reno said, it represents leadership and commands respect.

“With the guys who wore the jersey before me,” he said, “the other players just naturally looked up to them. They would have no matter what number they wore because of the types of players and people they were.

“But now, it’s reached the status of other guys looking at whoever is wearing No. 44 and thinking, ‘He’s the boss.’”

Linebacker Adam Bighill wore the number after Wood did, with defensive lineman Mitch Reffett having earned the distinction retroactively in 2008. The awarding of the number became an official program tradition following that season.

YAKIMA, Wash. — Blaine Bennett had recruited Malik Roberson once before, thereby getting him started in college football.

And now Roberson, a Spokane native lured to Washington State by then-graduate assistant Bennett in 1989, has reunited with his one-time suitor, having been named Central Washington’s defensive coordinator on Friday.

“I was a graduate assistant (at WSU) for two years, one for Dennis Erickson and one for Mike Price,” Bennett said. “Spokane was an area Coach Price had me help him recruit in, and that’s how Malik and I first met.”

Roberson, from Lewis-Clark High School, played two years for Price in Pullman before leaving. He served as an assistant at L-C for two years, then resumed his playing career as a defensive lineman under Mike Dunbar at Central in 1994.

Coaching stops at Eastern Washington (2000-07) and Washington State (2008-10), both as a member of Paul Wulff’s staffs, and last season at Portland State preceded Roberson’s move to Ellensburg.

With the Wildcats he succeeds Joe Lorig, who left in January to become outside linebackers coach and defensive special teams coordinator for new coach Todd Graham at Arizona State.

Lorig came to CWU with Bennett in 2008 and was an assistant head coach in addition to being defensive coordinator. He had assisted Bennett during the late 1990s at Western Oregon.

“There are several things that Malik brings to the table that really set him apart from the other coaches in the pool of candidates for this job,” Bennett said. “No. 1, he’s from the state of Washington which is very important since we sign all of our (prep) guys from here. He continues to add a significant presence and has great name recognition within our state.

“He has a Division I background, not only in the Big Sky Conference with Eastern and Portland State, but at Washington State as well. And third is his connection to Central — he had a chance to play here and got his degree from Central. That’s huge.”

As a CWU junior, Roberson led the Wildcats in tackles for loss (16) and sacks (nine), then helped them win a share of the NAIA national championship in 1995.

Roberson’s hiring completes a series of changes in Bennett’s staff, with the others being longtime assistant John Picha’s move from offensive line coach to linebackers coach and John Gariano’s move from defensive line coach to the offensive line.

The new coach’s family includes wife Ondria, twin daughters Madison and Makayla and 20-year-old son Nick.

Central begins spring practice on April 16. The Wildcats’ 2012 season starts Sept. 1 at Texas A&M-Kingsville with games following at Simon Fraser and Western Oregon before the team’s home-opener on Sept. 22 against Azusa Pacific.

CWU is coming off a 4-6 season, snapping streaks of nine straight non-losing records and five consecutive GNAC championships.

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Six athletes — two with local ties — and one team will be inducted into Central Washington’s athletic hall of fame.

West Valley’s James Atterberry and Prosser’s Mike Huard, both of whom excelled in football for the Wildcats, will be enshrined on April 21 in Nicholson Pavilion.

Huard played fullback and tight end for coach Tom Parry from 1968-71, earning all-Evergreen Conference, all-district and NAIA West Coast honorable mention honors as a senior.

He later embarked on a 26-year football coaching career, including 17 years at Puyallup High School during which his Vikings won the 1987 state championship. Huard also coached three sons at Puyallup, quarterbacks Damon, Brock and Luke.

Damon and Brock both went on to stardom at Washington and later played in the NFL before starting careers in broadcasting. Luke went to North Carolina and is presently the offensive coordinator at Illinois State.

Atterberry caught 151 passes for 2,379 yards from 1990-93 for coach Mike Dunbar. His receiving and yardage totals rank seventh and fourth, respectively, on CWU’s career lists.

Atterberry was a four-year starter and three-time Columbia Football Association all-star who also ranks sixth in career 100-yard receiving games (six), ninth in yards per reception (15.75) and sixth in single-season yards per reception (19.11).

Also to be inducted are Mark Brown, a track and field standout in 1978-79; Rob Hippi, baseball pitcher from 1968-70; Robin McAlpine, wrestling (1981-84); Dr. Jean Putnam, field hockey player and coach from 1968-80; and the 1988 baseball team that was Central’s last such squad to qualify for the NAIA World Series.

Also, current hall of famers Dave Heaverlo and Bill North, both baseball standouts, will have their jerseys retired.

Ceremonies will include with a social hour starting at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner and the program at 6. The event is open to the public and admission costs $35.

Tickets can be obtained by phoning Kim Thomas at 509-963-2762, and are also available at mycentral.cwu.edu/hof.

YAKIMA, Wash. — That five quarterbacks would be included in Blaine Bennett’s fifth Central Washington recruiting class might be misunderstood by some observers.

Yes, Bennett was himself a quarterback, first at Walla Walla High School and later at Whitworth University. But no, he doesn’t collect QBs as a hobby.

“To justify that, we only signed one quarterback last year and felt like we needed some young quarter-backs in the program,” Bennett said Wednesday on the release of CWU’s 28 signees. “But also, high school offenses have changed over the last four or five years, and a lot of coaches in our state are now putting their best athlete at that position. It used to be that the best athlete was probably a running back.

“So we feel like we’ve gotten some excellent athletes who are multiple position possibilities, although they’ll all start by being quarterbacks for awhile.”

Of course the Wildcats do have a quarterback history in the persons of Jon Kitna and Mike Reilly. The probable starter next season will be senior Ryan Robertson, but Bennett clearly wants to begin grooming QBs for the future.

The most highly rated of the newcomers, according to The Seattle Times, are 6-foot-1, 192-pound Jake Nelson of Lake Stevens and Drew Austin (6-2, 180) of Graham-Kapowsin.

Both were white chip selections by the Times — the highest rating is blue, followed by red and then white. Nelson completed 70 percent of his passes for 2,086 yards and 21 touchdowns with only four interceptions for the Vikings, who went 12-1 and reached the Class 4A state semifinals.

Three of Nelson’s teammates also signed with Central — wide receivers Brady Pahukoa and Christian Gasca and linebacker Korey Young.

Pahukoa’s father, Jeff, was an all-conference offensive lineman at Washington in the early 1990s and his uncle, Shane, was a UW safety.

Bennett also wants Central to become a faster team, and mentioned speed as a key ingredient his newest recruiting class.

“We signed some receivers, defensive backs and running backs with legitimate big-play speed,” he said. “This is probably the fastest class we’ve recruited since I’ve been here, and that was very important to us.”

Recruits are told they’ll redshirt during their true freshman seasons, although injuries and other circumstances have occasionally pressed some into varsity play sooner.

Bennett said David Fontenette, a 6-2, 228-pound tight end from Bethel High in Spanaway, is a physically mature prospect who could see playing time next fall.

“He’s an excellent athlete,” Bennett said of Fontenette, CWU’s lone Times red chip. “We tell them all they’ll redshirt, but you never really know. Sometimes a chance presents itself, even for a young guy who’s not quite ready but just gets thrown into the fire.”

Bennett also said the heights and weights listed with his signees are accurate as per measurements taken during the players’ on-campus visits.

“We signed one player who was 6-0 and 190 on his high school roster,” Bennett said. “We get him here and he’s 5-10 and 181. Those are two different people. In this case, he was a good enough athlete that it didn’t really matter.”

Next on Bennett’s agenda is to find a replacement for assistant head coach and defensive coordinator Joe Lorig, who left last month for a job at Arizona State.

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — For Blaine Bennett, finding a replacement for departed assistant head coach and defensive coordinator Joe Lorig is an obvious priority, but it’s a priority that will wait until Central Washington’s recruiting season is over.

“We’re going to get our recruiting class together,” Bennett said Friday, “we’re devoting all our time and attention to that first, and then we’ll sit down and identify the best person for that job. It’s a very important hire for us, with everything I expect that person to do.”

Lorig, who came to Central with Bennett in 2008, has been hired at Arizona State to join the staff of new coach Todd Graham.

“We’re trying to move some people around,” Bennett said, “and if possible we’ll try to hire two people. If not, then this guy needs to be the best person we can find for this job.”

Bennett said recruiting will be one of the areas in which Lorig will be missed.

“Joe did a very good job of recruiting and establishing relationships with high schools around the state,” Bennett said. “He’s a close friend — he played for me at Western Oregon — and we all wish him the very best. Obviously, opportunities like the one he’s getting at Arizona State don’t come along very often.”

Bennett said he will take over Lorig’s recruiting area, which consists of the northwest part of the state and runs south to the SeaTac area.

The CWU coach said he’ll have 13 recruits in Ellensburg today and another group in next Saturday. Signing day is Feb. 1.

The Yaks fell Thursday to Clackamas 40-8 in Oregon City and 28-15 to Southwestern Oregon on Friday. Clackamas is the country’s second-ranked junior college team and SWOC is ranked 10th.
