Local report — Walkenhauer leads Central’s all-conference picks

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Kevin Walkenhauer, a senior from West Valley, was one of six Central Washington baseball players to receive All-GNAC acclaim Tuesday.

Walkenhauer, who pitched and also played second base, shortstop and left field this past season, made the second team. He batted .316 with a team-leading 15 doubles. On the mound, Walkenhauer was 3-3 with a 5.93 earned run average.

Catcher Jake Hammons made the first team while outfielders Anthony Sanelli and Ricky McKinney joined Walkenhauer on the second team. All were seniors.

Senior third baseman Kevin Schneider junior outfielder Chance Plutt received honorable mention.

CWU finished the season 8-24 in conference play and 14-36 overall.

UW, WSU to host events

Washington State University will host A Night With Cougar Athletics on Friday night at La Chateau at 15 North Naches Ave.

The event, which will feature speeches by WSU coaches and recently hired athletic director Bill Moos, will begin at 5:30 with a social hour and silent auction. Dinner and a live auction will start at 6:45.

Central splits final twin bill

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Jake Hammons struck out six in 6 2/3 innings to help Central Washington claim a 4-2 victory over Montana State Billings and a split of the teams’ season-ending doubleheader at Tomlinson Field.

Montana State Billings won the opener 12-10.

Central finished with an 8-24 GNAC record, tied for fourth with Montana State Billings, and a 14-36 overall mark. The Yellowjackets were 11-35 overall.

Kevin Walkenhauer, the West Valley High graduate, capped his college career by going 5-for-8 with five RBI in the doubleheader.

Hammons came within an out of a complete-game victory, but he left after loading the bases. Freshman Jordon Wakefield struck out Kevin Zukaitis to preserve the win and earn the save.

In the opener, Central had a season-high seven errors, and the Wildcat offense stranded 14 runners and grounded into three double plays.

Walkenhauer caps CWU sweep

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Kevin Walkenhauer pitched a five-hitter as Central Washington beat Montana State Billings 3-1 Friday to complete a sweep of their GNAC doubleheader at Tomlinson Field.

CWU won the opener 5-4.

Walkenhauer, a senior from West Valley struck out two and walked one to square his record at 3-3.

Danny Myers backed him with two hits, including a homer, and two RBI.

Jake Hammons and Evan Churlin had three hits apiece in the first game with Hammons tripling and driving in three runs for the Wildcats (7-23 GNAC, 13-25 overall).

Local report — Walkenhauer earns academic honor

ELLENSBURG — West Valley senior Kevin Walkenhauer led a group of six Central Washington baseball players to be named to the GNAC academic all-conference team Tuesday.

Walkenhauer has compiled a 3.87 grade point average in biology, which ranks third in the conference. He was also one of three players to earn all-academic honors for third time.

Other Wildcats honored were Michael McCanna, Kevin Schneider, Evan Churlin, Anthony Sanelli and Ricky McKinney.

COLLEGE TRACK AND FIELD

Gonzalez 2nd in GNAC heptathlon

NAMPA, Idaho — Central Washington’s Raquel Gonzalez, a senior from Kittitas, finished second in the GNAC women’s heptathlon Tuesday.

Gonzalez had a strong finish to the two-day competition, totaling 4,327 points in the seven events.

In the men’s decathlon, Bickleton freshman Andrew Venema finished 12th.

Wolves sweep Wildcats

MONMOUTH, Ore. — Western Oregon swept a doubleheader against Central Washington 4-0, 3-2 on Sunday.

Western Oregon’s Jacob Pettit scattered six hits to earn the shutout in the first game.

In the second game, CWU’s Marcus Evans was 2-for-2, while Kris Henderson and Evan Churlin notched an RBI each.

Wildcats drop two on road

KEIZER, Ore. — Second baseman Kelly Gau drove in seven runs for Central Washington on Saturday but the Wildcats dropped a GNAC doubleheader, 9-7 and 6-5, to Western Oregon at Volcanoes Stadium.

Gau was 3-for-7 for the day with a three-run home run in the sixth inning of the opener for the Wildcats (5-21 GNAC, 11-33 overall).

Saint Martin’s sweeps CWU

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Central Washington fell behind early on Sunday and couldn’t catch up, losing 12-7 and 4-3 to Saint Martin’s in a GNAC baseball doubleheader.

Saint Martin’s went ahead 3-0 before Central had its first turn at bat. Central would have to wait until a fourth-inning double steal and an RBI groundout by Sean Murphy to score their first two runs of the day.

Saint Martin’s responded with two runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth. CWU countered with runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth, before Saint Martin’s delivered the knockout blow in the eighth with three more runs before adding another in the ninth.

Central Washington’s Kevin Walkenhauer, a West Valley graduate, hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth for the final margin.

Saint Martin’s Travis Jones had seven RBI in Game 1.

In the second game, Saint Martin’s (17-23, 12-11 GNAC) scored twice in the third inning, before CWU (11-31, 5-19) responded with an RBI single from Evan Churlin.

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Ricky McKinney’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning lifted Central Washington to a 6-5 win over Saint Martin’s on Saturday and gave the Wildcats a split of their GNAC doubleheader.

The Saints won the opener 11-8 in 10 innings.

Kevin Walkenhauer was 4-for-6 in the first game, then pitched a complete game in the second to square his record at 2-2 for CWU (5-17 GNAC, 11-29 overall).

Local report–State Fair, Renegade open seasons today

YAKIMA — State Fair Raceway and Renegade Raceway will get their seasons up and running today with racing at both local tracks.

Modifieds, Sportsman, Hobby Stock, Pure Stock, Hornets and Bump to Pass will all be in action on State Fair’s dirt oval. The local season spans 14 dates and runs through September.

Grandstands open at 5:30 p.m. with racing at 7.

Renegade opens its drag-racing season today with Street Legal Drags and continues Sunday with the Summit Series.  Gates open at 10 a.m. both days.

COLLEGE TENNIS

Kunkel-Patterson leads Whitman

Davis graduate Kate Kunkel-Patterson helped lift Whitman College past Linfield and into the final of the Northwest Conference Championships on Friday at the Yakima Tennis Club.

With the match tied at 4-4, Kunkel-Patterson rallied for a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Linfield’s Sarah Watanabe in their No. 6 singles match.

Earlier Friday, the top-seeded Whitworth women rolled to a 5-0 semifinal victory over Lewis & Clark. Katie Staudinger, an Eisenhower graduate playing for Whitworth, earned a victory in her No. 2 doubles match.

Whitworth (18-4) will face Whitman (16-8) in today’s noon final.

Men’s results were not available at press time.

PREP BASKETBALL

Farnam named honorary coach

Longtime Eisenhower coach Keith Farnam will serve as the honorary coach for Saturday night’s 17th-annual Northwest Shootout in Portland.

The game pits the top 10 high school seniors from Washington against the top 10 from Oregon, and will be played at the University of Portland.

The Washington team, to be coached by current Ike mentor Pat Fitterer, will include Chelan’s Joe Harris and Ephrata’s Patrick Simon.

Central drops 2 at NW Nazarene

NAMPA, Idaho — A sixth-inning error spoiled Kevin Walkenhauer’s bid for a complete-game victory Friday as Central Washington fell 5-4 to Northwest Nazarene in the second game of a GNAC doubleheader at Elmore Vail Field.

The Crusaders won the first game 11-4.

A senior from West Valley, Walkenhauer scattered nine hits and struck out four in his third start of the season, and also doubled in two at bats.

CWU fell to 4-14 in conference play and 8-26 for the season.

SNOWMOBILING

Brad Sharp wins Modified title

Brad Sharp finished as the season points champion in the pro open modified class at the Rocky Mountain Snowmobile Hillclimb Association’s final circuit stop, the Beaver Mountain Hillclimb in Logan, Utah.

Sharp turned in the fastest qualifying time of the day in one of the event’s two lanes. His nephew, 17-year-old David Sharp Jr., posted the fastest time in the other lane. Brock Sharp, Brad’s 10-year-old son, had the fastest qualifying time in the 120cc class and then won the main event in that class.

After posting third and fourth places at Logan, Brad Sharp finished atop the season points standings in pro open mod and placed third in pro master stock, fourth pro master improved, fifth pro master mod, 10th in pro stock 600.

David Sharp Jr.,  at 17 the circuit’s youngest pro, ended up third in the standings in 800 improved, fifth in 800 stock, fifth in 600 mod, and sixth in both 1000 stock and 1000 improved.

His father, David Sharp, finished second in pro master improved, third in pro master mod — after winning Sunday’s final — and fourth in pro master stock.

Karstens scores ace at YCC

Dick Karstens recorded a hole-in-one during his round Tuesday at the Yakima Country Club. Karstens aced the 141-yard 11th hole using a hybrid wedge.
