Central announces early signee

ELLENSBURG — White River High School standout Connor Williams has signed a letter of intent with Central Washington, coach Desi Storey announced Wednesday.

An infielder, Williams is a three-year letterman for the Hornets and was a South Puget Sound League honorable mention selection last spring at shortstop. As a sophomore he hit .410 and was an all-league first team choice at second base.

Williams has compiled a 3.8 grade point average at White River.

Snowdon, Gosney GNAC first-teamers

YAKIMA, Wash. — Central Washington seniors Andrew Snowden and A.J. Gosney have been named to the all-GNAC baseball first team, highlighting eight all-conference selections for the Wildcats.

Snowden was named first-team catcher and also second-team pitcher. He hit .323 with a team-best 13 doubles, three home runs and 20 runs batted in. On the mound, he went 3-1 with a 3.60 earned-run average in five starts (20 innings).

Gosney, a centerfielder, hit a team-best .385 with eight doubles and 26 RBI. He did not commit an error in 98 chances.

Other second-team selections were junior first baseman Kevin Schneider, junior second baseman Jordan Slesk, and junior outfielder Ricky McKinney. Seniors Frank Donangelo and Josh Murillo were honorable mention.

SPOKANE — Central Washington University junior Nate Wallen and senior Andrew Snowdon have been recognized as the GNAC Hitter and Co-Pitcher of the Week for baseball, respectively, the conference announced.

Wallen, an outfielder, finished with seven hits in nine at-bats in the Wildcats’ four-game series at Northwest Nazarene, hitting game-winning home runs in the second and third games.

Snowdon threw a four-hit shutout in the season finale at Northwest Nazarene. He struck out a career-high 10 in seven innings of work.

Wallen becomes the third Wildcat to earn Hitter of the Week honors, while Snowdon is the third Central player to receive Pitcher of the Week accolades this year.

NAMPA, Idaho — Nate Wallen produced six hits and Andrew Snowdon pitched a second-game shutout as Central Washington ended its season Saturday with an 8-3, 11-0 GNAC sweep of Northwest Nazarene.

Wallen was 6-for-8 with a homer and four RBI for the Wildcats, who finished 12-16 in the conference and 18-28 overall. Snowdon (3-1) struck out 10 without a walk in the second game.

Riverside Christian’s Jimmy VanBeek was 2-for-4 with an RBI in the first game and 1-for-3 in the second for Nazarene (8-23, 15-31).

Wallen homers to lead Central to split

NAMPA, Idaho — Nate Wallen’s pinch-hit three-run homer powered Central Washington to a 7-5 win over Northwest Nazarene on Friday and a split of their GNAC doubleheader at Vail Field.

Wallen’s homer highlighted a six-run sixth inning and helped offset a 6-4 opening-game loss.

The Wildcats (10-16 conference, 16-28 overall) had not played in two and a half weeks. A four-game series last weekend with Western Oregon was canceled due to a suspected case of swine flu on the Monmouth, Ore. campus.

Central and Nazarene will conclude their seasons with another doubleheader today.

For the Crusaders (8-21, 15-29), Jimmy and Ryan Van Beek of Riverside Christian each played well.

Both players had two hits in the first game, with senior first baseman Jimmy Van Beek smacking a double. In the second game, sophomore second baseman Ryan Van Beek singled, homered and drove in two runs and DH Jimmy Van Beek went 1-for-3.

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Raquel Gonzalez of Kittitas and Nick Collins of Zillah held their respective positions for Central Washington in Tuesday’s GNAC multi-event championships at Tomlinson Stadium.

Gonzalez, a junior, held off Western Oregon’s Jacque Helbling for third place in the final women’s heptathlon standings, totaling 4,137 points to Helbling’s 4,131.

Collins, a senior,  was fifth in the men’s decathlon competition with 4,986 points.

The team point totals will count in the GNAC track and field championships scheduled for May 1-2 at Monmouth, Ore. Western Washington compiled 13 points in the decathlon while the Vikings and Western Oregon garnered 15 each in the heptathlon.

Walkenhauer helps CWU sweep

ELLENSBURG — Ricky McKinney hit a walkoff homer to win the first game and West Valley’s Kevin Walkenhauer pitched a five-hitter in the second as Central Washington swept Whitworth 10-9 and 5-1 in a non-league doubleheader Tuesday.

McKinney’s blow led off the bottom of the seventh and enabled the Wildcats (15-27) to weather a seven-run fifth inning.

Andrew Snowdon and Sheldon Santiago each hit two-run homers in Central’s six-run third.

Walkenhauer (1-3) took a no-hitter into the fourth and finished with five strikeouts and one walk.

CWU will be idle for 10 days, returning to action May 2 at home against Western Oregon.

Local Report: Wildcats baseball team splits twin bill

BILLINGS, Mont. — Central Washington scored nine runs over the final three innings to earn a 15-8 victory over host Montana State Billings in game one of a GNAC doubleheader Monday. The Wildcats dropped the finale, 3-2.

Junior Ricky McKinney went a combined 4-for-6, going 2-for-3 in each game and driving in three runs in the opener. Senior Frank Donangelo also drove in three in game one, including a sacrifice fly as part of the Wildcats’ four-run eighth inning. Central then added four insurance runs in the ninth.

Junior pitcher Michael McCanna earned the win after throwing 71?3 innings. He then gave way to senior Andrew Snowdon, who earned his first collegiate save with an inning and two-thirds of one-hit relief.

Josh Murillo (Davis) and Kevin Schneider added two hits apiece as the Wildcats matched a season-high with 18 hits.

In the nightcap, junior Kevin Walkenhauer of West Valley drove home the game-tying run with a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh, but Billings’ Brian Dukart quickly broke the tie with a walk-off home run.

Both teams had complete-game pitching performances from their starters, as Central’s Chris Jackson squared off with Billings’ Steve Scott. Jackson surrendered seven hits in defeat.

Next up, Central (13-27 overall, 9-15 GNAC) will host Whitworth in a doubleheader at 2:30 p.m. today.

Gonzalez, Collins sit well after first day

ELLENSBURG — Junior Raquel Gonzalez (Kittitas) is one of four athletes within 93 points of the lead in the women’s heptathlon following day one of the 2009 GNAC Multi-Event Championships at Tomlinson Stadium. Central’s Nick Collins (Zillah) is currently fifth in the decathlon through five events.

Gonzalez, who scored 2,623 points through four events, trails first-day leader Mandy Keifer of Western Oregon by 81 points. She currently sits just 13 points behind third-place Jacque Helbling, also of WOU.

Collins, the lone Wildcats representative in the decathlon, has a steeper hill to climb on day two. He trails leader Zeb Udell of Western Oregon by 602 points and is currently 237 points behind Alex Harrison of Western Washington, who is in fourth.

The multi-event championships will resume at 10 a.m. today at Tomlinson Stadium, with the men competing in five events and the women in three.

Vlahovich again named Pitcher of Week

SPOKANE — Central Washington senior pitcher Linse Vlahovich has been named the GNAC Pitcher of the Week for softball for the third time this season.

Vlahovich has been victorious in her last six pitching decisions, including complete-game victories over Western Washington (3-1) and Northwest Nazarene (4-2 and 3-0) last week. She also added a save in Saturday’s series finale against the Crusaders. Over her last four appearances, Vlahovich allowed 12 hits in 23 innings and struck out 28 while walking seven. In Vlahovich’s last 341?3 innings, she has allowed just two earned runs.

Pirates hold on to beat Rams

Michael Calderon pitched five scoreless innings to improve to 5-1 this season, leading the Davis Pirates to a 3-2 non-league victory over the West Valley Rams on Monday.

Brian Villegas and Josh WhiteElk drove in Davis’ first two runs in the second inning, and Marquis Jackson scored the third and deciding run on a hit by Greg Hatta in the third.

Andrew Gonzalez was the only player to have multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-3 with a double for Davis (2-4 in league).

West Valley rallied in the top of the sixth inning, as Cory Urquhart hit a two-run home run.

Davis and West Valley will play again today at West Valley starting at 4 p.m.

College report: YVCC baseball sweeps Spokane

SPOKANE, Wash. — Kai Miller pitched a six-hitter and didn’t allow an earned run in the first game, and Tim Goins’ two-run, ninth-inning single rallied Yakima Valley in the second as the Yaks swept Spokane 6-5 and 4-3 in an Eastern Region doubleheader Saturday.

The victories kept Yakima Valley (5-7 region, 13-16 overall) in contention for an NWAACC playoff berth.

After YVCC scored twice in the top of the inning, the Sasquatch loaded the bases in the bottom half on back-to-back singles and a sacrifice bunt off starter Bruce Amende, followed by and an intentional walk by reliever Levi Mitchum.

But Mitchum struck out Spokane’s fourth and fifth hitters to end the game.

YVCC visits Walla Walla on Wednesday.

Vlahovich wins 15th for ‘Cats

LACEY — Linse Vlahovich pitched a five-inning three-hitter to increase her school-record season win total to 15 Saturday as Central Washington blanked Saint Martin’s 8-0 in the first game of a GNAC doubleheader.

The Saints won the second game 8-0 in six innings.

Vlahovich (15-6), a senior from Spokane, struck out five and walked three en route to her second shutout of the year. She lowered her earned run average to 2.23 and has pitched 13 complete games.

Molly Coppinger drove in two runs to lead CWU (17-7 GNAC, 21-16 overall).

Hard-luck Yaks drop pair

Unable to get key hits at the right time, Yakima Valley dropped an Eastern Region doubleheader to Treasure Valley on Saturday at Dunbar Field, 2-1 in nine innings and 5-3.

YVCC (6-12 region, 9-19 overall) produced nine hits off TV’s Valerie Yingling in the first game and eight more in the second but nonetheless saw its losing streak reach eight.

Mack places at Vernacchia

BELLINGHAM — Central Washington’s Bryan Mack placed in two events Friday in the Ralph Vernacchia Invitational track and field meet hosted by Western Washington University.

Mack was second in the men’s triple jump at 45 feet, 7 1/4 inches and third in the 100 meters in 11.10 seconds.

Katie McMeel was the only other Wildcat to place, finishing third in the women’s javelin at 129-02.

Central splits at Saint Martin’s

LACEY, Wash. — Jordan Slesk’s two-run single highlighted a four-run 10th inning Friday as Central Washington beat Saint Martin’s 9-5 in the first game of a GNAC doubleheader.

The Wildcats (7-11, 11-23) managed only four hits in a 1-0 second-game loss.

Local Report: CWU swept by College of Idaho

CALDWELL, Idaho — It wasn’t the collective 40-9 beating they took a week earlier in Ellensburg, but Central Washington’s Wildcats dropped two more games to College of Idaho in non-conference baseball action Tuesday.

The 6-0, 10-7 losses dropped CWU to 10-22 this season while the NAIA power Coyotes improved to 24-10.

The Wildcats, beaten 27-7 and 13-2 on their on field on March 31, managed only four hits in the first game off three COI pitchers in the first game.

Kevin Schneider doubled and homered and Joe Schuster homered and drove in two runs in the second.

Central moves back to GNAC play with a Friday doubleheader at Saint Martin’s.

Yaks’ bats silenced again

WENATCHEE — Yakima Valley’s fastpitch team continued to struggle offensively Tuesday, enduring its third and fourth consecutive shutouts in a 2-0, 8-0 Eastern Region doubleheader loss to Wenatchee Valley.

The Yaks, blanked twice Saturday by Walla Walla, fell to 6-8 in region play and 9-15 overall. The Knights improved to 10-4 and 14-6.

Bri Compton fired a five-hitter in the first game, out-dueling Yakima Valley’s Hanna Kranz who pitched a five-hitter with four strikeouts and one walk.

In the second game, Kim Harter limited YVCC to two singles.

Yakima Valley hosts Blue Mountain for a doubleheader Friday set to start at 2 p.m.

Parsons claims Spring Classic title

Ryan Parsons from Wenatchee swept past Luke Thompson 6-1, 6-2 to capture the Men’s Open Singles Division championship in the Yakima Tennis Club Spring Classic tournament that concluded last weekend.

In other finals, Oscar Matesanz from Seattle won the 3.5 singles title, Eric Anderson and Aaron McCausland won the 3.5 doubles title, Jeannie Friehauf won the women’s 3.0 singles crown, and Sasha Hammond and Deb Jones won the 3.0 doubles title.
