Central Splits with NW Nazarene

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Three was indeed the magic number for Central Washington’s Keola Rubin in the first game of a baseball doubleheader against Northwest Nazarene.

In the 7-4 CWU victory, Rubin had three hits, three RBI and a triple. CWU’s Kevin Schneider chipped in with a pair of hits, including a home run, and two RBI.

In the second game, Northwest Nazarene (7-11 overall, 1-4 GNAC) jumped out to a four-run lead in the first inning and never trailed, winning 9-4.

Schneider led the way for the Wildcats (3-11, 1-1) with another two more hits, including another homer.

Joel Oliver had three RBI for NNU, while Cameron Louie drove in two additional runs.

The games were the conference openers for Central Washington.

L-C State downs Central

LEWISTON, Idaho — Brian Burke’s two-run homer in the fifth inning lifted Lewis-Clark State to a 3-1 win over Central Washington on Sunday at Harris Field.

Central out-hit the Warriors 9-8, but managed only a third-inning run off starter Colby Hawk en route to its eighth straight loss.

Kris Henderson singled and doubled for the Wildcats (2-10). Burke had two hits for L-C State (14-1).

Walkenhauer HR goes for naught

LEWISTON, Idaho — Kevin Walkenhauer’s two-run homer in the ninth inning made it a two-run game, but Central Washington was unable to complete the comeback and absorbed a 6-4 non-league loss to Lewis-Clark State on Saturday at Harris Field.

The loss was CWU’s seventh straight, leaving the Wildcats 2-9. L-C state, which scored all its runs in the sixth inning with Kawika Emsley-Pai hammering a two-run double, improved to 13-1.

Chico State sweeps Central

CHICO, Calif. — Chico State maintained its torrid hitting Sunday, beating Central Washington 14-9 and 20-1 to sweep a four game series.

Johnny Ray followed up his three home-run performance from Saturday by hitting another in the first game Sunday.

Central’s Kevin Walkenhauer hit his first homer of the season in the fourth inning of the first game.

In the second game Adrian Bringas had four RBI for Chico State (10-2), while Michael Schultz contributed three more.

In the four games, Central (2-8) was outscored 70-13.

Chico State sweeps Central

CHICO, Calif. — Johnny Hay had three of Chico State’s eight home runs, and the Wildcats pounded out 40 total hits in posting a 24-2, 12-1 sweep of Central Washington in a baseball doubleheader Saturday.

Chico State (8-2) homered five times and had 13 extra-base hits, part of a 24-hit attack, in the opener. Michael Murphy led the way, going 4-for-4 and scoring four times.

Hay was 4-for-4, including two homers, with four RBI in the second game for 16th-ranked Chico State.

Central (2-6) had just seven hits and committed three errors in the opener, and had only four hits in the second game.

Central rally comes up short

LEWISTON, Idaho — Central Washington scored three runs in the eighth inning to reduce a five-run deficit to two, but nonetheless fell to Western Oregon 6-4 in the Guardian Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning Tournament on Saturday at Lewis-Clark State College.

Pinch-hitter Kris Henderson’s two-run double highlighted the rally for Central (2-4). Chance Plutt was 3-for-4 for the Wildcats.

Errors costly for Central vs. SMU

LEWISTON, Idaho — Brett Bielec doubled and homered, but Central Washington committed three errors which led to six unearned runs in a 10-3 loss to Saint Martin’s in the Guardian Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning Tournament on Friday at Lewis-Clark State College.

Bielic, a sophomore from Port Orchard, led the game off with a homer, but the Saints scored five unearned runs in the sixth inning for an 8-1 lead.

Jake Hammons tripled for Central (2-3).

CWU splits with Puget Sound

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Two home runs from Chance Plutt in the second game of a doubleheader helped Central Washington split with Puget Sound.

The Wildcats bounced back from a 12-11 defeat in the first game to beat the Loggers 9-6 in the nightcap, which was called after 5-1/2 innings because of darkness.

In the first game, Jake Hammons had a two-run homer in the seventh inning for CWU. Plutt’s pair of two-run homers came in the second and fourth innings of game two.

Central splits season openers

ELLENSBURG, Wash.  — Jake Hammons had a two-run single, and Jake Millbauer allowed two hits in 5 2/3 innings to lead Central Washington to a 4-1 second-game victory over Puget Sound, giving the Wildcats a split of their season-opening baseball doubleheader Saturday at Tomlinson Field.

Puget Sound won the opener 7-5.

Hammons had a four-hit day, including three in the first game.

In the second game, Millbauer retired 12 straight after surrendering a solo homer to Mark Rockey.

The teams play two more games today, starting at 11 a.m.

Central announces early signee

ELLENSBURG — White River High School standout Connor Williams has signed a letter of intent with Central Washington, coach Desi Storey announced Wednesday.

An infielder, Williams is a three-year letterman for the Hornets and was a South Puget Sound League honorable mention selection last spring at shortstop. As a sophomore he hit .410 and was an all-league first team choice at second base.

Williams has compiled a 3.8 grade point average at White River.
