MONMOUTH, Ore. — Katie Torland made four 3-pointers, connected on 8 of 13 shots and finished with 29 points to lead Western Oregon to a 69-58 win over Central Washington in GNAC play Saturday afternoon.
Senior Shaina Afoa made 7 of 10 field-goal attempts and scored a season-high 16 points and Sophie Russell led with 17 points for Central, which fell to 3-6 in conference and 6-13 overall.

Local report–WV’s Curtis to sign with Utah Valley

West Valley’s Haley Curtis, the CBBN’s co-Most Valuable Player in girls soccer last season, will sign an NCAA letter of intent with Utah Valley University today.
A forward who scored 75 career goals for the Rams, Curtis helped West Valley reach the Class 3A state final four as a senior. Utah Valley in Orem, Utah, is a Division I school in the Great West Conference.
The Rams have several other NWAACC commitments — Breanna Ashbaugh, Morgan MacDonald and Chelsea Nell to Yakima Valley for soccer and Emily Yost to Blue Mountain for volleyball.
YVCC women’s soccer also has commitments from Eisenhower’s Darci Cline and Bianca Flores, Wapato’s Elizabeth Montes and Toppenish’s Esmeralda Cano.
East Valley’s Jessica Baken is headed to Columbia Basin College for soccer, and Selah’s Veronica Sanchez and Alicia Cikauskas have committed to YVCC for volleyball.

GNAC honors for CWU pair
Central Washington University’s Sara Bergner and Tyler Fischer were named Great Northwest Athletic Conference co-Athletes of the Week in their respective sports.
Bergner was tabbed for women’s basketball along with Sydney Benson of Seattle Pacific. Bergner led the Wildcats with 29 points and ranked second on the team with 13 rebounds and seven assists in two road wins.
Fischer’s honor came in men’s indoor track and field. He met a provisional NCAA Division II national qualifying standard in the weight throw at the UW Invitational.
Wildcats blast MSU Billings

BILLINGS, Mont. — Brittany Duerr scored a career-high 24 points as Cental Washington routed Montana State Billings 83-64 in GNAC women’s basketball Saturday night in Alterowitz Gymnasium.
The Wildcats’ second straight road win improved them to 3-4 in conference play and 6-11 overall.
Sophie Russell scored 19 points, Sara Bergner 11 and freshman reserve Stacy Albrecht 10 for CWU, which shot 49 percent compared with 38 for the Yellowjackets (2-5, 9-9).
Central dominated on the boards, 43-30 with Shana Afoa grabbing 12 rebounds, and made 19 of 21 second-half free throws.
The Wildcats led 34-28 at halftime, then steadily pulled away for their first win in seven tries at Billings.

Hot-shooting CWU smacks Saints

LACEY, Wash. — Jenn Jacobs scored 19 points and Sara Bergner added 18 as Central Washington shot 55 percent en route to a 78-69 GNAC women’s basketball victory Thursday night over Saint Martin’s at Marcus Pavilion.
Colleen Betteridge added 10 points for the Wildcats (2-4 GNAC, 5-11 overall), who connected on 52 percent of their shots in the first half and 58 percent in the second.
Jacobs, in her first start of the season, was 6 for 11 from the field and 6 for 6 from the foul line. Betteridge added five assists.
CWU, which had lost three straight, visits Montana State Billings on Saturday.
Dara Zack scored 24 points to lead the Saints (1-6, 7-11).

Dunbar lifts WWU women over Central

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Amanda Dunbar scored 22 points and Western Washington held Central Washington to 29 percent shooting in an 80-46 defeat of the Wildcats in GNAC action Thursdsay night in Nicholson Pavilion.
Stacy Albrecht, a 6-foot-2 freshman, was the only double-figure scorer with 11 points for the Wildcats, who lost their third straight game and fell to 1-4 in the conference and 4-11 overall. Western improved to 5-0 and 14-2.
Lauren Hefflin had 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Vikings, who scored the first 11 points and never looked back en route to their fifth straight victory.

Leah Stepovich had 12 points and Hanna Johansson 10 for the Seawolves (1-0, 11-1), who led 31-13 at halftime in the swiftly-played game in which only 12 free throws were shot.

Sara Bergner had 17 points, reserve Brittany Duerr 16 and Shaina Afoa 12 points and 12 rebounds as CWU improved to 3-7 going into its GNAC opener Thursday at home against nationally-ranked Alaska Anchorage.
Central shot 56 percent en route to a 47-28 halftime lead and outrebounded the Penguins (3-8) of San Rafael, Calif. 46-38.
Dominican’s Alisha Flaaten led all scorers with 24 points.
