Holtman takes over CWU fastpitch
July 31, 2010 by YH-R Sports
ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Already part of the program’s most memorable moments, Mallory Holtman on Friday was named the head coach of the Central Washington fastpitch team.
Holtman becomes the program’s third head coach since it began in 1993. Nancy Katzer coached the Wildcats for two seasons before Gary Frederick took over and led the program for 16 years.

Western Oregon's Sara Tucholsky is carried around the bases by Central Washington's Liz Wallace, left, and Mallory Holtman after injuring her knee following her home run during their softball game Saturday April 26, 2008, in Ellensburg, Wash. With two runners on base and a strike against her, Tucholsky uncorked her best swing and did something she had never done, in high school or college. Her first home run cleared the center-field fence. But it appeared to be the shortest of dreams come true when she missed first base, started back to tag it and collapsed with a knee injury. As a Wildcats player in 2008, she and teammate Liz Wallace earned national recognition when they helped Western Oregon’s Sara Tucholsky around the bases after she hit a home run but suffered a knee injury when she missed first base and went back to tag it.
The display of sportsmanship won the “Best Moment” ESPY at ESPN’s annual awards show in 2008.
Last year, as a graduate assistant coach, she helped guide the Wildcats to their first postseason berth.
“I am excited to remain in Ellensburg and to be a continued part of Central softball,” Holtman said in news release from the school. “I have been proud to be a part of the success that has been created over the past seven years with this program, but I also look forward to leading this program into the future.”
Holtman set several CWU records and capped her career by being named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year honors in 2008. She is one of only two players in GNAC history to earn first-team all-conference honors four times.
She batted .365 for her career with school records in home runs (35), RBI (128) and hits (206).
“Mallory is a rising star in the sport of softball,” CWU athletic director Jack Bishop said in the release. “She has been the face of this program for quite a long time now.”
Frederick steps down as Central’s softball coach
June 8, 2010 by YH-R Sports
ELLENSBURG — After coaching Central Washington University’s softball program for all but two seasons in its 18-year history, Gary Frederick has resigned as head coach, ending a multi-sport coaching career that spanned over 40 years.
The 72-year-old Frederick lifted the program to its two best seasons in 2009 and 2010, earning Great Northwest Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors each of those seasons.
“I have enjoyed my many, many years coaching at Central,” Frederick said in a CWU release. “I would like to remain active with the program in any way that I can. I am still healthy and still love coaching.”
The Wildcats set a school record for victories in a season with 33 in 2009, and then broke that mark with a 40-15 campaign and the program’s first-ever conference championship this past spring.
Frederick, a 1959 Central graduate, was far more at CWU than just the softball coach. He spent 11 seasons as the head baseball coach (1968-1978), 11 more seasons as the head women’s basketball coach (1982-1993), served as the school’s athletic director from 1980 to 1999 and was also an assistant football coach for 17 years.

The regional tournament is a double-elimination format, with the winners of each of the regionals squaring off in a best-of-three super regional May 21-22.
Central faced two of the three regional opponents in the regular season, defeating both Hawaii Pacific (3-0) and Cal State Monterey Bay (5-0) at the Tournament of Champions in Turlock, Calif., in March.
The Wildcats are arguably the hottest team in the West region, having won 13 consecutive games to end the regular season. Monson batted a conference- and school-record .522 during the regular season, including a Division II record 40-game hitting streak.
Petrich (.401, 16 HR, 64 RBI) and Haupert (.351, 18 HR, 62 RBI) combined for 34 home runs and 126 runs batted in.

Central Washington led the all-star selections, placing five players on the first team and one on the second team. Two of its first-team selections — Monson and Hadenfeld — were unanimous. Turn to Page 2B for a complete list.
