YAKIMA, Wash. — It’s time to celebrate at Yakima Speedway.

Having been under the ownership and guidance of Ted Pollock since 1965, the racing track is hosting a special 45th anniversary event Saturday during its Mid-Season Championships.

In an effort to pack the grandstands, the Speedway has offered 25-ticket booklets for $50 and the promotion has been a big success so far with 4,200 tickets already pre-sold. Some booklets are still available, and those without one of the specially discounted tickets would have to pay the normal price, which is $13 for adults.

Gates will open early at 2 p.m. with plenty of extra activities such as remote-control car racing, a jump castle, face-painting, fair-style food concessions and music.

The Speedway’s growing Super Late Model Challenge Series will stage its first event in a month. The June 19 race was rained out and rescheduled for Sept. 4.

Defending champion Owen Riddle of Naches is the Challenge Series points leaders after four races in the 11-race campaign. Yakima’s Erick Hargraves is 12 points back in second and Portland’s Joey Tanner is third.

The other racing classes competing Saturday include, with point leaders, Sportsman (Jason Huffines), Pure Stocks (Jay Younker), Hornets (Greg Gargett), Youth Hornets (Joe Roberts) and Bump To Pass (Allen Reid).
Opening cermonies begin at 6 p.m. with racing to follow.

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — As expected, Central Washington’s quarterback ranks have increased during the summer.

The newest member is Alex Cate, a 6-foot-1, 195-pounder who will transfer from Oklahoma State and will have one year of eligibility with the Wildcats, according to an Ellensburg newspaper report.

Cate is from Cottonwood, Utah, near Salt Lake City, and was a prep All-American, passing for 2,800 yards and 34 touchdowns as a senior. He has been a backup at OSU.

At Central, which begins preseason workouts Aug. 6, Cate will compete with Ryan Robertson, David Weisner and Jordan Durbin for the starting job.

Robertson, who will be a redshirt sophomore, started the first eight games last season before being replaced by Cole Morgan, a senior transfer from Western Washington.

The Wildcats, who lost 23 seniors from last year’s 12-1 team that finished the regular season ranked No. 1 nationally and reached the NCAA Division II playoff quarterfinals, open their season at home Aug. 28 against Minnesota Duluth.
