PULLMAN, Wash. — Despite strong winds, Dan and Ryan Whitaker had little trouble navigating a difficult Palouse Ridge layout to run away with the 56th Washington State Men’s Bestball Championship on Friday.

The Whitakers, who led by four entering the final round, followed up an opening 62 with an 8-under 64 for an 18-under score of 126 and a nine-shot victory over David Nuhn and Drew Reinland.

The Ellensburg brothers took charge when Ryan made a 40-foot eagle putt on the par-5 fifth. They added six birdies and had no bogeys to finish as one of just eight teams under par in the final round.

“We just tried to keep it loose out there,” Dan said in a release from the Washington State Golf Association. “We like the wind so we were comfortable playing in it.”

“Dan encouraged me to be more aggressive than I normally would be” Ryan said in the same release. “The biggest factor was his (Dan’s) putter. It really came alive this week.”

Sunnyside’s Mike VanWingerden and Grandview’s Sota Nozaka closed with a 74 to finish 10th at 142, a stroke ahead of three teams that included Ray Gallipo and Ward Jackson from Yakima, who closed with a 73.

In the 15th Washington State Senior Men’s Bestball, Yakima’s Bill Adkison and Bruce Steelman struggled Friday, shooting 76 to fall from third place to a tie for 11th at 143.

YAKIMA, Wash. — Standing over her approach shot on the 18th hole, Leslie Folsom said she did everything right — except for one thing.

“I didn’t factor in the wind,” she said of the shot that was knocked down just enough by one of Friday’s occasional gusts, leading to a two-putt par and a playoff.

About 20 minutes later, Folsom was standing over nearly the identical shot on 18 and didn’t repeat her earlier miscalculation.

The golfer from Rainier Country Club knocked her approach from about 75 yards out to within inches of the cup, leading to a tap-in par on the first playoff hole and a victory over Pat Terry in the 60th Blossom Invitational at the Yakima Country Club.

“When she hit that shot, I just went, ‘Ohh,’” said Terry, from Wenatchee Country Club, who then came up short on her par putt to extend the match.

“I couldn’t have played that shot any better,” said Folsom, who won the 2010 Blossom and lost to Anne Carr on the second playoff hole last year. “I could see it (the shot) and feel it and then I was able to execute it exactly the way I wanted.

“On the way out to my car, I gave myself a little pat on the back and told myself, ‘You won it.’”

Folsom’s brilliant shot came moments after Terry, sitting about 85 yards out, did exactly what Folsom had done in regulation.

“I didn’t factor in the wind,” she said. “I told myself not to be short — and I came up a tiny bit short.”

As a result, Terry’s shot ended up in the same spot as Folsom in regulation, on the front edge of the green with an uphill putt from about 15 feet. Her putt to extend the playoff was on line but a couple of revolutions short, stopping an agonizing inch or two from going in.

“I don’t mind losing to such a nice shot,” Terry said of Folsom’s approach, adding that she was just happy to play after almost withdrawing because of a bad back. “It’s a treat to compete with such good players.”

Both Folsom and Terry staged a final-round rally after starting Friday’s play four shots behind Denise Kieffer. But Kieffer, as Terry put it, “had one really, really, really, really bad hole,” on the front and the other two moved past her and were tied at the turn.

Folsom quickly opened a three-shot lead after 12, but Terry caught her by going birdie-par on 15 and 16, while Folsom bogeyed both.

“Even though I had the lead, I told myself, I’ve got to finish,” Folsom said. “When we got to the 17th tee, I told myself, ‘Let’s start over.’”

Both players finished with pars to cap identical rounds of 77 for two-day totals of 155, one shot better than Sue Ursino, who closed with a 75, and two better than Kieffer.

“It was a little nerve-racking. I had to just gut it out,” said Folsom, also giving credit to fellow competitor Charisse Spada, who caddied for her in the playoff. “Charisse helped keep me calm … and I trust her judgment.”

Claudette Haubner from Apple Tree was the low net winner with a 145 total.

Also in the Championship Flight, Nancy Mills from Salishan was the net winner at 145. In First Flight, Terri Jackson from the Yakima Country Club was the gross winner (172), with Dee Hanich from Everett the net winner (149). In Second Flight, Cheryl Lienesch from Twin Lakes won gross (183), and Judy Jones from the Yakima Elks won net (152).

YAKIMA, Wash. — Denise Kieffer has a put herself in a strong position to capture her first Blossom Invitational title.

All she’ll have to do today is hold off two former champions who are her closest pursuers.

Kieffer, from Fircrest Golf Club, fired an opening-round of 3-over par 74 to open a four-shot lead over Pat Terry and Leslie Folsom on Thursday at the Yakima Country Club.

Folsom, from the Rainier Country Club, was the 2010 winner, while Terry, from the Wenatchee Country Club, won in 1997.

Only one local golfer has won in the event’s previous 59 events and it appears that streak will continue. The closest local golfer to Kieffer is Pat Martin, but she’s 10 shots back after an 84. Nancy Eglin is another shot behind at 85.

Brenda Batali from the Yakima Country Club is the low-net leader at 68, one shot ahead of fellow country club-member Shirley Boggess.

Today’s final round begins at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start. The public is welcome to attend.

FIRST-ROUND RESULTS

Championship Flight

Gross: 1, Denise Kieffer (Fircrest) 74; 2, (tie) Pat Terry (Wenatchee) 78, Leslie Folsom (Rainier) 78; 4, Gretchen Klein (Grays Harbor) 79; 5, Nancy Mills (Salishan) 80.

Net: 1, Brenda Batali (Yakima Country Club) 68; 2, Shirley Boggess (YCC) 69; 3, (tie) Cheryl Lienesch (Twin Lakes) 70, Claudette Haubner (Apple Tree) 70, Debbie Holbrook (YCC) 70, Nancy Mills (Salishan) 70; 7, (tie) Denise Kieffer (Fircrest) 71, Marie Halverson (YCC) 71.

Whitaker advances in qualifying

ROSLYN, Wash. — Dan Whitaker overcame the elements and a talented field to win the U.S. Open local qualifier Thursday at Suncadia’s Rope Rider Course.

Despite wind gusting up to 25 miles per hour, Whitaker fired a 1-under par 71 to claim medalist honors and, more importantly, one of the seven spots in the U.S. Open Sectional qualifier that were up for grabs Thursday.

Whitaker started quickly, shooting a 3-under 33 on the front nine, highlighted by a hole-out eagle on the par 4 ninth hole.

“I was in the left rough and there was a hard wind from my left so I hit a punch pitching wedge and it just hooked in,” Whitaker said in a news release from the Washington State Golf Association.

Five other local golfers took part, including former Riverside Christian standout Matthew Crockett, who tied for 15th with a 75.

Ellensburg’s Keith Crimp tied for 29th at 77, Goldendale’s Zach Wanderscheid and Cle Elum’s Rylee Iacolucci were in a group tied for 36th at 78, and Selah’s Barry Walters shot a 90.

COLLEGE FASTPITCH

Yaks place 2 on all-star team

YAKIMA, Wash. — Yakima Valley’s Jessie Ihly and Arlene Futch have been named to the NWAACC East Region all-star team.

Ihly, a freshman from Selah, made the first team as a designated hitter/designated player. Futch, a sophomore from Mountain Home, Idaho, made the second team as an outfielder.

YAKIMA, Wash. — The Blossom Invitational annually brings the top women golfers from around the region to the Yakima Country Club for a two-day tournament.

And for the past 45 years, one of those out-of-towners has left with the championship.

In the 60th edition of the event, set to tee-off with a 9 a.m. shotgun start Thursday, six Yakima Valley golfers will try to wrest control of the championship from the visitors.

Leading the locals will be eight-time Women’s City champion Pat Martin and Nancy Eglin, who has captured the past five city tournaments and six overall.

Eglin was fourth at last year’s Blossom while Martin was fifth.

At least one hurdle will be out of their way as defending champion Anne Carr of Renton’s Fairwood Country Club is not entered.

Still, the entry list reads as a who’s-who of the Blossom:

• 15-time champion Ann Swanson of Sand Point (Idaho) Country Club.

• Seven-time champion Sue Ursino of Sahalee (Sammamish) Country Club.

• Three-time champions Mimi Racicot of Rainier (Seattle) Golf and Country Club and Charisse Spada of Waverly (Portland) Country Club.

• Two-time champion Jani Japar of Rainier.

• One-time champions Leslie Folson of Rainier and Pat Terry of Wenatchee Golf and Country Club.

All told, the seven golfers have accounted for 22 of the past 30 championships.

Dorothy Carratt Messinger is the only Yakima golfer to capture the Blossom when she won the last of her three titles in 1966. She also won in 1957 and 1962.

MOSES LAKE, Wash. — Yakima Valley swung the bats well Wednesday in its East Region doubleheader with Big Bend, totaling 29 hits. But the Yaks didn’t do well enough in other aspects of the game to avoid a 5-4, 9-8 sweep that dropped them out of first place.

Columbia Basin, with a sweep of Blue Mountain, took a two-game lead on YVCC with two games remaining. The Yaks host Walla Walla on Saturday while CBC visits Spokane.

YAKIMA, Wash. — Ellensburg’s Keith Crimp was able to master devilish pin positions when others couldn’t, and cruised to his second consecutive Yakima Valley Seniors Invitational golf title Saturday at SunTides Golf Course.

Crimp was the only one to manage an under-par round, firing a 1-under 69 to go with his 71 Friday at Mount Adams, which gave him a three-stroke lead going into Saturday’s final round.

The difficult pin positions cost most of Crimp’s challengers, as they were unable to gain significant movement. Closest to Crimp at the end were former champions Bill Adkison and Troy Wilmoth, as well as Ron Wyles, who all finished six strokes back.

Mount Adams’ Lyn Dasso captured the net championship, parlaying his 8-handicap into a 7-under 134 total.

“Yes, the pin positions were difficult,” the 62-year-old Crimp acknowledged. “I got lucky a few times and made a few putts, too.”

Crimp sandwiched three birdies around just two bogeys during his round.

The fifth renewal of the tournament, limited to golfers 50 years of age and older, attracted a field of 120, its largest yet.
