			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>YAKIMA, Wash. — The Yakima Griffins won the Washington State Rugby Championship, beating the Shelton Savages 55-10 on May 20.</p>
<p>The Griffins, who beat the Priarie Highlanders 53-19 in the semifinals, finished 10-1 for the season, outscoring their opponents 275-91.</p>
<p>Four Griffins were selected for the Northwest all-star team — Ronnie Roosendaal, Tyler Enfield, Steven Stiekema, and Darion Taylor. They will play in front of national team selectors on June 3 and then head to Boise, Idaho, to play against other territorial teams.</p>
<p>The other Griffin team members are Aaron Beck, Jaykob Schilperoot, Riley Reynolds, Mike McCarthy, Brock Linde, Jorge Lozano, Gage Neiffer, Tyler Greenwood, Jonathan Caveness, Brandon McClean, Zach Boss, David Vargus, Colby Morin, Jessie Sargent, Aidan Lyall, Zach Taylor, Anthony Betancourth, Ben Apple, Christopher Ferraro, Joey Bird, Nick Averett, Ben Oravetz and Jerry Potts.</p>

<p>The Yakima Lightning third-grade girls team won its division in the Best in the West Tournament, beating the Spokane Locamotives in the title game.</p>
<p>On the way to the championship, the Lightning beat the Locomotives, Burbank, and the Harrah Panthers.</p>
<p>Team members are Gillyan Landis, Lily Sigler, Hayley Stohr, Brooke Silvernail, Trista Hull, Haiden Harrington, Izzy Roberts and Gillian Martin. They are coached by Pat Stohr and Brian Hull.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>YAKIMA, Wash. — Yakima’s Kelsey Hyvonen of Gymnastics Plus finished fifth in the all-around at the USA Gymnastics Level 9 Western Nationals earlier this month in Boise, Idaho.</p>
<p>Competing in her second Western Nationals, Hyvonen took second place in the floor exercise with a score of 9.35, and was sixth in the vault with a 9.375. She also posted scores of 9.25 in the uneven bars and 8.95 in the beam for a total 36.925.</p>
<p>Fellow Gymnastics Plus gymnast Tamara Allred finished with an all-around score of 34.725. Her top event was the uneven bars, in which she scored a 9.125. She also scored an 8.80 in the beam, 8.45 in the floor exercise and 8.35 in the vault.</p>
<p>Both Hyvonen and Allred competed in the senior D age group (17- and 18-year-olds).</p>

<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><strong>Local Best in the West finishes</strong></span></p>
<p>The 26th annual Best in the West tournament wrapped up with the girls tournaments last weekend. The boys had played the weekend before.</p>
<p>In all, more than 100 games were played on dozens of courts in the Yakima Valley.</p>

<p>Third grade: West Valley 4th, Huskies 6th. Fourth grade: Sagebrush Hoops 1st, Tar Heels 4th, High Definition 5th. <p><strong>GOLF:</strong> La Salle High School will hold its fifth annual La Salle Foundation Tournament, honoring Tom O’Brien, on May 4 at Apple Tree Golf Course. Check-in begins at noon, followed by a BBQ lunch, and a 1:30 p.m. shotgun start. Cost is $125 per person or $500 for a four-person team, which includes beverages, appetizers, and an awards reception/raffle following the tournament. <p>• The 18th annual West Valley Dollars for Scholars golf tournament will be May 2 at Apple Tree Golf Course, starting at 1:30 p.m. Cost is $115 per person or $450 per team, which includes carts, catered dinner, snacks and a raffle entry. <p>• The First Tee of Yakima and the Yakima Parks and Rec, partnering with Kiddin’ Around, will offer Golfin’ Around, a free event Sunday, May 6 at Fisher Golf Course. Youths ages 5-14 can learn to play golf. Equipment will be provided.
