YAKIMA, Wash. — The Yakima Reds will not return for a 16th season in the USL Premier Development League.

Jay Preble, the director of communications for the United Soccer League, confirmed Friday that the Reds franchise was not renewed for 2011 and that former Yakima coach and co-owner Alex Silva is the owner of the new North Sound SeaWolves franchise in Everett.

In December, former players Al Valencia and Jake Sagare, along with former coach Hector Vega confirmed they had heard rumors that the team was ceasing operations, but none knew if that was in fact true at the time.

The PDL is the top under-23 men’s league in North America. It allows players to maintain their college eligibility while playing in a professional atmosphere. It is three rungs below Major League soccer on the United States soccer ladder.

The Reds, started by Yakima businessman Jere Irwin in 1995, qualified for the postseason three times, most recently in 2000 when they advanced to the national semifinals.

Their most recent success came in 2008 when they reached the first round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup competition, falling to the Harrisburg City Islanders of the USL Second Division.

After the 2008 season, Irwin sold the team to Perry Piercy, who in turn sold half of the franchise to Silva in December 2009.

Repeated calls to Silva and Piercy were not returned Friday.

YAKIMA, Wash. — Alex Silva, who coached the Yakima Reds last season, has been announced as the new owner of a Premier Development League franchise in Everett.

North Sound SeaWolves FC will begin play in 2011 and play home games at Mariner High School, according to a news release from the league.

What this means for the future of the Yakima Reds was not immediately clear.

The Yakima Reds do not appear in the 2011 PDL standings listed on the SeaWolves website, while the Reds’ website has been stripped down from last season.

Former players Al Valencia, Jake Sagare and former coach Hector Vega confirmed they had heard rumors that the team is ceasing operations but none knew if that was in fact true.

Neither Silva nor Reds co-owner Perry Piercy responded to requests for comment on Friday night.

The Reds have featured numerous local players since beginning play in 1995 and have reached the playoffs three times, including a national semifinals appearance in 2000 and a U.S. Open Cup berth in 2008.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Selah’s Rick Becker and Ellensburg’s Joe Sheeran won their respective age-group divisions in the 10,000-meter finals on Saturday at the USA Masters Track & Field Championships.

Becker, doubling back after winning the 5,000 on Thursday, captured the 55-59 division of the 10,000 with a time of 35 minutes, 2.69 seconds — nearly two minutes ahead of second place.

Sheeran won the 50-54 race by 10 seconds, clocking 34:41.54. Sheeran was second in the 5,000 on Thursday.

Becker and Sheeran competed for Club Northwest.

PDL SOCCER

Reds fall 3-2 in finale

YAKIMA, Wash. — The Yakima Reds rallied to tie the match twice but eventually fell 3-2 to the Washington Crossfire in their final PDL Northwest match of the season Saturday night at Marquette Stadium.

Jorge Brambila’s first-half goal pulled Yakima even at 1-1 and Esteban Ponteciano’s tally in the second half made it 2-2.

But the Crossfire, which lost to Yakima 1-0 on May 30, scored in the final 15 minutes to earn the season-ending win.

“After last week (a 4-0 loss) it was good to see the guys put up a fight,” said Alex Silva. “They enjoyed making a good effort and played hard. It would’ve been nice to get the win, but we played hard.”

The Reds finished the season 4-12.

YAKIMA, Wash. — Saturday was a day to forget for the Yakima Reds.

Hoping for a late-season surge with a string on matches on their home field, the Reds dropped a 4-0 decision to the Abbotsford Mariners at Marquette Stadium.

Yakima coach Alex Silva had a difficult time understanding the lopsided score in his team’s second-to-last PDL Northwest match.

“It was just a nightmare game,” he said. “We made mistakes we don’t usually make and we just looked like a tired team out there. It was very disappointing.”

Yakima, which had lost to Abbotsford 1-0 during a Canadian roadtrip last month, slipped to 4-11-0. Abbotsford is 3-11-1.

The Reds close their season next Saturday at home against the Washington Crossfire, a team Yakima beat 1-0 in May.

While Thursday certainly was an eventful night for the Yakima Reds, it was not a victorious one, as they fell 1-0 to the Vancouver Whitecaps Residency.

The first oddity came in the third minute when the sprinkler system came on, spraying players and leaving a large puddle in the middle of the field.

Following the surprise shower, Vancouver’s Doudou Toure scored the lone goal of the match on a give-and-go from teammate Charlie Trafford.

“Our energy just wasn’t there,” Reds coach Alex Silva said. “Give them credit,” he said of Vancouver, which Yakima beat 1-0 on June 3 in British Columbia. “They had a lot of energy and they worked harder.”

In the 37th minute, Toure was fouled in the penalty area, and was called upon to take the ensuing penalty shot.

Toure went left with the shot, as did Yakima goalie Claudio Lazar, who blocked it and then smothered the ball to end the threat.

“Claudio is one of the best,” Silva said. “He’s a fighter.”

Soon after Lazar’s heroics, Yakima would play with a one-man advantage for the rest of the game when Trafford, a defender, was given a straight red card for a clumsy challenge on Yakima’s Esteban Potenciano.

In the second half, Yakima controlled possession, but could only muster two shots on goal.

One of those came in the 75th minute, when Vancouver goalie Daniel Pelc slapped aside Vini Oliveira’s strike, allowing his defenders to clear the ball.

Yakima’s last two scoring opportunities came on corner kicks in the last five minutes of the game. In desperation, the Reds sent all 11 players — including Lazar — forward, the soccer equivalent of hockey’s empty net.

Lazar outjumped the players more accustomed to taking shots, heading the ball toward the goal on both occasions, only to be thwarted both times.

Vancouver improves its record to 2-8-3. Yakima falls 4-10.

Yakima was playing without forward Abdulwali Aman, who suffered a broken tibia in the Reds’ July 8 win against Spokane. Silva said Aman will be out the remainder of the calendar year.

“That’s a big loss,” Silva said of Aman’s injury. “Now we’re just playing to finish strong.”

The Reds have two more home games to finish their season. On Saturday they’ll face the Abbotsford Mariners and on July 24, they’ll close the season against the Washington Crossfire. Both games are at Marquette Stadium and start at 7 p.m.

First half: 1, Vancouver, Doudou Toure (Charlie Trafford), 43:00.

Second half: No scoring.

Saves: Claudio Lazar (Y) 8, Daniel Pelc (V) 3.

Fouls: Yakima 5, Vancouver 5. Offsides: Yakima 3, Vancouver 4. Corner kicks: Yakima 3, Vancouver 1. Yellow cards: Yakima 2 (Kevin Eggen, Alvaro Valencia), Vancouver 0. Red cards: Yakima 0, Vancouver 1 (Trafford).

Taking a 1-0 lead into the break, the Reds broke the game open in the second half with goals by Warlen Silva and Vini Oliveira. Yakima beat the Spiders 6-2 at Marquette Stadium last week.

“We came to get the win and the three points and we got that done,” said Yakima coach Alex Silva, whose team improved to 4-8 with 12 points. “We attacked on offense and played disciplined defense.”

It wasn’t all good news for the Reds. Forward Abdulwali Aman scored Yakima’s first-half goal but suffered a leg injury on the play. Silva said he was taken to a hospital for further evaluation and his status for Saturday’s match at Kitsap is uncertain.
