George to lead Racing Commission

January 15, 2009 by

Paul George, who has been involved in horse racing for a quarter century, has been elected chairman of the Washington Horse Racing Commission.

The former Yakima mayor was elected to the post during the commission’s January meeting in Auburn. He was appointed to the racing commission in 2006.

George’s past experience in the industry has covered a wide range of duties, including track management, and marketing and communications for a wagering systems company. That experience includes two stints at now-shuttered Yakima Meadows, one as track manager, and the other as marketing director.

George is also a former sports editor for the Yakima Herald-Republic, and former member of the Yakima City Council.

George succeeds Carol Smith-Merkulov from Olympia.
