Donation frees up Cowiche Canyon land
January 31, 2011 by YH-R Outdoors
YAKIMA, Wash. — Hikers at Snow Mountain Ranch have had every reason to reach the crest of Cowiche Mountain and presume they were still standing on part of the property purchased in 2005 by the Cowiche Canyon Conservancy.
But they were actually on private property.
“The boundary line of Snow Mountain Ranch, as you’re heading south — which is up the hill — ends before you get to the ridgeline,” said Conservancy executive director Betsy Bloomfield.
The area above that property line, including the ridgetop itself, was actually owned by a ranching family, part of cattle-grazing pastures that are primarily on the south side of the ridge. The ranch’s fenceline enclosing the cattle was below the property line, making the Conservancy’s Snow Mountain Ranch area seem larger than it really was.
Now, thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, the Snow Mountain property will be as big as it seemed.
The donation gave Cowiche Canyon Conservancy enough to purchase the top of the ridgeline and expects to close the deal “within the next two weeks,” Bloomfield said.
Bloomfield didn’t reveal the price of the purchased property, which she described as a narrow, 63-acre piece roughly a mile long and “a couple hundred yards” wide.
While lauding the ranching family that owned the mountaintop as “wonderful neighbors” who had never made an issue of Snow Mountain Ranch hikers’ de facto trespassing on their property, Bloomfield stressed the importance of Conservancy ownership at the summit.
“That ridgeline is along the spine of the William O. Douglas Trail, the part that will take us all the way from Yakima to Mount Rainier,” Bloomfield said.
“So it was really a critical piece for us. You’ve got a very high vista, and it’s just an important point for us to be able to capture the ranching legacy of this area … to share this value of this open-rangelands heritage.”
Roughly three-fourths of Snow Mountain Ranch’s 1,800 acres, as well as much of the adjacent ranchland, burned during last July’s human-caused Cowiche Mill Road fire.
WDFW grazing permit questioned
January 31, 2011 by Scott Sandsberry
COWICHE, Wash. — A cattle-grazing permit on the Cowiche unit of the Oak Creek Wildlife Area has raised the hackles of a legislative watchdog who has been critical of similar grazing on state wildlife land in eastern Kittitas County.
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife has issued a grazing permit to West Valley landowners and cattle ranchers Stan and Linda Emerick allowing for 168 adult-unit months (AUMs) — the equivalent of 168 cows and 168 calves grazing for one month — to use this spring on the WDFW’s Cowiche unit between April and June.
Rob Kavanaugh, an Olympia resident who helped author the state’s rangeland management statutes, said he doubts the state has done its due diligence in approving the grazing.
“I’m going to ask for a copy of the (state wildlife) commission’s approval and a copy of the (Environmental Impact Statement),” Kavanaugh said. “And if they didn’t follow that, we’ll go right back into court.”
Oak Creek Wildlife Area manager Ross Huffman, though, said the property to be grazed “came with an existing grazing lease from the previous owner” when the WDFW bought the property.
In addition, much of the neighboring Department of Natural Resource land on which the Emericks has had ongoing grazing leases burned during last summer’s Cowiche Mill Road Fire.

Boys basketball Grandview boys clinch CWAC
January 30, 2011 by Scott Spruill
GRANDVIEW, Wash. — There are times when it seems all the Grandview’s boys basketball team wants to do is park behind the arc and cast shots from the cafeteria door.
And that’s the diabolical trap opponents fall in.
These Greyhounds stretch you, then shred you.
|
With a gym-shaking run of five straight 3-pointers in the second quarter, unbeaten Grandview imposed its versatile will on Wapato and ran off with an 86-61 home victory in a clash of the CWAC’s state-ranked elite Saturday night.
The victory not only pumped Grandview’s spotless records to 16-0 in the conference and 18-0 for the season, but combined with Ellensburg’s loss at Quincy it clinched the CWAC title for the Greyhounds with two games to play.
Grandview’s perimeter-fueled run in the second period — a 19-6 burst in which the Hounds scored on eight of nine possessions — allowed Coach Ray Garcia’s crew to take a different approach in the second half. The Greyhounds spread the floor, made extra passes, worked the clock, penetrated Wapato’s defense — which was weary of the long-ball threat — and sealed the win with a 13-0 blitz in the final period.
“We were waiting for a run like that,” said Daniel Nielsen, who buried six 3-pointers and scored a game-high 26 points. “When the 3-pointers fall like that, we try to make sure we still do other things and not be predictable. Things just fell into place tonight.”
After Nielsen hit the fifth trey in the decisive run, Adrian Reyes lobbed a backdoor pass to Tony Vela for a layin and Grandview spent most of the rest of the night looking for lanes and attacking the middle.
“Our shooters got us going — that was some streak and they can definitely turn it on like that,” said Vela, who turned in another stellar night at the point with nine assists. “They came off screens and from the range. But we changed up in the second half and were more patient.
“We did evrything pretty well tonight,” he added. “The team knows it’s time to start peaking.”
Offensively, Vela’s team was in full stride. Grandview shot 57.4 percent from the field and put up 86 points against a defense that rarely lets anyone above the 60s.
But after letting Wapato zip out to an early 11-4 lead, Grandview’s defense was spot on. Jacoby Howe, the CWAC’s leading scorer, got his numbers with 23 points on 10 of 18 shooting. But Efrain Reynoso, the conference’s No. 4 scorer, was held to five points and the Wolves lost possessions with 16 turnovers.
Even with that, the seventh-ranked Wolves (12-4, 14-4) were within 61-52 early in the fourth quarter. But when Grandview’s second wind kicked in, it was a door-slammer.
Nielsen started the 13-0 run by showing he’s not all 3-point bomber. He scored a weakside putback basket and followed a minute later with a strong baseline move to the rim.
“The game felt much closer than the score,” Nielsen said. “When we play Wapato it’s always back and forth. We knew we had to keep going and keep the intensity up.”
Vela echoed that thought. “Playing Wapato is always intense,” he said. “We both play hard on every possession and it was like that tonight. I looked up and saw a 20-point lead and thought, ‘Where did that come from?’”
Six players scoring in double figures and a team in full speed. That’s where.

Boys basketball: Pirates move into 1st
January 30, 2011 by YH-R Sports
PASCO, Wash. — As coaches tend to do, Davis head man Eli Juarez downplayed a bit Saturday’s 57-49 victory at Chiawana.
“This is just a game, it’s just one game,” he said, recounting the postgame discussion in the victorious visitors locker room.
Yep, just one game — and one huge victory.
The Pirates avenged their lone league loss and reclaimed first place atop the CBBN 4A standings with three games left to play.
Three weeks after watching the Riverhawks torch the Davis Gym nets en route to an 80-74 victory, Davis went on the defense.
Pirates guard Jackson Marquis led the way in holding the league’s top scorer, Justin Smith, to nine points, about half his average and 19 fewer than he scored in the Jan. 9 matchup.
Not to be outdone, Davis’ Cooper Kupp limited Jordan Downing — who had 15 in the first meeting — to five, nearly eight below his average.
“We closed out on the shooters a lot better,” said Juarez, noting the Riverhawks’ 5-for-24 shooting from 3-point range.
The Pirates also hit the glass, outrebounding Chiawana 43-39 despite the absence of big-leaper Devonte’ Luckett, who is sidelined for academic reasons.
David Trimble led Davis (8-1 CBBN 4A, 15-2 overall) with his usual all-around performance — 19 points, 14 rebounds, five assists and three steals — and Markus McClurkin added 11 points.
Miquiyah Zamora led Chiawana (8-2, 13-5) with 14.
Davis hosts third-place Richland on Friday.

CWU men seize control of GNAC
January 30, 2011 by YH-R Sports
ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Greg Sparling is rarely at a loss for words, and the Central Washington coach certainly wasn’t Saturday night, either.
But the word he said most was, “Wow.”
Which seemed fitting, given the magnitude of the 14th-ranked Wildcats’ 52-50 triumph over Alaska Anchorage at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.
The victory put Central 1 1/2 games ahead of the Seawolves in the GNAC standings and also tied a conference record with its ninth consecutive road victory.
It also reversed a heart-breaking 98-93 loss to Anchorage in a double-overtime game in Ellensburg on Dec. 30.
“Wow — incredible,” Sparling said via telephone after the game. “I’ll tell you what, my hat’s off to our guys. The weren’t going to let this one get away.”
Asked if it was Central’s biggest win in recent history, he said, “Without a doubt. Not too many people come up here and win.”
Drew Harris and Chris Sprinker led the Wildcats with 11 points each while Jamar Berry had 10. Anchorage’s 6-foot-9 Taylor Rohde topped all scorers with 15 points and also had a game-high 10 rebounds.
CWU led 49-44 with 5:23 to play, but the Seawolves took a 50-49 lead on Mario Gill’s 3-pointer at 3:43.
Neither team scored again until Sprinker, fouled on a rebound with 1:10 to play, made two free throws for a 51-50 Wildcat edge.
Central’s Roby Clyde rebounded an Anchorage miss, was fouled and made one of two foul shots with nine seconds left. A long 3-pointer by the Seawolves Brandon Walker missed as time expired.
“Every time they made a run, we answered and every time we made a run, they answered,” Sparling said. “It was two heavyweights slugging it out in the middle of the ring — huge win.”
The Wildcats have a bye on Thursday night before hosting Northwest Nazarene on Saturday night. They will close their regular season with five of their final seven games at home while Anchorage plays five if its last eight on the road.
