Colleges: Smith lifts Central to win

ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Erin Smith, a sophomore from Selah, had 13 kills and six blocks to help Central Washington defeat Alaska Fairbanks 21-25, 25-13, 25-19, 25-19 in GNAC volleyball action Saturday night in Nicholson Pavilion.
Jordan Offutt led the Wildcats (4-5 conference, 10-7 overall) with 17 kills and three aces while Carlee Marble totaled 45 assists and eight digs.
The match concluded the first half of the conference season for Central, which visits Montana State Billings on Thursday.

No. 2 Spokane overcomes Yaks
Yakima Valley gave the NWAACC’s second-ranked team a stern tussle Saturday on the Yaks field, but ultimately dropped a 2-1 East Region decision to Spokane.
Katy Allen gave YVCC a 1-0 halftime lead with a goal assisted by Morgan McDonald in the 34th minute.
The Sasquatch (7-0-0 region, 10-1-0 overall), however, tied it in the 56th minute and got the game-winner five minutes later.
Amanda Freisz recorded five saves for the Yaks (5-2-0, 7-3-1), who visit Walla Walla on Wednesday.

CWU men 8th at Western Invite
BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Nathan Minor finished 25th overall as shorthanded Central Washington placed eighth at the 38th annual Western Classic Invitational on Saturday at East Lake Padden Park.
The Wildcat women, with sophomore Connie Morgan placing 55th, finished ninth.
CWU was without seniors Manuel Santos of Davis and Scott Power of Burlington due to injury. Central’s women were also missing some of their top runners.
The Wildcats will compete in the PLU Invitational next Saturday before hosting the GNAC championships at Apple Ridge Run on Naches Heights on Oct. 22.
