Local report: Yaks split on first day of NWAACCs

GRESHAM, Ore. — Yakima Valley split its first two matches in the NWAACC volleyball tournament Thursday, thereby staying in contention for the championship.
The Yaks, third in last year’s tournament and ranked seventh in this season’s most recent coaches poll, bounced back from a 3-1 first-round loss to sixth-ranked Shoreline to beat Clark in a best-of-three loser’s bracket contest, 2-1.
YVCC, 24-11, continues loser’s bracket play at 12:30 p.m. today against the winner of an earlier match between fourth-ranked Blue Mountain and Umpqua.
In a 25-21, 23-25, 27-25, 25-11 loss to Shoreline, Tori Farias put down 12 kills and had five digs. Taylor Flores and Kylie Huffman combined for 45 assists and Danielle Najera amassed 27 digs.
The Yaks then downed Clark 25-17, 25-19 with Farias accounting for 12 kills and 12 digs and Huffman and Flores dealing 29 assists.
The tournament, which is being played at Mt. Hood Community College, runs through Sunday.
