Local report: YVCC falls in first round

AUBURN, Wash. — Green River scored once in the fourth minute and again in the 27th, and went on to end Yakima Valley’s women’s soccer season with a 2-0 victory in a first-round NWAACC playoff match Wednesday.
YVCC, ranked sixth in the most recent NWAACC coaches poll, finished its season 12-6-1. Unranked Green River advanced with a 12-4-4 record.
Alex Mueller got the Gators’ first goal with an assist from Julie Heltne. Lynze Utz followed with an assist from Rayssa Lira.
“They were really fast and really tall,” said Yaks assistant coach Tammy Vela. “And we were not used to that turf.”

Second half: No scoring.

Reno among 5 CWU honorees
ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Mike Reno, a Central Washington senior from Kittitas, has been named to the GNAC all-academic football team.
Defensive tackle Reno was joined by four CWU teammates on the squad, which was announced Wednesday.
Reno has compiled a 3.24 grade point average in physical education and made the all-academic team for the first time. Other Wildcats on the squad were junior center Joey Tivnan (3.58 in math education), sophomore linebacker Stan Langlow (3.38 in business administration), junior quarterback Ryan Robertson (3.32 in business administration) and sophomore linebacker Stetson Shearer (3.22 in math and physics).

Smith on all-academic team
ELLENSBURG, Wash. — Selah sophomore Erin Smith was among five Central Washington volleyball players named to the GNAC all-academic team Wednesday.
Smith, a middle blocker, has compiled a 3.57 grade point average. She has not declared a major.
Other Wildcats on the team were senior setter Carlee Marble (4.00 in the graduate athletic administration program), junior setter Devin Larson (3.59 in physical education and school health), senior outside hitter Meg Ryan (3.47 in business) and sophomore defensive specialist Chelsie Vea (3.37, major undeclared).
