Local report: YVCC volleyball sweeps at home

YAKIMA, Wash. — Tori Farias had 14 kills and 13 digs as Yakima Valley concluded its home volleyball season Friday night with a 3-0 sweep of Wenatchee Valley in East Region play.

The Yaks won 25-18, 25-19, 25-22 in Sherar Gym.

YVCC, ranked seventh in the most recent NWAACC poll released Thursday, improved to 8-5 in region play and 21-9 overall.

Yakima Valley concludes its regular season next Friday at Treasure Valley and will open NWAACC Tournament play Nov. 16 at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham, Ore.

Central falls in exhibition

PORTLAND, Ore. — Sophie Russell scored 17 points to lead Central Washington in the Wildcats’ women’s basketball exhibition with Portland State on Friday night in an 85-69 loss to the NCAA Division I Vikings.

Alex Dunn had 10 points and 13 assists for CWU in its first competition under coach Shawn Nelson. The new Central mentor will make his official debut on Nov. 18 against Harding University of Arkansas in Seattle.

Central was within 30-28 at halftime and made 10 of 19 3-pointers. Jessica VanDyke was the Wildcats’ most effective long-range shooter, hitting 4 of 6 from beyond the arc.
